The Wiccan Gods

Thursday, August 14, 2003

I’ve always been interested in mythology.  It’s something I’ve been drawn to ever since I was a kid.  My first introduction to divinity that wasn’t related to Christianity came in the 5th grade, when a friend of mine loaned me his book on Greek Mythology.  It was amazing, and once, when I was really excited about what I was reading, my grandmother accused me of worshipping “false gods”.  I replied rather sarcastically to her – “Yes, Grandma, I worship Greek mythology – Oh mighty Apollo I pray to thee!”  She didn’t think it was very funny… but it was a start of a lifelong journey to knowledge, a study of various cultures and their myth cycles.

When I first came to Wicca, I thought that everyone only followed the gods of their ethnic heritage, so since I am primarily Scandinavian and Celtic, I tried to worship the gods of those cultures.  As I grew as a Wiccan, I realized that I didn’t really feel for those gods, and had always been drawn back to the origins of my passion – the Greek pantheon.  I felt drawn to them, and began to worship them instead.  It fit, and so now, these are the gods that I pray to.

I think that, while we do have a choice in what gods we worship, the Gods themselves also have a hand in our choices.  I had a wonderful experience with the Goddess Branwen (who is Welsh in origin), so I also pray to Her.  I feel that She chose me as one of her worshippers, and I consider Her one of my Matron deities, along with the gods of the Greek pantheon.

Looks good to me, of course I have my "thought" question for you. What do you think it was that drew you to the Greek Pantheon? Was there something that you can name that spoke to you?

I'm not sure exactly what it was that drew me to the Greek Pantheon... it was just "something" that brought me back to them... I think one reason was because they were the first gods that I got a chance to learn about, as well as, to me, they were glorious.   Beautiful (for the most part...) they spoke to me in ways that I'd never before experienced.  It was like being awakened after a long sleep.  My eyes were opened to the knowledge that the other gods of the world were real, and that they could be worshipped, and not feared so much as the Christian God was.

I said before that I learned a lot about different Myth cycles from different cultures, and it was very personally enriching, but for some reason I never really felt the "pull" to worship other deities.  I've had really great experiences with the Greek pantheon.   I've done lots of meditations on the different gods and goddesses, in order to gain a more personal experience with them.  And the ones that I got the best results from were with the Greek pantheon.
