At the Table
seating arrangement according to importance and status

It was not uncommon in the Middle Ages to entertain guests for dinner. Guests to a table always were served and attended to first. They sat at the high table, arranged in order of importance. Servants presented appetizers (mostly bread and butter), drink, then food first to the important guests and then to the rest of the party. There were usually two people per platter at the table. Soup and drink were shared amongst the eaters at the table, using the same spoon and goblet for everybody. The less important of platter sharers helped their plate parter with their cutting and serving, and then served themselves.
