Brewing
the fermenting of grapes and other processes to create ale and wine and beer

Wine and ale were brewed by ale-wives using wheat, barley, and/or oats. Often, a castle or manor would have its own ale-wives to brew ale and wine from the manor's or castle's special stores. These drinks were an immense part of the culture of the Middle Ages. Ale marked every occasion. There were funeral ales, birthing ales, wedding ales, New Years ales, Christmas ales, Easter ales, and just plain happy ale times. Ale was the common drink of the servant and peasant, while those better-off financially drunk beer and wine.
