Light of the world
soundSpace

light of the world double-CD I was expecting some sort of upbeat music that would rouse me to worship like my other non-denominational CDs, but this one was a complete surprise.

There were songs in French, Spanish, Chinese, African dialects. There were Spanish guitars, Japanese koto, African drums. The CD shows you how diverse the faith is.

Conservative progressions and beats mark this collection of mostly ballads. Though still singing in worship to our Lord, the whole collection sounds a lot like the progression of Mass: Mid-tempo, tones and rhythms falling at precised prescribed moments, almost without surprise.

Yet there's something to be said about making music a communication tool, that the more important thing is to make the music as simple as possible so that all people regardless of background can sing along.

Most memorable is the song "Daughter of God," an exultation of lesser-known women of the Bible, and Pope John Paul II's own exhortation to "Go, and tell the world about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ," recorded earlier in his papacy.

If you're looking for worship to rouse you from the dregs of everyday, try SonicFlood or Jars of Clay.

If you're looking for ballads to remind you of a rock-steady, unchanging, reliable faith, this is the CD for you.
