Punked Out

Punked Out is a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event, broadcast annually in June by the professional wrestling promotion MECCA, though it was initially a bi-monthly event for the month of May. The first event took place on May 28, 2005, from the Bingham Theatre in Louisville, Kentucky. In 2007, the event was moved to June and broadcast live on pay-per-view, replacing Midsummer Night Slam. It also became host to the annual Eight-Man Throwdown series.

History

When MECCA began, its pay-per-view schedule was only bi-monthly. During the off months it offered special events, which were broadcast on local stations throughout the Midwest. Punked Out was announced in April of 2005 as the second of these bi-monthly specials.

In 2007 the event moved to pay-per-view, and the Eight-Man Throwdown was instituted as an annual part of the show. The winners of eight qualifying matches in the preceding weeks would meet in an eight-man tag team match where the teams were determined at random. The four winners would then go on to face off in a Four Way Dance later in the night, with a World Title shot at Summertimetime Showdown going to the winner. The concept was first used in RCW in the summer of 2004 as a way to determine the number one contender for the RCW Championship at Firestorm. A modified version was used in the summer of 2006 in MECCA in a similar capacity, with eight competitors being divided into two random tag team matches, with the winners facing off in a Four Way Dance.

Punked Out 2005

Background

Punked Out was the second bi-monthly event broadcast by MECCA. It took place at the Bingham Theatre in Louisville, Kentucky, on May 28, 2005. The event was released on DVD via the MECCA website several weeks later.

At The MECCA Challenge on April 30, CM Punk became the first MECCA Champion when he defeated Nykk to win the Round Robin Title Challenge. On the next episode of Go Time, Alan Mayse stepped up as his first challenger. Though Punk did not put the title on the line, they met in the main event, which Alan won by disqualification. The next week, MECCA authority Katie Piehl announced the initial Contender Star, which Mayse was a part of. She also announced that he would be Punk's first challenger at the next bi-monthly event, Punked Out. On the May 24 episode of Go Time, Alan solidified his status as number one contender going into Punked Out by pinning Punk in a tag team match.

At the MECCA Challenge, Nykk lost the final match in the Round Robin Title Challenge to CM Punk. However, victory was not enough for Punk. As he and Nykk shook hands, Punk's protege Eddie Crowe hit the ring and ambushed Nykk. He and Punk put the boots to him and Punk nailed Nykk in the head with the title, staining the belt with Nykk's own blood. Nykk wanted his revenge, but Katie Piehl named Alan Mayse as Punk's initial challenger. As a consolation, she told Nykk he could have any member of the MECCA roster he wanted at Punked Out. Nykk chose to face Eddie Crowe, vowing to teach him a lesson.

Punked Out 2006

Background

Punked Out was the fifth bi-monthly special broadcast live on FSN on May 27, 2006. It emanated from the Michigan State Fairgrounds in Detroit, Michigan.

At The MECCA Challenge II, Eddie Crowe won the MECCA Championship from Kevin Stone. On the May 10 episode of Go Time, two challengers stepped up in the form of the first Toughman Champion Alan Mayse and Low Ki. Both men had a legitimate claim to a shot and settled it in the main event, where Low Ki won the match between them. Ki would challenge Eddie to a six-man tag on May 24, with Eddie bringing his brother Jay Crowe and his best friend Dusty Schneble, the new Tag Team Champions. Ki would team with their challengers for Punked Out, The Killer Kanines and would go on to defeat Eddie, Dusty, and Jay.

At the MECCA Challenge II, Alan Mayse won the Toughman Tournament over Trent Acid and become the first holder of the Toughman Title. After having his bid for a World Title shot turned back by Low Ki, Mayse would fall victim to an attack by Acid, who busted open the new champion. Alan wanted payback and Acid wanted his rematch for the title. MECCA authority Katie Piehl gave them what they wanted, but made their rematch at Punked Out a First Blood match.

Punked Out 2007

Background

In 2007, MECCA increased its PPV schedule to one per month. As a result, Punked Out became a pay-per-view event and was moved to the month of June. The event was held at the Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco, California, on June 30, 2007. The event theme was "This is Who We Are" by Hawthorne Heights.

