Kalamitsa Beach is situated on the west coast of the island of Skyros, just south of the port of Linaria, and for that reason it can sometimes get a bit busier. It is a long sand and pebble beach that is regularly in the path of the wind and therefore it is popular with windsurfers. The seawater at Kalamitsa beach is very clear. The distance from the beach to the capital Skyros Chora is about ten kilometers. It is an organised beach and there are a number of taverns and cafes, and a surf club (not open yet in May 2018 when we were there, and at that time there were also no sunbeds and umbrellas for rent). Kalamitsa is widely considered the best beach of Skyros (maybe for surfing, but we have seen better beaches such as Magazia, Acherounes, Gyrismata, Kareflou, Limanaki). At the beach of Kalamitsa is the chapel of Agios Mamas, and near are a sarcophagus and a well-preserved column from the Doric time.
If you take the road south from Kalamitsa into the direction of the grave of Rupert Brooke (which we could not find) and the bay of Tris Boukes, then gradually the nature becames more rugged and you will encounter beautiful landscapes, especially if you keep driving and go into the mountains. Eventually you'll end up at a military base anyway and you will not be able to continue. The bay of Tris Boukies is not accessible and also at Schinochorti on the east side of the island is a military base.
