Day 13
Tuesday July 21, 2020
Up early today and finished packing up for the flight home. A check of the United website showed everything in order.
I left the D and headed out. First stop to gas up the car. Next up, rental car center to return the car. This went well and there were no surprises.
The shuttle ride to the terminal was smooth. When I arrived at the United check in area it was slow. Since I'm flying first class today I got to use the priority line.
Next up was security. Same old same old here.
I grabbed a sandwich at Port of Subs to hold me over through the flight. They make a good sandwich but the airport prices suck.
I wandered through a very slow terminal killing time. I popped 10 bucks into a tight airport slot and actually won $6!
I found my gate and got settled in and waited for boarding to begin. When it did I was one of the first on. This is flight 476 non stop to Newark. It's scheduled to depart at 1:30pm and arrive in Newark at 9:23pm with a flight time of 4 hours and 53 minutes The captain came on said it was going to take 4:20.
The flight was pretty smooth. I passed the time the usual way sleeping, watching TV and playing on my phone. There are no more meals in first class but they gave each of us a snack box. These are what you can normally buy in coach.
We landed in Newark and taxied for a while to the gate. I was one of the first off which meant nothing because I had to go to baggage claim to wait for my suitcase. Newark is the worst when it comes to baggage claim.
Once I had my luggage I was off to Avis to pick up a car to get me home. They are doing construction in Newark so I had to get on and off the monorail to get to Avis. I swear every time I fly out of here there's some type of monorail issues.
I reserved a mid sized for $77 base and $113 all in. A bit high but what can you do?
My name was not up on the scoreboard. I had to wait in line behind 2 other people. 45 minutes later I was given a car. Then the agent realized it was in the Budget lot and had to give me another one. This car had a huge dent in it. No way I'm taking this. Another 15 minutes and I finally had a car.
The reason it took so long is they are short staffing this place. The desk agent is also letting people out at the security gate. WTF? I asked him about my name not being up on the board and being preferred I'm not supposed to have to wait. All he did was make excuses.
Avis has also been telling me by e-mail and by signs posted all over the place how they are keeping me safe yet this asshole was wearing his mask as a chin guard.
They assigned me a Ford Hybrid. I gave it a look and off I went. I never drove one of these before. Really quiet when it's running on the battery. It got great gas mileage too. It only took $3 to fill it up before I returned it.
The ride home was uneventful and pretty standard for this time of night. I swung by a drive through at McDonald's for a late night bite to eat.
I pulled into my driveway at exactly midnight as another Las Vegas trip came to an end.
