Baits.
Always remember to
de-barb two of the barbs on a treble, insert the barbed hook to the bait you are
going to use, and leave the two unbarbed hooks showing it makes life a lot
easier to and far quicker unhooking the pike and less stressful for the fish.
Eel.
|
Eel sections
about 6 inch are deadly bait for pike, try to keep bait size above 4 inch.
An excellent slimy covered bait, great for long distance casting as they
rarely come off the hook while casting |
Mackerel.
|
Half Mackerel
baits are another excellent casting bait, plenty of oil escapes once in
the water, my method is putting tiny gashes down the sides before casting.
Ensure one of the treble hooks is in the root of tail. Both head and tails
are good. |
Sand
Eels.
|
Sand eels try to
purchase the larger type about 8 inch in length. My method using these is
to air inject them with a couple of swan shot just up the trace so they
are just popped up of the bottom. |
Sardines.
|
Sardines are probably
the most oiliest of fishes to use and tend to have a few when going on a
fishing trip. They require a bit of care in the hooking and i usually tie
some fishing line around the body just to hold it on instead of it
coming off while casting no point in feeding them up with no hooks
attached. |
Smelts.
|
Smelts are deadly bait
for pike, again soft bait needs some attention while hooking up. |
Sprats.
|
Sprats are an excellent,
cheap bait, hooking method that has worked best for me is one treble in
mid-flank with the second in the tail. |
