1. Tell what the purpose of a root cellar is and discuss other ways to preserve food that do not involve preservatives. Do your parents or grandparents still do any of these activities to store or preserve food?












2. What is the purpose of the modern beauty contest? What is your reaction to the following quotes from this episode: "Intellect is more important than 'cheese cake'" and "intellectual measurements are more important than physical measurements." (Ask your parents what cheese cake means if you're thinking food!)














3. What emphasis does our culture place on physical beauty as opposed to inner or other forms of beauty? Why? Do the Clampetts place a lot of importance in physical appearance why or why not? How are we bombarded by society's idea of beauty continuously, give plenty of examples.













4. Have you ever gained or lost an advantage because of your physical appearance? What was it and why?







5. In 8th grade literature we read a play called "The Ugly Duckling," and we discussed the idea of beauty being in the eye of the beholder. I think the U.S.S. Enterprise is beautiful but you don't. You might think the Millenium Falcon is beautiful and I don't. It is a matter of personal taste and judgement. In this episode several of the characters have an idea of what is beautiful discuss each of the following: A. What, if it were ever completed, would be beautiful to Granny as a means of escapting Elly May's critters? Why? B. What does Jed not find beautiful anymore especially as it starts to seep into his yard. Why? C. What does Elly May consider beautiful which gets her into a lot of trouble with Granny? Why?











6. Why is the idea of Granny entering the beauty contest considered ridiculous? Should a person's age be held against him/her in entering contests, in the work place or in life in general? Why? Should people act their age, or should they be young in spirit? Why?












7. Jed states that he doesn't want any more money. "We have more than our share now." Do you believe there should be limits on how much money one person or country should have? Should people and countries share their resources with others? Why? Give an example of a millionair/billionair who has spread his/her wealth around. Why do you think he/she did so?
