My tackle set up consists of 2x12 ft Dawia Pike Pro X fishing
rods with 2 lb test curve, 2 Shimano 6010 aero gt baitrunner reels with
12lb Maxima line, with double Rod Rest, with 2 electronic bite alarms at the
front and 2 Drop Back bite indicators at the rear which help if you get
runs coming towards you.
Tackle Set-Up.
Electronic Bite Alarm.
|
Most anglers
will be equipped with electronic alarms in one kind or another, usually in
combination with bobbins or butt indicators, in order to give both visual
and audible bite warning. The line is placed in the slot in the alarm head
and a bite is then indicated with a bleep and flashing led display when
the line moves. And with being able to hear the alarms of a pike running
with the deadbait will also reduce the chance of deep hooking. |
Hooks, Wire etc.
Buying
wire traces can work out to be expensive for this I make my own which does
work out alot cheaper. You will need wire of at least 25lb, treble hooks
of about size 6 to 8, swivels and crimps. The hooks I use are EAGLE CLAW
BRONZE TREBLES 374 Size 6 £8.50 postage is in with the price 2002
prices these trebles are barbed so a pair of pliers to squash 2 of the
barbs and the third barb is used to insert into the dead bait you can
purchase these from here with a catalogue at this addy Harris

Forceps.
|
These are an
essential for pike fishing as you don't want to be placing your hands
inside the mouth because of there sharp teeth. They are excellent
for locking onto the shank of a treble (I use barbless trebles myself as
they cause less damage while removing) either going in through the mouth
or if going in through gills but take extreme care as the gill rakes can
be damaged very easily. |
Weighing Scales.
Ideal if you
want to keep a record of the weight of fish you are catching. It's very
important not to use the hook on the weighing scales to lift the pike by
it's gills use a weigh sling. I keep a log of the fish i catch by weight,
length and girth and any distinguishing marks as I'm very interested in
the conservation of pike and it's habitat. |
|
Floats.
|
Floats are
also a good bite indicator but must have your eye's on them all the time,
and they can be fished with many types of rig set-ups. I like to use
floats it's great to see them move along the surface of the loch on a calm
day. |
Flavored Oils.
I use flavored
oils which help allot for releasing scent trails far and wide over the
loch. You get a bag put some oil inside and roll the fish around in the
oil and freeze it then. When you go to bait up you put a few cuts with a
sharp knife down each side of the bait and rub some more oil
on and then cast. On calm day you can see the oil appear on the surface as
the pike grabs in it's mouth. You can also use a syringe to inject
the oil but on cold mornings keep the bottle in a pocket where it's warm
as it does get really thick and hard to take into the syringe. |
|
Lures.
|
I don't use
these much but they do come in lots of weird colours shapes and size's.
Remember if you are going to spin use an 18" wire trace of at least
25lb, attach normal swivel at one end and at the business end a
quick release swivel which makes changing lures far quicker and
lessens the chance of being snapped. When using monofilament line to the
lure the pike has more chance of cutting through it with their sharp teeth
and when they do you have a pike swimming around with trebles still in
it's mouth which could for the sake of a few pounds could prevent the pike
from dieing of starvation. |
Unhooking Mat.
Unhooking mats (Bottom right) are important to use when bank
surfaces are very hard and sometimes very stony. It's for the safety of
the pike as they do tend to thrash around and can cause damage to
themselves, and more comfortable for you when you have the pike between
your legs and that way having total control of unhooking the pike safely.
Remember to have wet hands while touching or handling the pike as they
have a coating of slime to protect them from stress and disease. |
|
Pike Sack.
|
Pike sack (bottom left) ideal for weighing
and if the pike shows signs of any distress can also be used as a recovery
keep bag, so it can be released when fully recovered. |
Butt Indicators.
Butt indicators for deadbait fishing for
predators, when the reel is often fished free spool, butt indicators can
be mounted to the rear rod rest, so that they rise and then pull off the
line when a run starts. |
