Wonders of the Ancient World These wonders of the world were actually all located near the Eastern Mediterranean region. Apart from the Great Pyramid the other wonders were built during the previous 400 years. One was located in the European coastal area of Greece, one on a Greek island in the Aegean, and the remainder in Asia and Africa.
A second list to the original "wonders of the world" was ascribed to Philo of Byzantium a Greek rhetorician of the second century B.C. The only variation was his inclusion of the Walls of Babylon in addition to the Hanging Gardens. He omitted the Pharos of Alexandria. Variations were made by later authors prompted by piety, patriotism and chronology; but only the lists of Antipater and Philo have been generally accepted. It was not until the 17th century that efforts were made to depict these wonders. |