In June of 2007, The House of Lords had established itself as the dominant faction in MECCA. Nykk had complete control of the shows, and used his power to ensure Ronin Fox won the MECCA World Heavyweight Championship at New Dawn. They started taking out threats to their power, such as attacking both Kevin Stone and Low Ki as they were having a match for the MECCA Toughman Championship. However, on the June 13 episode of Go Time, Stone won a Supernova Spectacle for the right to challenge Fox for the title. The match was booked for Punked Out in the main event.

When Team MECCA beat The David Caldwell Project at The MECCA Challenge III, it was thanks in part to Bryan Danielson, who betrayed the Project and helped Team MECCA win the match. Danielson revealed that was his intention all along, but felt used when he found out that Nykk had been the one manipulating the Project behind the scenes, using it to pave the way for the House of Lords to take over. He and Nykk had a storied history in MECCA rings, and when Danielson returned to action in May, he vowed to take down the House of Lords. In attempt to stop him, Nykk accepted a challenge from Danielson for Punked Out to settle the score between them, and this time it would be the best two out of three falls.

In 2007, Punked Out played host to the Eight-Man Throwdown for the first time, a concept that had been used in RCW previously. Eight men would face off in random teams of four in an eight-man tag at the beginning of the night. The four winners would go on to meet in a Four Way Dance later on, with a shot at the World Title at Summertime Showdown on the line. Qualifying matches were held throughout the month, and the eight men who won the right to compete were Eddie Crowe, Alan Mayse, Joey Sprinklers, Delirious, Matt Sydal, Tristan Lee, and The UK Wrecking Crew.

Punked Out 2008

Background

Punked Out was broadcast live on pay-per-view by MECCA on June 28, 2008. It emanated from the Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis, Missouri.

Ever since losing the MECCA World Heavyweight Championship to Anubis at The MECCA Challenge IV, Nykk strove to regain it. However, he lost his rematch with Anubis on the June 11 edition of Go Time. In response to Nykk and Ronin Fox's attempts at ambush, Anubis recruited his partner The Wild Wolf to even the odds. A dream tag team match between The House of Lords and The Killer Kanines was booked for the main event of Punked Out.

At New Dawn, Alan Mayse finally succeeded in his quest to regain the MECCA Toughman Championship after losing it over a year before. However, on the very next episode of Go Time, he was defeated by Delirious for the belt after help from Mayse's rival and former champion Eddie Crowe. Both men felt they deserved a shot to regain the belt, so MECCA executor Katie Piehl booked them in a non-title Triangle Match against Delirious on June 18, stating if either man beat Delirious they would get a shot at him at Punked Out. But if Delirious scored the fall, the man he beat would not be able to challenge him for the title at all. Alan ended up winning the match by making Delirious tap to his dangerous Anklebreaker submission, earning his title rematch at Punked Out.

Once again, the Eight-Man Throwdown series returned to Punked Out, establishing it as an annual tradition. Eight men qualified over the course of the month, and would be put into two random teams of four. The winners of the eight-man tag would then go on to compete against one another in a Four Way Dance later in the night. The eight competitors to qualify were Jamie Chan, Bryan Danielson, Austin Lee, The Necro Butcher, Robbie, Eddie Crowe, and The Briscoes.

Punked Out 2009

Background

Punked Out was broadcast live on pay-per-view by MECCA on June 27, 2009. It emanated from the Odeum in Chicago, Illinois. It was part of a joint show held in conjunction with Ring of Honor, who promoted their own show in the afternoon. This would put the fans and locker rooms of both promotions into one building, which was a powder keg waiting to explode. The event theme was "Know Your Enemy" by Green Day.

