Some patterned ones are good backgrounds for pictures: http://www.scenic-route.com = A lot of natural-looking "tiled" or "seamless" backgrounds. Lots of links to others like it.
http://harmstile.www.50megs.com/index.htm = This is where Scenic-route gets his ideas from. These backgounds are less natural and rather gaudy, but we think it's a good substitute to Scenic-route from time to time.
Plain backgrounds: These two sites are good for plain pastel or natural colors. They're good for text pages, because if you have a lot of words on your page you want people to read the words and not just look at the page:
Some of the big lettering is created using html font tags and making the size big -- usually 4-7. Others are created using these banner-making tools:
http://www.gifworks.com = This is the simplest banner-making tool we know of online. It has fonts, colors, animation tricks, touch-ups, a crop tool, and other editing tricks.
http://www.bannertips.com/sizes.shtml = Not very familiar with this, but it gave us a good banner distinctly different from the one produced by Gifworks. It might also have tricks like Gifworks.
COLORS
This is also useful to know so you know what color to use with your background. Instead of white, you can use a very faint yellow, green, purple or blue tinge. For that, you need a 6-digit letter code. These give you the color codes automatically:
