Wonders of Modern Science In the recent years attention has been shifted more and more from remarkable building structures to the wonders of scientific discoveries and inventions. A shift of emphasis is apparent in the concern for public utility in such structures as the Panama Canal or Empire State Building, in contrast to the thirty-year exploitation in ancient Egypt of 100,000 laborers to provide a tomb for one man. The employment of science today for the comfort and convenience of society is a wonder of wonders in the history of man. The fact that modern science has also opened channels of destruction as well as construction even heightens its fascination for man. In Physics, spectrum analysis has opened regions of new discovery; the dynamo has provided electrical energy; electronics has contributed numerous devices like the "nuclear-eye", radar, and the electron-microscope; and nuclear physics has made possible the release and use of atomic energy. Chemical research has given industry such materials as alloys, plastics, synthetic detergents and textile fibers; biochemistry has opened extensive research and discovery in the chemical secrets of the human body. The employment of science in the service of society is illustrated in the wonders of transportation, communication and medicine.
