Reviews for Super Mario RPG

JEFF's Review

This game was a very good idea. The fact that the Mario games already had a story means that it could probably turn into a great RPG, and it did.

The game starts out simple enough as every Mario game has. Rescue the @#$%#&$ Princess. Well you go to Bowser's domain, and sure enough you save that helpless Peach. Bowser has been foiled again! Well, don't cheer too loud because a gigantic sword comes crashing down on Bowser's Castle. Ah ha! A plot twist! C'mon, did you think the game would be a good one if you were trying to save Peach the whole time?? Heh, you even get to control her as well as Bowser. Didn't see that one coming.

The characters consist of Mario, Mallow, Geno, Peach, and Bowser. The party that was my main one consisted of Mario (of course), Mallow (I only used him because of Star Rain, a powerful attack, and Psychopath, shows enemy's HP and a quote from the enemy), and Peach (yes, the seemingly useless character actually has restore magic which is extremely vital to your party if you want to keep them alive). Bowser is OK at first because he is so strong but his magic is somewhat lacking. You have to rotate the control pad for a lot of the spells, and they pretty much suck. Wow....poison.....On the other hand Geno is pretty decent. I would sub him in for Mallow if anybody. His spells are pretty strong, as are his attacks.

Now, on to the graphics. They are top-notch quality. All of the characters are fully rendered, and never look pixelated, except the dreaded intro. The unique, rendered world is made so that Mario doesn't just go from side to side, he goes all over the place. And no, I'm not talking about #1.

Now, like the graphics, the sound is very good. Returning are several classic Mario tunes that have become even more enjoyable to listen to. I especially liked the tune played at Booster's Tower, when Mario can walk behind a curtain and come out on the other side as the Mario from Super Mario Bros.! He looks exactly the same as the NES classic and it plays the great original music! That is a really, really cool addition.

Now the gameplay is superb for a Mario game. There are many secrets and minigames, and a fun story that's very enjoyable to play through. The cool thing is that you will run into old enemies, as well as new ones. You will see goombas, wigglers, spikeys, koopa troopas, and many others, all fully rendered. Also, like Poo said, the game pretty much plays like a platformer. You can see your enemy in the world before you engage in a battle with them, much like Earthbound. I don't see how the gameplay could be improved; it's flawless.

Now the control is very good. Unlike Earthbound, you can run, which helps in speeding along the game. Of course you can jump, and Mario can jump real high. In some towns Mario is famous. Townspeople would even beg Mario to jump one time, and they would cheer for him. Jumping is also good because if you don't feel like battling an enemy, you can just jump over them, and that's pretty darn convenient.

If you've never played this game.....play it!!! It might not make you come back after you've defeated it twice, but because it's a pretty short game, you might wanna consider playing it one last time. It's fun, so buy now.

POO's Review

When I started up the game, the first thing to come into mind were the huge pixels in the beginning when Peach is captured. The other weird part of it was that the beginning to the game was also the intro when you started a new file. But when i got into the game, everything changed.

First of all, the battles are as good as you would expect from a Square game, with a few extra implements that make the game even better. The Timed hits are a good addition to the battles, requiring you to not just select commands and watch. Also, you can see your enemies before they attack you, and can avoid them by jumping over them or going around them, making all of the worlds like levels in a platformer game. Too bad games nowadays just make the battles randomized.

Also, save points are frequently placed right before a hard part or boss is, making it easier to retrace your steps instead of having to go a long ways before getting back to the place you died.

Also, SMRPG has many funny parts, like how Mario, in the tradition of Chrono Trigger, doesnt talk and only acts out his adventures. They also include many little features, like racing your Yoshi, working off your debts, the part where you can change into the old Mario accompanied by his music, and many other little features. Buy this game if you can.
