Miscellaneous Information

Being a series of lectures on the subject of magic in Thardferr, and our Guild

Lecture 1
An address to a worshipper of Aranthis, the Lord of Song, from an Elven member of the IMG

It is thy belief, as a worshipper of the Lord of Song, that magic should not be regulated by anyone, and should be free for the use of all. I wish this were possible. However, even within Edilar, where the Charmsingers are strong, there are many who have not the aptitude for spellbinding. There are MANY others who, having the aptitude, have spirits which are weak, ones who soon give in to corruption and evil. The Confederation, I feel, was correct in placing regulations on the use of magic, to prevent these individuals weak in spirit from placing themselves and others at risk.

It is thy belief, as a worshipper of the Lord of Song, that magic should not be regulated by anyone. I tell thee, within the Confederation, the only magics that are truly free belong to the IMA. If thou wouldst be a lone renegade, thine own mouth has confessed to the dificulty in learning. This is a severe handicap, a restriction regulating the use of thy Art. In fact, it seems this would be tantamount to blasphemy against the Lord of Song, for such is a self-imposed restriction on thy magic.

Again, whether thou art lone renegade or if thou art member of an illegal guild, thou hast further regulation in the form of the general populace. The peasants fear magic and those who weild it. The nobility of the non-elven lands are also full of superstition and ignorance. Were the people to recognize thy talents, and thee not bear the seal of the IMA, thou wouldst surely be executed, slaughtered by a rioting mob. Aranthis, I believe, would not be in favor of such.

The more I think on this, and the more I tell thee, the more I see that thy only real choice is to seek registration within the Imperial Mages' Academy. Only there mayest thou freely study the Art which binds us in spirit. Only there may thy talents grow unrestricted as is favored by thy God.

Lecture 2
The results of research into rumors of spells bound without the aid of somantic components

Searching through the burnt ruins of a once-great library, we have uncovered certain scraps of paper containing references to this matter. Unfortunately, the Syth burned many such libraries, and very few books containing lore concerning magical knowledge were preserved. What we have uncovered concerning spellbinding without the aid of somantic components are these few shards:

"... then did he utilize Non-verbalization, and the spells did fly without spoken word..."

"... and with his mind did he bolster the dweomer, so that no motions of hand nor fingers were required to summon nor guide the icy blue flames..."

"... such spellbinding practices are difficult in the extreme, and lost to all but the most learned of..
