Grounding Exercise - The Earth Visualization

Thursday, June 19, 2003

I've been working on the Earth Visualization for several days now, with different results each time I try it.   I noticed one night, as I practiced, I got much better results doing the visualization while my boyfriend played his guitar from the other room. I was able to relax more and see the images of the visualization more clearly than when I attempted it alone.

I started off by laying on the bed in the other room.  I closed my eyes and begin to breathe deeply, letting go of my tensions of the day.  After that, I began the visualization, by feeling myself floating down through the bed, the floors, the concrete and all that until I was laying in the dirt.  I stretched out my hands and dug my fingers into the dirt, letting my fingers take "root" in the ground.  After my fingers were firmly planted, my hair began to root itself to the ground as well.

I didn't allow any bugs to crawl over me, because I have a sincere fear of insects (I don’t know why either) so I just let my roots grow deep into the earth, anchoring me and keeping nourished.

It was strange to try and feel all the warmth sucked out of my body, but I did attempt it, and with minor success I might add.  Overall it was an interesting experience.

I’ve found that the visualization works better for me however if I do it during the day, instead of the night, and also it’s more helpful if I sit in a chair rather that lie on the floor.  When I lay down, my body wants to sleep, not do something else.

So, anyway, once I started doing the visualization this way, I tried experimenting with it.  I decided finally that I liked the way that it’s written, and I even let the bugs crawl over me. I noticed that once I had reached that anchored feeling… it was like I went into a trance mode… you know when you just get a little spacey.  Where my mind was completely alert and just whirling away, but my body was still… my mom came and gave me a surprise visit yesterday, and she thought I had fallen asleep sitting in the chair.  So, anyway, I’ve had a pretty good time working with this exercise, and it challenged me to still my mind and take control of it.  It’s definitely something that I will incorporate in my day to day life, just to help put myself back into perspective.

Great visualization. I find it's difficult to talk to much about a visualization because they are, by nature, very personal. Just a couple of questions before you post it to the main list: Where did you "go" in your visualization - was it someplace familiar that you've been to in reality, or was it someplace totally new and strange? Did you see anything that varied from the visualization? Anything that struck your consciousness?

Wow, I hadn't even thought of where I went... it actually is somewhere I've been before... when I was a little girl, my grandmother lived in the woods (I used to feel like "Little Red Riding Hood") and there was this little tiny area where a huge tree had fallen years ago. Anyway, the area where the tree once stood had turned into a little overgrowth cave type area and I used to play there all the time as a child... it's really hard to describe, but that's where I go when I do this visualization. The only thing that was different was the addition to a lake and the fact that the area was underground instead of above ground.
