Andrew Lloyd kicked a 29 yard field goal in overtime to give Eastern Kentucky University a 36-33 victory over Eastern Illinois University.  Nick Bruno kicked a 35 yard field goal early in the third quarter to give Eastern Illinois a 26-5 lead and at that time the lead seemed insurmountable.  However, Eastern Kentucky showed a sign of life when Jared McClain scored on a 28 yard run and Lloyd tacked on the conversion kick to make the score 26-12 with 7:31 left in the third quarter and the score remained 26-12 entering the final period.  Eastern Kentucky continued to rally in the final quarter as Jared McClain threw a 5 yard touchdown pass to Devin Borders and Lloyd kicked the extra point to make the score 26-19 with 13:04 remaining in the game.  The defense stepped up as Eastern Kentucky’s Devin Borders blocked a field goal attempt by Nick Bruno and recovered the ball on the EKU 34.  The Colonels were forced to punt but Shepard Little fumbled the punt and Eastern’s Jon Floyd recovered on the Eastern Illinois 14 yard line.  Dy’Shawn Mobley scored on a 1 yard run and Lloyd tacked on the conversion kick to make the score 26-26 with 9:25 left in the game.

Eastern Illinois was forced to punt on their ensuing possession and Eastern Kentucky took over on the Eastern Illinois 39.  Eastern Kentucky buoyed by a roughing the passer penalty moved down the field and took a 33-26 lead on a Dy’Shawn Mobley 2 yard run and a Lloyd conversion kick with 4:46 left on the clock.  Eastern Illinois promptly marched down the field and Jalen Whitlow connected with Adam Drake for a two yard touchdown and Nick Bruno tacked on the extra point to make the score 33-33 with 1:04 remaining in regulation.  Eastern Kentucky’s next possession ended with an interception and the game went to overtime.  Eastern won the coin toss and elected to go on defense.  Eastern Illinois’ possession ended with a fumble by Shepard Little which was recovered by Eastern’s Kiante Northington at the 23 yard line.  Eastern elected to go for the field goal on third-and-6 and Eastern Illinois called two timeouts in an attempt to “ice’ the kicker but Andrew Lloyd calmly kicked the ball through from 29 yards out for the victory.

Eastern Kentucky University recorded 24 first downs and 436 yards of total offense.  The Colonels were penalized eight times for 75 yards, lost a fumble, and had two passes intercepted.  Eastern Illinois University recorded 27 first downs and 517 yards of total offense.  The Panthers were penalized seven times for 47 yards and lost three fumbles.

Dy’Shawn Mobley led Eastern Kentucky’s ground game with 118 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries.  Jared McClain carried the ball 13 times for 53 yards and a touchdown.  Jared McClain completed 17 of 29 passes for 198 yards and a touchdown with one interception.  Bennie Coney completed three of seven passes for 22 yards with one interception.  Dy’Shawn Mobley caught five passes for 63 yards.  Scott Daniel added four receptions for 34 yards.  Devin Borders caught three passes for 61 yards and a touchdown.  Brandon Stanley led the defense with nine solo and seven assisted tackles.  Kiante Northington added seven solo and five assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a four yard loss and recovered a fumble.  Tyrelle Johnson recorded two solo and nine assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a 10 yard loss.

Woodford County vs. Franklin County

Franklin County High School
Frankfort, KY
October 10, 2014

© 2014 by Ron Harrison

Franklin County held on to defeat Woodford County 14-6 on a rainy night in which the natural grass field was turned into a mud pit making ball security and footing virtually impossible.  Woodford County put the ball on the ground nine times but only lost two of the fumbles.  Franklin County made a goal line stand late in the final quarter to preserve the victory.  Franklin County held a 7-0 lead late in the first half when Jhanny Rodriguez fielded a punt and raced 71 yards to the Woodford County three where he attempted to cut to avoid the last remaining defender and in the treacherous footing tripped over his lead blocker.  However the great effort was rewarded as Landon Hurst scored on a three yard run and Seiver Tandy converted to give the Flyers a 14-0 lead at halftime.  Woodford County refused to fold and led by the hard running of Emir Bernabe rallied and closed the gap to 14-6 on a one yard touchdown by Bernabe with 10:57 left in the final quarter.  Woodford County had another excellent chance and drove the ball deep into Franklin County territory but the Flyers held on a fourth down play to earn the victory.

Franklin County recorded six first downs and 152 yards of total offense.  The Flyers were penalized three times for 25 yards and lost a fumble.  Woodford County recorded nine first downs and 194 yards of total offense.  The Yellowjackets were penalized three times for 20 yards, lost two fumbles, and had a pass intercepted.

Landon Hurst led Franklin County’s ground game with 59 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.  Sam Anderson carried the ball 13 times for 41 yards and a touchdown.  Barrett Sanderson completed five of six passes for 56 yards.  Jhanny Rodriguez caught one pass for 31 yards.  Logan Duke led the defense with five solo tackles.  DeMarcus Kennedy added three solo tackles and intercepted a pass.

Emir Bernabe led Woodford County’s ground game with 105 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.  Kaine Maxberry carried the ball 11 times for 52 yards.  Trey Thurman completed one of three passes for nine yards with one interception.  Kaine Maxberry caught one pass for nine yards.  Malik Richards and Emir Bernabe led the defense with four solo and one assisted tackles each.  Dalton Rose added four solo tackles.
