I think that the purpose of the Circle is to serve as a
worship space for wiccans in general. Like
a Church, Synagogue or Mosque, the Circle is our place of worship.
It helps to shift our consciousness away from the more mundane side of
life towards the spiritual.
It also serves as a container for the power raised within
it, and is a place that is neither in the physical nor the non-physical realms
of earth. What I mean, is that the
Circle is a boundary the caster creates, a sphere of energy that surrounds the
caster and any other people worshipping with them, and holds the power that they
raise within its boundary until they are ready to release the power.
Looks good, but, of course, I have
a further thinking question: Why a >circle? Think about the definition of a
circle and it's many occurences >in nature, do those maybe have some bearing
on why Wiccans chose a circle?
A circle is round (reminds me of kindergarten) and to me, it makes the flow of
energy more conducive to whatever workings I may be doing. When I think of a
wiccan circle, I’m picturing more of a sphere, mostly because a bubble is a
more 3 dimensional shape, and goes below the ground as well as above (as above,
so below) and has no weak points in it. It is one of the strongest of the
shapes, and there is no point in the sphere that energy cannot flow easily. I
think that that is probably the reason why many Wiccans choose to use a circle
(sphere) rather than any other shape, because of it’s strength.
I remember seeing a Volkswagen commercial on TV and it was making references to
the shape of a sphere in the Roman Aqueducts and how they’ve been standing
firm since the day they were built. This was attributed to the strength that the
sphere has, it can hold a lot of weight, and has been proven to withstand the
test of time.
