Wonders of the Modern Age The completion of the Empire State Building in 1931 marked an occasion for relishing the world's great masterpieces of the building craft. The Great Pyramid remains from antiquity to head the list. The Hagia Sophia of Constantinople and the Leaning Tower of Pisa have survived from the Middle Ages.
Often included in variant lists are the Panama Canal, the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge, And the Sky Line and underground transportation systems of New York City. Other compilers of "wonder" lists include famous temples, churches and shrines such as the Greek Parthenon on the Acropolis at Athens, the medieval Mont-Saint-Michel off the coast of France, St. Peter's Church in Rome, and the temples and shrines of Nikko National Park in Honshu, in Japan. Famous places and ruins include the Moorish, Alhambra of Granada, Indo-China's Angkor in Cambodia, ancient Mayan ruins like Chichen Itza in Mexican Yucatan, Inca ruins of Cuzco and the Machu Picchu in Peru, and Egypt's Great Temple of Amon in Karnak. |
