I Don't Want to Fall Asleep Tonight

I Know My Time is Drawing Near

I shall do every deed the white man tells.
I know my time is drawing near.
I plant these seeds, hoping to never fail, so that I may
Heal my heart with these joyful tears.

I say good-bye to family and friends.
I know my time is drawing near.
These sufferings I leave to make amends, so that I may
Heal my heart with these joyful tear.

Darkness gives me weakness that I must fight.
I know my time is drawing near.
Angels transform my weakness into might, so that I may
Heal my heart with these joyful tears.

And now I hear my heartbeat slowing down.
I know my time is drawing near.
My heart calls, "Stay strong with each beating sound" so that I may
Heal my heart with these joyful tears.

Angels came down, to God I shall return.
I know my time is drawing near.
Let memories that bless and burn prevail, so that I may
Heal my heart with these joyful tears.

Personal Note:  Back at high school, I learned about the slavery of African Americans.  I never knew that they wrote songs about God and their experiences as a slave.  I wrote this poem as homework for a literature class but I wish to add it in "Poems To Inspire."  It is only strong people who can create something beautiful even in turmoil so I acknowledge the faith of those Africans.  I hope they did find a better life after death.
