Return to The Beverly Hillbillies Family Values Course Main Page

Your Name__________________________________

1. This episode contains several excellent quotes about competition. Comment on your feelings and experiences with the following: A. "Defeat with honor is betten than victory with a tarnished ideal." B. "It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game." C. "Lose with honor."

2. Do Mr. Drysdale and Mr. Harker take the skeet shooting competition too seriously? Why? Do we as a society take competition too seriously and why?

3. Mr. Drysdale stretches the truth when he says that Jed had never shot a skeet before. Is that acceptable under our moral teachings? Explain.

4. How does Mr. Drysdale's manipulation of the truth come back to haunt him? Why? Discuss whether you have ever been in a situation where your untruthfulness has come back to haunt you.

5. One of the more humorous scenes in this episode is when the Clampetts show Mr. Drysdale (who has a $1200.00 skeet gun) that they can shoot 100% better than he can and they're using rifles, shotguns, and a slingshot. Mr. Drysdale thinks that the more expensive the object the better it is and the better he will be. How do advertisements make young people think that they need the most expensive equipment to excel in business or on the playing field or to have better relationships? How do we fight this sort of mentality?

6. Hunting was very important to Jed and Jethro. Is hunting an important part of our culture and why? Interview someone you know who is a hunter and discuss his/her reasons for enjoying this recreation. Discuss too, whether the hunter and you feel that the hunted should have a sporting chance, like Jed keeps mentioning in this episode. In essence do you need an AK47 to kill deer?

7. In your opinion, what would Jed have to say about gun control laws? Why? How might he feel about the killings at Columbine, Atlanta, and the shootings in Los Angeles at the Jewish Community Center? Why?
