Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü - İstanbul
The first ever national professional Turkish league started in 1959. It was named as "Milli Lig" (National League).
There were professional leagues only in three cities - Ankara, İstanbul, İzmir - at the time.
During the first half of the 1958-59 season, the clubs played in their own regional leagues to qualify to the Milli Lig. Top 8 clubs from İstanbul and top 4 clubs both from Ankara and İzmir were admitted to the league.
The first half of the season were spent by the qualifications and Milli Lig could start during the second half, literally in 1959 calendar year. That's why, the first year is referred as 1959 Milli Lig rather than 1958-59 Milli Lig.
1959 Milli Lig was played in two stages - the Groups and the Final.
First stage - The clubs played in 2 groups, which were named after the colours of the Turkish flag as Red and White. The winners of each group qualified to the second stage. 2 points were awarded to each win and 1 for each tie. The tie-breaker used for the clubs finishing at equal points is the result of a division of goals scored for into goals scored against (average goal scored per goal allowed).
Second stage - was played as a two legged knock-out final.
No clubs were relegated, 4 clubs got promoted after a promotion league. The promotion league was renamed as "Federasyon Kupası" the first year, but was renamed as "Baraj" games after the first year.
