Beverly Hillbillies Family Values Course

Return to my homepage

Come 'n listen to my story 'bout a man named Jed A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed, And then one day, he was shootin' at some food, And up through the ground come a bubblin' crude, Oil, that is, black gold, Texas Tea

Well, the first thing you know, old Jed's a millionaire, Kin folk said, Jed, move away from there. Said Californy is the place you oughta be, so they loaded up the truck and they moved to Beverly, Hills, that is, swimming pools, movie stars

Well, now it's time to say goodbye to Jed and all his kin. They would like to thank you folks for kindly droppin' in. You're all invited back again to this locality,to have a heapin' helpin' of their hospitality.Hillbilly, that is, set a spell, take your shoes off!Y'all come back now, hear?

The Ballad of Jed Clampett begins the process of our looking at family values. Read it thoroughly and try to understand the fact that though they were simple folk, they'd give you their last dime, their last possum meal, and their only room. Family meant everything to this Tennessee family who moved to Beverly Hills but did not leave their values behind.

This is a video course that allows students and parents to study their own family values. PCHS' theme for this year centers on the family and its values. We've tied the theme into the Beverly Hillbillies, because no matter how ridiculous the situations may seem in the videos you'll watch, you'll always find a lesson to be learned and values to be shared.

REQUIREMENTS

Email me or come into the classroom and enroll in the course. There is no cost for this course during the school year. I'm offering it free of charge as a part of my involvement in the PCHS program Every Teacher is a Religion Teacher. During the summer the normal summer tuition of $125.00 returns. This class can be taken at school if you have an opening in your schedule or be done at home. It is a semester course.

You should do an episode a week. The videos will be housed in my classroom and may be checked out on a daily basis.

You can access the worksheets for each episode by clicking on the links below. Each worksheet is worth 100 points. They must be handed in to me. YOU CAN ALSO EMAIL THEM TO ME. JUST COPY AND PASTE THE QUESTIONS INTO YOUR EMAIL AND THEN ANSWER THEM AND SEND THEM TO smithay@citynet.net

You work at your own pace.

Working together we will come up with one major project for a semester exam grade that can be used as a part of the school theme of family values.

For a summer course you may ignore the midterm projects and do two of these:

1. Do a family tree as far back as you can. Include both sides of the tree(mother & father). A family tree shows the importance of all the members of the family.

2. In a two page paper discuss the most important aspect of your family. Tell why your family is important to you, how they support and help you. Discuss how they celebrate family events and tell whether you enjoy these events or not.

3. Story telling is a big part of family. Using your parents or grandparents as your resources, chronicle two to three family stories you think are funny, serious, historical, etc. and tell me them in writing.

4. Living in the 21st century, one of the major complaints of the older generation is that the family is slowly or now rapidly breaking up. In a two to three page essay discuss what you see are the factors for the breakup of the family unit. Why are these factors causing this societal breakup and how do you think we should correct the problem.

Do these projects only during the school year!Mid Term Exam/Project
