Worksheet for Episode 3 of the Beverly Hillbillies

Return to The Beverly Hillbillies Family Values Course Main Page

Your Name___________________________

1. One of the themes of the show is the use of instant wealth. If you were to win the lottery for $25 Million dollars, what would you do with the money? Be honest; would you help others, contribute to charities, spend a lot of it on yourself and your family? Be specific and tell why.

2. This episode is based on a letter written by Aunt Pearl. Reflect on the last letter(not email) you received from a friend or relative. How did it make you feel? Did you write a letter back(not email)? Ask your parents if they have any old family letters and with their permission, summarize what the letter was about.

3. During the reading of the letter from Jethro's mom to the family, several phrases concerning sexual ideas are brought up. How do Jed and Granny handle these situations when Elly May asks what they mean? Explain how Jed "passes the buck" to Granny? Do you believe that a father should be able to explain sex to daughters, and should mothers be able to explain it to sons? Do you feel they did a good job of explaining sex to her and why? Without going into any details, how did you learn about sex? Did your parents have as much trouble with the topic as Elly May's? How could we improve in this area of education?

4. We learn that Jethro's mom is a widow. Both Jed and Granny believe that widows have a right to "look" and even court. How do you feel about the topic? Would you support a parent who was widowed dating and even remarrying, knowing that the new spouse would be replacing one of your parents who had died?

5. Jethro took 2 years to finish the first grade and 3 years to finish the fourth grade. Obviously he was held back. Until recently, students have not been held back and often graduated without the ability to read and comprehend. States, boards of education, and the Federal Government are considering retaining students until they master a specific skill level. Develop your thoughts on this topic. Also where should parents fall into this topic?

6. Granny has some abilities to sew but refers to Cousin Peal as being the expert in their family. Is there someone in your family who is an exceptional seamstress or tailor? Is there someone in your family who is exceptional in another craft? Ask them to show you how to do their craft and you try to create a small project for this class. Hand it in with this worksheet. Tell me your favorite handmade craft/object that is in your home and tell why it's your favorite.

7. Granny complains about Jethro having to wear a uniform to school. She doesn't believe a uniform will make a bit of difference in the education of a person. You go to a school where there is no uniform, but there is a tough dress code. First explain your feelings on uniforms in private and public schools. Then ask your parents if they had to wear uniforms and how they felt about it and share it with me.
