1. In the mountain culture, the sharing of food was always a sign of hospitality. Many hosts were known for their favorite dishes. List the dishes Granny has cooked up that seem to be repeated through many episodes. Now ask your parents what are some of the favorite dishes, traditional family meals, ethnic from your family's background, that your family enjoys. Who cooks them? Do some research and find one cultural dish from our area that is popular. Write down the recipe and attach it to this sheet. If time permits, we'll have a cultural food festival to celebrate the diversity of West Virginia/Ohio culture.
2. It is obvious by this episode that Jed and Granny can not read. Using the internet or any WV agency tell briefly to what extent this problem still exists in our state and Wood County. What programs are in existence to help combat this problem?
3. Comment on Granny's quote, "I don't need any beauty cream." Is she being conceited, heartfelt honest? In your opinion do women or men need all of these products on the market to make them "beautiful?" Why?
4. Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs wrote and in later episodes sing "The Ballad of Jed Clampett." Using the internet check these two very famous Blue Grass singers and tell me briefly about them.
5. I have several Blue Grass CD's in my room (101). Check one out per day and listen to it. Reflect on the morals and values that are used in any song on the CD you have chosen. Tell which CD you chose, the song title, and who the artist was sang or played the song along with your analysis of it.
6. Define "wingding"(not a type of font)and a "barn dance." Why were these important to mountain folk?
7. Jed, Granny and Pearl discuss Pearl's first loves, Lester and Earl. The general idea or theme here is that first loves are very special. Discuss your first love (don't name names please), tell why he/she was your first love and why that person was so special to you.
8. You can get the idea that the Clampetts, Bodines, and their Blue Grass guests love to tell stories and reminisce about "old times." We've all been to the family reunion or the family Christmas gathering where the "old timers" start spinning their yarns about life in the old days. This is a part of family that is very important because it defines who you are, it is in essence your family history. Tell me one of your family stories you have heard before and tell why it's important to you.