In June of 2009, the MECCA vs. ROH rivalry was heating up. After being dominated by Team ROH throughout April and May, MECCA finally fought back and scored some tag team victories on Go Time. Top MECCA guys such as Nykk, Ronin Fox, and The EDJ entered the war and took it to their rival company. With both shows running in Chicago on June 27, an agreement was reached to hold a joint show in the same building, putting both locker rooms under the same roof. Looking to achieve the same success against ROH in singles as they did in tag team encounters, Ronin Fox would go up against former ROH World Champion Takeshi Morishima in the main event of Punked Out, while Nykk would go one on one with Davey Richards. However, Team ROH also invaded MECCA's annual Eight-Man Throwdown series, when Bryan Danielson, Roderick Strong, and Rhett Titus managed to qualify for the match. They were joined by MECCA competitors Jay Crowe, Eddie Crowe, Dusty Schneble, Robbie, and Ryan. They would be divided into two random teams of four, and the winners of the eight-man tag would go on to face one another in a Four Way Dance at the end of the night, with a shot at the MECCA World Heavyweight Championship on the line.

In May, Jamie Chan and Alan Mayse of The Consulate won the MECCA World Tag Team Championship. However, they had unfinished business with former champions The Briscoes, who brawled with Mayse and Chan to a double disqualfication back at Melee. The Briscoes wanted the belts back, and a title match against the new champions was booked for Punked Out.

Punked Out 2010

Background

Punked Out was broadcast live on pay-per-view by MECCA on June 26, 2010. It emanated from the Gwinnett Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The event theme was "999" by Chakras.

At The MECCA Challenge VI, Jamie Chan retained the MECCA World Championship by beating his former partner Alan Mayse. Eager to receive a rematch, Mayse took Chan on in tag team action on the April 27 edition of Go Time, but it was his partner Ryan Andrews who stepped up and stole the pin on Chan from Mayse. Andrews became the number one contender over the next few weeks, and Mayse was upset about it. In an attempt to appease him, Andrews offered him the first shot at the title if he won it from Chan. At New Dawn, Mayse attacked Chan in the locker room, attempting to reinjure him so he would have to forfeit the title to Andrews. However, Chan fought him off and made it to his No DQ Match with Andrews, picking up the win. However, Chan reinjured his ankle in the process and was out of action for several more weeks. Katie Piehl stated he would be back in time for Punked Out, and looked to crown a new number one contender. Mayse won a Four Corners Match on the June 9 edition of Go Time in a match involving two other members of the Contender Star. In addition to his new manager Dave Prazak negotiating on his behalf, Katie Piehl agreed to give him the title shot at Punked Out.

In early May, The UK Wrecking Crew was back together as Andy Nathans returned from injury. They set their sights on the MECCA World Tag Team Championship, but champions The Invincible Outlaws seemed reluctant to give them a shot. On the June 9 edition of Go Time, they goaded Austin Lee into facing one of them in a singles match in their hometown of London, and if the UKWC won, they would receive a title shot at Punked Out. Andy Nathans ended up beating Lee in the main event in front of their hometown crowd. Jack Fletcher took on Anubis on the next show, and won by DQ. Before Anubis could do lasting damage, Nathans ran down and they took out the big man. Realizing they needed to do something to stop their momentum, Anubis and Lee orchestrated an attack on the UKWC on June 23 with chairs, attempting to injure them just days before their title match.

The Eight-Man Throwdown returned to Punked Out with a shot at the World Title at Summertime Showdown on the line. The Wild Wolf was the first man to qualify, followed by The Creation on June 2. FIST, Ares and Davey Richards would qualify over the next few weeks. The former Pyro Twins, embroiled in their blood feud, cost each other the opportunity to qualify on June 16. First, Dusty Schneble cost Jay Crowe his match against Icarus. Later in the night, Jay appeared during Dusty's match with Jack Evans, distracting Dusty long enough to be counted out. Jay then attacked Dusty, revealing that he had him in a match at Punked Out.

Punked Out 2011

Background

Punked Out was broadcast live on pay-per-view by MECCA on June 25, 2011. It emanated from the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio.

At The MECCA Challenge VII, The Absence of Light won guaranteed title shots when they won the finals of the Trios Tag League. This was good, since their leader Jimmy Jacobs would go on to lose the World Title to Jamie Chan later in the night. With Jacobs failing to win the title back at New Dawn, Dusty Schneble stepped up to cash in his guaranteed title shot against Chan at Punked Out. He stated that if hew on the title, he would hand it back to Jacobs so the Absence of Light would continue to hold all the power.

