VATERA BEACH
Vatera is a village in the south of Lesbos Island, a little over 50 kilometers from the main town Mytilini. The village has about 8 kilometers of uninterrupted sandy beach. This is one beach that seems to extend forever and kilometers of it are as good as deserted, so it also offers something good for those of us that prefer a little privacy. This is by far the best beach that I have seen on the entire island! Because the village is in the south, it is protected from the northern winds that usually come in August and September. Vatera Beach has been awarded the Blue Flag for its clean waters. The area around Vatera invites you for making walks through its beautiful surroundings, to enjoy the nature and several archeological sights. The town of Vatera itself stretches a couple kilometers and is made up of some really nice tavernas, some Italian restaurants, several small bars, and a few shops. It's a place perfect for families, for relaxation and a perfect place for watching sunsets while enjoying a coffee or an early ouzo. The best way to get to Vatera is to take the road to Polychnitou that begins on the main Mytilini road near the gulf of Yera, or if you are coming from Eressos or Molyvos take the road that begins in the eastern part of the gulf of Kaloni. This is a beautiful trip along the gulf and through forests, olive groves, villages and farms.

VATERA BEACH - MADONNA STUDIOS AND APARTMENTS
Madonna is centrally located, 150 meters from the Vatera beach at its most central point, the signs junction. From Madonna it will take you 2 min. to walk to the beach and 5 min. to walk to the shops, tavernas and bars, lining the esplanade. Travelling on the main road from Vrisa to Vatera and just before you reach the beach, there is a small crossroads. You turn left and the property rises before you, holding a vantage point over the bay of Vatera. It is sign posted with a large reflector sign at the right side of the cross roads, with a red arrow pointing to your left, clearly visible as you approach the last 100 m to the beach, and smaller signs at the border and gate of the property. You just cannot miss it now, even at night! This attractive complex opened in 1990 and is run as a family business. To start with it operated as self-catering accommodation for independent Greek and International holidaymakers. In the late 90s it experienced a very successful three-year period with a well-known UK Tour Operator, but for the last five years a conscious choice was made to revert to its old client group of Independent Holidaymakers and it has done so very successfully. The property has been constantly improved over the years, to keep up with modern trends and requirements. As from late 2004 it has the facilities to provide the Hotel type services of reception, breakfast room, licensed bar, Internet Cafe, sale of tobacco, guides, maps, postcards, stamps safety boxes in the rooms and as always nothing is too much trouble for the obliging English speaking owners (they lived in the United Kingdom for many years and then returned to Lesbos), Dimitra and Vaios. Prices start at 30 euro (2006) for a studio and breakfast can be included for 5 euro a day per person. The building is placed zigzag, so there is privacy on each balcony and you are not overlooked by the neighbours. Around the building there are lovely pots with flowers (see pictures above). Your very social and friendly host Dimitra is really involved in the environment and the nature, and she can tell you what places are worth visiting, and where you can best go birdspotting or make a lovely walk. She can also help you rent a good car and give you good tips on where to drive to ;) like she did with us. This lady is a real sweetheart, and she's married to a guy with a great sense of humor! Vatera is a very special place with a very relaxing atmosphere: there is no need to do anything, and besides swimming in the sea one of the things I enjoyed most was sitting on my balcony in the evening with a glass of wine, overlooking the village and the Vatera Bay while the sun is going down and casts purple and orange colors over the island of Chios that you can see in the distance.
