NEW ROSS

New Ross

New Ross was founded in 1204 by the Earl of Pembroke William Marshall and his wife Isobella. (Daughter of Strongbow and Aoife). It has a picturesque stance on the steep hills by the river Barrow. During the middle ages it was a lively trading port with many Europeans roaming the narrow steep streets. Alas like most irish towns, New Ross was drained of its population due to successive invasions and English surpression. One of its most famous emigrants is Patrick Kennedy, grandfather to the president of the USA, JF Kennedy. The people of New Ross built the town walls at the end of the 13th century and part of these still stand. Several gates provided access through these walls to the town. However only one of these gates still stand - Fair Gate. St. Mary's church is the oldest building in New Ross and was also built in the 13th century.

One of the popular attractions in New Ross is the River Barrow. During the fair weather seasons you can see many pleasure crafts cruising the river heading south to Waterford or North to Greiguemanagh. You can even travel as far as Dublin or Shannon from there. The Galley is a floating resturant that cruises from Waterford to New Ross and you can watch the unspoilt scenery of yesteryear as you sip wine on its decks and watch the world go by.

New Ross is the gateway to many nearby interesting sights. The beaches of Duncannon, Fethard on Sea, Booley Bay and Dollar Bay. There are many ruined castles and Abbeys nearby - Tintern Abbey, Dunbrody Abbey and Castle, Duncannon Fort and Ballyhack Castle to name but a few. And of course there is the JF Kennedy Park a beautiful park with all kinds of trees and flowers and a panaramic view from Slieve Coillte.

The New Ross Golf club is just 2km from New Ross itself and it is a fine 18 hole parkland course. On the Quayside of New Ross lies the Dunbrody Famine Ship - a replica of the type of ships that carried millions of Irish to the shores of America.