Jacobs had problems of his own to contend with. The previous September, he had injured Eddie Crowe en route to a victory over him. On the June 1 episode of Go Time, Eddie returned to save his brother Jay and Jamie Chan from the Absence of Light. Eddie immediately sought a rematch with Jacobs, and wanted it under No DQ rules. Jacobs and Katie Piehl didn't immediately have a response, but Jacobs eventually accepted his challenge the very next week.

For a couple of months, The UK Wrecking Crew had been fighting the numbers game of Upstarts International. They lost to Ares and Caron at New Dawn, thanks to interference from Reno. But the UK Wrecking Crew were not about to let it go, and said they could bring all their members at Punked Out, because they were willing to face them in a handicap match. Upstarts International accepted the challenge, and the match was made for June 25.

Punked Out 2012

Background

Punked Out was broadcast live on pay-per-view by MECCA on June 30, 2012. It emanated from the Timmons Arena in Greenville, South Carolina.

At The MECCA Challenge VIII, Austin Lee became the new World Champion, but it was also a big night for Ryan Andrews, who beat eleven other men to win the Battlebrawl. On the May 30 episode of Go Time, Andrews followed up by winning a spot on the Contender Star. Later that night, he confronted Lee and challenged him to a match for the MECCA World Championship at Punked Out. Austin accepted, but Andrews's tag team partner Jimmy Rave wanted a title match as well and Austin gave one to him in the main event, to Andrews's consternation. Andrews did what he could to help Rave, but his interference backfired and Austin retained the World Title. On the June 27 episode of Go Time, Andrews and Lee officially signed the contract for their match, Jimmy Rave tried to ambush Lee with a baseball bat, but Austin's brother Tristan Lee intervened. During the brawl, Andrews got a hold of the bat and struck Austin in the ankle, felling the champion and requiring him to receive medical attention.

Punked Out played host to the annual Eight-Man Throwdown tournament with the winner being granted a World Title shot at Summertime Showdown. Qualifying matches took place over the course of several weeks, with Eddie Crowe, Ronin Fox, Amazing Red, Terrence Bolton, Aaron Glover, Gary Kopp, Tristan Lee, and Gran Akuma qualifying. The eight men would be divided into two random teams and compete in an eight-man tag team match, with the winning team going on to face one another later in the night in a Four Way Dance.

The Pyro Twins and The Dark City Fight Club had been engaged in a tag team war since the DCFC arrived in MECCA in February. The Dark City Fight Club beat the MECCA veterans at Kick Start, but the Pyro Twins returned the favor at New Dawn. The battle was far from over, as things broke down again between the two teams on June 6, with both of them brawling in the backstage area. It broke down again the next week after a singles match between Jon Davis and Jay Crowe, and MECCA Authority Cynric decreed that there would be a rubber match between the two teams at Punked Out, and it would be under Texas Tornado rules.

Punked Out 2013

Background

Punked Out was broadcast live on pay-per-view by MECCA on June 29, 2013. It emanated from the BankUnited Center in Miami, Florida.

The feud between The Circle of Trust and The Near Future raged on in mid-2013. Eddie Crowe had failed to win the MECCA World Championship from Marcus Kavian at The MECCA Challenge IX, but Eddie maintained that he had never been pinned or submitted in that match. He kept his spot on the Contender Star as well, and to make sure he got a title rematch, Eddie and the Circle of Trust ambushed Near Future member Brandon Blade and dragged him out to the ring, threatening to end his career unless Kavian gave Eddie a title shot at Punked Out. Kavian accepted the challenge, and then the Near Future and Brian Kendrick hit the ring to help Blade.

Punked Out played host to the annual Eight-Man Throwdown tournament with the winner being granted a World Title shot at Summertime Showdown. Qualifying matches took place over the course of several weeks, with Jack Evans, Ronin Fox, Alex Shelley, Brandon Blade, Low Ki, Jay Crowe, Terrence Bolton, and Gran Akuma qualifying. The eight men would be divided into two random teams and compete in an eight-man tag team match, with the winning team going on to face one another later in the night in a Four Way Dance.

