  • Bluff Mode

Are you tired of your buddies constantly adjusting their defenses according to those revealing three plays you flip through on the play choice menu screen? "I know, I know, I know" - sometimes this is optimal, allowing you to play mind games with your human opponents. Which play is it going to be?:

  • Play behind door #1?
  • Play behind door #2?
  • Play behind door #3?

It almost makes it tempting to just tell 'em you are running that HB TOSS, and dare them to stop it. But if your buddies are making your palms sweat with close games, and you are looking for a little extra added twist to the mind tease - try the new Bluff Mode in this year's Ncaa Football '99 title.

  • In previous EA Sports college football titles the method of bluffing was a little tacky and somewhat obvious when you were in the process of choosing a play. There was no bluffing the fact that you were "bluffing your play". In those older titles (Ncaa '98 -right-), we were left to choose our play calling as either bluff mode or direct before the game began in the Game Setup Screen. I am sure it felt uncomfortable for some, having to resort to choosing bluff mode while your opponent opted to stay in the direct play calling method. It almost kind of made you look intimidated having to resort to a constant state of "bluff". Besides, when choosing so, you were left without that tantilizing mind game that only resides in the direct method of play calling - taking away some of the mind game strategy...and fun.

space gifA New State Of Bluff

In Ncaa Football '99, EA Sports has brought us to a "new state of bluff". Now we can combine the best of both worlds. Now we can subtly bluff off and on, never allowing your opponent to know otherwise until the damage has been done. This can be done simply by pressing and holding both (L1 L2) - and then pressing either (X), (circle), or (square) accordingly.

  • NOTE: The chosen bluff play will always be the play below the displayed play.

Whether you choose to bluff or not is entirely up to you. You can bluff once per game, or entirely throughout. I recommend you mix it up. Bluffing subtly, maybe once per twenty snaps of the ball, will still "condition" your opponent to defend what he/she is seeing on the on the screen. Then when it counts most, throw in a bluff play. This makes for a much better mind game, enhancing your deception.

The bluff can be most effective when you use the most dynamic combinations between a adjacent above play (displayed play) and below play (hidden bluff play) from the same formation. Whatever you do, again I recommend do what works best for your style of play. This will always be my best advice.

If you are looking for a few examples, below I list a compilation of my personal combinations of bluff plays. This may give you a immediate visual reference of some dynamic side by side play combinations.

  • NOTE: The chosen bluff play is displayed on the lower half of each displayed series. The other options are hazed out for a easier distinction between the bottom three. The chosen bluff play may not always be the best choice depending on the situation. These are just examples of bluffs that I have used often.
