A wizard member of the White Council, and the driving force behind the quest to destroy the Ring. Gandalf appears as an old man, but is in fact a being of great power, sent by the Valar {Gods} to contest evil in Middle Earth. He and his fellow wizards {sometimes called Istair} are forbidden to challenge evil by direct confrontation, or to dominate the races of Middle Earth, but instead sent to rouse the Free People for resistance and guide them in their struggle.

Quote: Yes I, Gandalf the Grey"said the wizard solemnly."There are many powers in the world, for good or for evil. Some are greater than I am. Against some I have not yet been measured. But my time is coming. The Morgul-Lord and his Black Riders have come forth. War is preparing!".

Qoute: Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be to eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the wise cannot see all ends!.

Quote: Elrond drew Frodo to a seat by his side, and presented him to the company saying!"Here, my friends, is the hobbit, Frodo son of Drogo. Few have ever com hither through greater peril or on an errand more urgent!

Quote:
When evening in the Shire was grey,
his footsteps on the Hill were heard;
before the dawn he went away
on journey long without a word.
From the Wilderland to Western shore,
from northern waste to southern hill,
through dragon-lair and hidden door
and darkling woods he walked at will.
With Dwarf and Hobbit, Elves and Men,
with mortal and immortal folk,
with bird on bough and beast in den,
in their own secret tongues he spoke.
A deadly sword, a healing hand,
a back that bent beneath its load;
a trumpet-voice, a burning brand,
a weary pilgrim on the road.
A lord of wisdom throned he sat,
swift in anger, quick to laugh;
an old man in a battered hat,
Who leaned upon a thorny staff.
He stood upon the bridge alone,
And Fire and Shadow both defied;
his staff was broken on the stone,
in Khazad-du^m his wisdom died.

A Hobbit of the Shire, and a cousin to Frodo Baggins. Like Pippin, Merry is a close friend of Frodo and joins him on the journey to Rivendell. In recognition of this Merry is added to the Fellowship of the Rings.

Quote: I don't wonder said Merry," and I wish you could, But we are envy of Sam, not you, If you have to go, then it will be punishment for any of us to be left behind, even in Rivendell. We have come a long way with you and been through some stiff times. We want to go on."

Quote: And one Hobbit! cried Merry'Not all of us look on boats as wild horses. My people live by the banks of the Brandywine!

Quote: "Whatever it may be; said Pippin 'they will be marvellous trees indeed if you can offer any rest at night, except to birds. I cannot sleep on perch! The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

Renewed shall be blade that was broken:
