Here is some of the pike trace set-ups
that we use, well illustrated pictures, just like to thank Gary for the time that he has spent creating these
pictures a job well done cheers bud :).

Buying
wire traces can work out to be expensive for this I make my own which does
work out a lot
cheaper. You will need wire of at least 25lb, treble hooks of about size 6
to 8, swivels and crimps. The hooks I use are EAGLE CLAW BRONZE TREBLES
374 Size 6 £8.50 postage is in with the price 2002 prices these
trebles are barbed so a pair of pliers to squash 2 of the barbs and the
third barb is used to insert into the dead bait,
you can purchase these from here with a catalogue at this addy

Very good for beginners,
this basic set-up is the simplest and cheapest deadbait method used for
catching pike, its best used in shallow clear waters where any resistance
felt by a nervous pike could result in a lost run. Tip
I tend to make traces slightly longer than 18 inches and use the extra
length for a half hitch to tie around end of tail to hold bait on. |
|
With the ledger set-up comes
plenty of options including longer casting, the big plus for this set-up
is the sliding stop knot with 2 beads to protect each knot. Set the stop
knot and resistance is only felt when the weight hits it. Another option
in weeded areas is to pop the deadbait up above the weed using the stop
knot to adjust the depth. |
|
This set-up is designed for
short casting but often a falling tree makes a good ambush spot!! fixed
paternoster will get you right in the pikes hunting range. Because we use
4 ft of 6lb mono between 1-2oz weight and a 3 way swivel means if the
weight snags the mono being the weak link will break ensuring the trace
and more important the hooked pike are not left tangled to the
obstruction. The 3 way swivel means the live bait can swim 360* with the
longer uptrace as protection from the treble hooks and with the float and
depth set you can feel confident any situation can be dealt with |
|
Many different types of
float can be used with this method, set the depth then the bait (live or
dead) up the trace a short cast and watch the float go with the flow
covering lots of water with little effort but be ready to strike quick
with this method as resistance is felt as soon as the pike takes. Most
important never leave the float unattended and always keep your eye's on
the float then there will be less chance of deep hooking. |
|
If you want to get to some
of them drop off spots that are out of range and with wind blowing from
behind give the drift float a blast you never know covering them illusive
ambush spots may produce a specimen pike. |
