1. What moral principle is expressed in Jed's statment, "Don't want to be grazing in another man's pasture?" How would our society be improved by applying this thought? Why?
2. The Widow Fenwick makes the statement, "I'll do anything for enough money." In your religion classes many of you have discussed the idea of abandoning your morals or selling yourself for "enough money." Are there things in your life that are not for sale? Make a list of those "not for sale items." Tell why you placed these specific items on your list. How do we "sell" ourselves for other things besides money?
3. Jed seeks a wife to turn Elly May into a "lady." First give your definition of what a "lady" is. How does that differ from the 1960's version when this episode was aired, and how does it differ from Jed's version of what a "lady" is? Do you know a woman who would be considered a "lady?" Who is she and what qualities make her a "lady?"
4. Elly May was a woman before her time. She was athletic and self-assured. Discuss how female athletes have changed our culture since the time of the Beverly Hillbillies. Discuss a female athlete who is a role model for you.
5. Jed is a single parent. What problems does he face raising a daughter and a nephew in a new place as a single parent? How does his family help him? Do you know a single parent? If so, arrange to talk to him/her and find out what the joys, problems, frustrations, and rewards are for being a single parent are and discuss them here.
6. Granny seems to think there is a difference between Mountain women and City women. Comment on her thoughts. Ask your parents if their moms and dads had any thoughts on who was the "right" person for them to marry. Should you marry/date a person because your parents want you too or because you want to and why?
7. Granny doesn't think much about women who put on a lot of beauty grease and fancy smells. How has our society's approach to these types of items changed over the years? Give examples of how we're influenced to "improve" our looks via creams, perfumes, colognes, deodorants, etc.
