Lesvos is the largest island in the eastern Aegean Sea and one of the largest islands of Greece as a whole. Lesbos is not overwhelmed by the mass-tourism and outside the tourist centers such as Molyvos, one can find wonderful peaceful and quiet places. Even in Molyvos it was very quiet out of high season and we found the main beach as good as empty.

The island of Lesbos is characterized by its architecture, its beautiful bays and clean beaches. There is a very diverse nature and on Lesbos you can spot very special birds. The petrified forest in Sigri is unique in the world and definitely worth a visit, just like the coastal villages of Petra and Molyvos. Lesbos has some fascinating museums, that you definitely should not skip, such as the archaeological museum with finds from the prehistoric period. Art lovers should visit Teriade Museum of Modern Art, where work can be seen by Picasso, Matisse and Miro.

In many places on the island of Lesbos you can also find remnants of the ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine periods. In short: for lovers of nature, art, culture and nature and for lovers of beautiful beaches there is plenty to do and enjoy.

Lesbos is big enough to visit for a few weeks and tour around to see the various sights, museums, villages and beaches. If you visit the island is almost impossible to see everything in 1 time, so a good reason to return again to discover new places and revisit old ones. The villages are all different, have a beautiful architecture and have something for everyone. if you want to shop you go to the main town of Mytilene, and for the beaches you go to the west and south of the island. The west of the island and around the bays of Gera and Kalloni the nature is very green and in the west around Skala Eressos the landscape is rather intimidating and mountainous, but certainly no less beautiful. On Lesbos there are many different and unusual birds and many turtles walk through the landscape, but also swim in the lakes and rivers.

One of my favorite villages is Skala Eressos in the west, situated in a dramatic and the most beautiful bay of the island, and with a gorgeous beach (on one part nudism is allowed). In this village you can totally and completely relax, because it is far away from all the noise that you find in thet tourist centers. The streets of the town of Skala Eressos which border the beach are closed to all cars, making it quiet and safe to walk. More importantly you do not have to worry about the safety of your children. The town ends at the beach road but cafes and restaurants have built bamboo covered decks that extend out on to the sand so you can sit in the shade and watch your kids playing in the Aegean and not be more than a few feet away.

we stayed with the always good spiritted and helpful Nikolaos, who rents out a house on a very quiet location in the village, close to the beach. In this house there are three large apartments, each with a minimum of two bedrooms, and they all have a a very cozy veranda. All you really need to bring is your toothbrush, because the apartments come with all the luxury and style imaginable: not just airconditioning and satelite tv, but also a toaster, a coffee machine and a completely utelized kitchen.

Nikolaos doesn't care if you come alone, as a couple or with a whole group, and the prices are so good, there is no need to go anywhere else, because starting at 65 euro (in 2007) you already have a complete house that can accommodate 5 people. Go there!!

Vatera is a village in the south of Lesbos Island, a little over 50 kilometers from the main town Mytilini. The village has about 8 kilometers of uninterrupted sandy beach. This is one beach that seems to extend forever and kilometers of it are as good as deserted, so it also offers something good for those of us that prefer a little privacy. This is by far the best beach that I have seen on the entire island! Because the village is in the south, it is protected from the northern winds that usually come in August and September. Vatera Beach has been awarded the Blue Flag for its clean waters. The area around Vatera invites you for making walks through its beautiful surroundings, to enjoy the nature and several archeological sights. The town of Vatera itself stretches a couple kilometers and is made up of some really nice tavernas, some Italian restaurants, several small bars, and a few shops. It's a place perfect for families, for relaxation and a perfect place for watching sunsets while enjoying a coffee or an early ouzo. The best way to get to Vatera is to take the road to Polychnitou that begins on the main Mytilini road near the gulf of Yera, or if you are coming from Eressos or Molyvos take the road that begins in the eastern part of the gulf of Kaloni. This is a beautiful trip along the gulf and through forests, olive groves, villages and farms.

Madonna Studios and Apartments is centrally located, 150 meters from Vatera beach at its most central point, the signs junction. From Madonna it will take you 2 min. to walk to the beach and 5 min. to walk to the shops, tavernas and bars, lining the esplanade. Travelling on the main road from Vrisa to Vatera and just before you reach the beach, there is a small crossroads. You turn left and the property rises before you, holding a vantage point over the bay of Vatera. It is sign posted with a large reflector sign at the right side of the cross roads, with a red arrow pointing to your left, clearly visible as you approach the last 100 m to the beach, and smaller signs at the border and gate of the property. You just cannot miss it now, even at night!

This attractive complex opened in 1990 and is run as a family business. In the beginning it operated as self-catering accommodation for independent Greek and International holidaymakers. In the late 90?s it experienced a very successful three-year period with a well-known UK Tour Operator, but for the last five years a conscious choice was made to revert to its old client group of Independent Holidaymakers and it has done so very successfully. The property has been constantly improved over the years, to keep up with modern trends and requirements. As from late 2004 it has the facilities to provide the Hotel type services of reception, breakfast room, licensed bar, Internet Caf?sale of tobacco, guides, maps, postcards, stamps safety boxes in the rooms and as always nothing is too much trouble for the obliging English speaking owners, Dimitra and Vaios. Mithymna, or Molyvos as it is also called, in the north of the island of Lesbos is a very special and beautiful town and the first view of it is overwhelming. The town has about 1500 inhabitants and is situated 53 kilometers north of the capital Mitilini. Molyvos is situated on a small mountain topped by a dramatic medieval castle from the Byzantine period. Under the rule of Genua it was later extended and renovated. The original castle which this one replaced, was conquered by none other then Achilles during the Trojan war. There are still ancient ruins scattered around the town including impressive walls and a few giant holes where archaeologists have begun their slow work. The town of Molyvos itself is built against a steep hill and consists of stone houses with red tiled roofs, and shops which surround the castle and follow the coast to one of the most beautiful harbors in Greece. Molyvos attracts more tourists than anywhere else on the island, but it's still relatively quiet compared to certain other destinations in the Cyclades, Crete or Rhodes. The busy and cozy port of Molyvos is its most appealing feature, with sailboats and fishingboats in all shapes, sizes and colours. The main street of Molyvos that goes up the hill to the castle is made of cobbled stones and shaded with vines. It will lead you to the museums, shops, supermarkets, restaurants and some galleries before you reach the castle of Molyvos. In the heart of Molyvos you can find a nice pebble beach, that received an EU Blue Flag, and there are several other great beaches nearby, like Eftalou Beach (3km), Psiriara Beach, a long sandbeach next to the Molyvos main beach (with an option for naturists at the end of the beach), and Petra Beach (5km).

The Nassos Guest House is situated on the beautiful island of Lesvos.