The Near Future weren't the only ones at odds with the Circle of Trust, as Brian Kendrick was upset with them for their attempted involvement in his and Marcus Kavian's World Title Match at New Dawn. When Kendrick had another chance to earn a title shot in a Supernova Spectacle on the May 29 episode of Go Time, he was eliminated after an attack from Gary Kopp. Kendrick helped the Near Future save Brandon Blade from the Circle of Trust on June 12, nailing Kopp in the face with a chair. Kopp retaliated by costing Kendrick his chance to qualify for the Eight-Man Throwdown later in the night. MECCA Authority Cynric quickly made a match between the two men for Punked Out.

Punked Out 2014

Background

Punked Out was broadcast live on pay-per-view by MECCA on June 28, 2014. It emanated from the Odeum Expo Center in Chicago, Illinois.

Drake Younger had come out of New Dawn as the new World Champion, but he already had an enemy in Marcus Kavian, who Younger had cost his spot on the Contender Star a couple of weeks prior. But Kavian won back his spot at New Dawn, making him eligible for the Supernova Spectacle on the June 4 episode of Go Time. Kavian won the match and a shot at the MECCA World Championship at Punked Out.

Punked Out played host to the annual Eight-Man Throwdown tournament with the winner being granted a World Title shot at Summertime Showdown. Qualifying matches took place over the course of several weeks, with Torea, Fenris, Eddie Crowe, Ryan Andrews, Aaron Glover, Jack Evans, Amazing Red, and Jimmy Rave qualifying. The eight men would be divided into two random teams and compete in an eight-man tag team match, with the winning team going on to face one another later in the night in a Four Way Dance.

At The MECCA Challenge X, Jessicka Havok ended the 426 day MECCA Ladies' World Championship reign of Melissa Flash. However, Havok needed the help of her old friend Allysin Kay to do it. They put Flash out of action for about six weeks, but when she returned, she was granted a rematch against Havok at Punked Out, which Havok did not take very well, laying waste to other competitors in the ladies' division. But Flash was determined to get her belt back, and didn't care if she had to fight both Havok and Kay to get it.

Punked Out 2015

Background

Punked Out was broadcast live on pay-per-view by MECCA on June 27, 2014. It emanated from the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio.

Alex Shelley had been campaigning for a month for a shot at the MECCA World Championship, ever since he was victorious in the MECCA Challenge match. He worked his way onto the Contender Star, but former champion Marcus Kavian and Brian Kendrick also had a legitimate claim to a title shot. MECCA Authority Cynric put the three men in a Triangle Match on the June 9 episode of Go Time, with the winner getting the next title shot at Punked Out. Shelley came out on top, and on the next week's show got into a scuffle with World Champion Torea, which resulted in Shelley absconding with the belt. Shelley later attacked Torea in the trainer's room, giving him a DDT onto the World Title. Torea would try to get payback on the next show in tag team action, but Shelley abandoned his partner, looking on and scouting as Torea got the submission win.

Punked Out played host to the annual Eight-Man Throwdown tournament with the winner being granted a World Title shot at Summertime Showdown. Qualifying matches took place over the course of several weeks, with Marcus Kavian, Fenris, Eddie Crowe, Brian Kendrick, Jay Crowe, Dusty Schneble, Terrence Bolton, and Gary Kopp qualifying. The eight men would be divided into two random teams and compete in an eight-man tag team match, with the winning team going on to face one another later in the night in a Four Way Dance.

At The MECCA Challenge XI, the team of Melissa Flash, Athena, and Ladies' Champion Serena Deeb succeeded in defeating The Midwest Militia, which resulted in the powerful group breaking up. However, as they celebrated on Go Time, Flash suddenly turned on both Deeb and Athena. Now that one of the ladies' division's biggest threats was gone, Flash's goal became to regain the MECCA Ladies' Championship, and she was prepared to do anything to get it. Athena was the first to feel Flash's wrath at New Dawn, while Deeb took care of some unfinished business with the remaining Midwest Militia members during the month of May. After that, Flash focused her attention on Deeb. She was granted her title shot, and the two were set to meet at Punked Out.
