APRIL 2nd, 2008
We have taken a break from all the touring the last few days and have done our own thing so May Lee could get her naps. She got to the point where she wasn't sleeping well through the night. Since we have stopped touring and stayed "home" for her naps, she has slept through the night the last two nights. We even got to sleep late today!!! I thought I wouldn't ever sleep late again! It has been nice not having to leave at 9:30 the past couple of mornings.

Breakfast View Each Morning

We got our notarized papers yesterday and tomorrow morning go for May Lee's required medical exam and to pick up her visa picture.

Monday we went back to the Pearl Market area and went to Liwan Plaza - six floors of shopping, and that is just half of it. One half is all jewelry, all floors. The other half is clothes, shoes, etc.

Liwan Plaza

Yesterday we went shopping again, but all within walking distance from the hotel. We have enjoyed finding things for May Lee for her birthdays for the next 18 years, so each year she'll have something from China - not the Wal-Mart "MADE IN CHINA."

Fruit by the Barrel

We had fun, too, finding out about the year we were born. Lou was born in the year of the rooster, Steve was in the year of the goat, Lynley and May Lee the year of the pig, Coleman the monkey...

... and Graham the year of the dog.

Year of the Dog

Today we took a cab down to the Art District. Once again we walked around for about 4 hours and never saw another Caucasian. They have some beautiful things. We saw a really nice school where uniformed kids were coming in through iron gates, but the guard wouldn't let us take any pictures.

We came back to meet another couple for dinner, whose baby was also from the same orphanage. The husband is originally from Lebanon (not TN) so he took us on another cab ride to Sinbad, a Turkish restaurant. I was a little timid, especially when we had to split cabs. I kissed Steve, in case I didn't see him again; it was about a 20 minute ride, so I was very glad when Steve, Lou and Coleman showed up. Their cabby dropped them off at the wrong restaurant and they had to walk to find it, thank goodness it wasn't too far away.

We ate on tables covered in plastic so you could just eat right off the table. Our table was full of food! They actually had napkins, too! Well, actually it was tissue, but we had a whole box to our table, and it was FREE! The food was great, we'll see how we feel tomorrow, because we were a little adventurous. The meat was some of the best we've had - the meat has not been very good here.

Other than Jennifer, the other wife at dinner, we were the only Americans anywhere around. This time there were many Arabic men, whom we have not seen anywhere else in China. Today I really felt what it might be like to be a minority. We've gotten used to the stares, somewhat, but I also know that I'll be coming home in a week. Half of our group is leaving tomorrow. We are jealous, we miss home, the sad thing is we call our hotel home.
