Piccolo is one of the more complex characters in Dragonball Z,mainly because he tends to keep to himself.He has very few friends and likes it that way-he is a very independant guy.Although you can generally catch Piccolo sharing "tender moments" with Gohan,he is very secretive and private.
Piccolo's general look
Although he is one of the strongest members of the Z team,Piccolo will often keep quiet and to himself-he'll only share his thoughts if he can see a point that everyone else has obviously missed,or if he has just thought of something that could seriously affect everyone else if it is something not thought about.Although the others won't notice,Piccolo observes everything that goes on and manages to piece it together in his mind so he can see the whole picture (very few other characters think like this).To cover up what he is doing or thinking,he will often swing the conversation in another direction or shout and yell to confuse or annoy everyone,at which point he'll make his move (example: to hide his plans to fuse with Kami,he shouted as loud as he could at Trunks,Krillin and Tien,blasted them,and when they were totally confused he took off).Other reasons he will swing conversations around are if he feels the talk is becoming too personal,if the others are getting off the subject,or if he doesn't want to discuss the subject (like-there are more important things to worry about).The only times he gets really vocal about his feelings is when Gohan is involved (he yelled pretty damn loud at Goku during the Cell Games when he thought Gohan was dead,didn't he?)
Piccolo helps a fallen teammate
Piccolo is a incredibly talented actor-he has shown his abilities twice.The first time,in the Garlic Jr Saga,he managed to convince everyone that he was infected with the poisonous Black Water Mist and proceeded to attack Gohan.The second time,Cell had drained his arm of all life and to buy time to save his life,he acted the stupid idiot who was ready to die,and also by doing this,he convinced Cell to tell his story (why do bad guys actually bother listening to these "last requests"?).Acting is the other way Piccolo keeps cover over his thoughts and feelings-this guy is able to feel the most profound grief and only utter a single gasp (like,when Dende was killed in front of him and he had to bear Nail's grief and his own anger).
Piccolo's rare smile
Although Piccolo has enormous potential on the battlefield,his own powers are almost always dwarfed by that of the Saiyans and the enemy,who,once accustomed to Piccolo,was able to defeat him.This doesn't mean that he gives up.He is very used to beating himself up because he thinks he hasn't done enough ("But did I do enough? I wasted time..A whole three years of training,and it all comes down to this.What if I didn't do enough?" Goku:"We all did our best,Piccolo." Piccolo:"But if only I'd worked harder..I could've gotten faster.I could've gotten stronger.Do we really have what it takes now?" Goku:"Why don't you ask me again this afternoon?") However,he is the only one permitted to beat himself up over mistakes-if anyone else does it,he gets very insulted and annoyed.He isn't too great at dealing with compliments either.
Piccolo shares a moment with Gohan
Although Piccolo himself hates to be touched or anyone else getting too close to him,he will jump into battles he know he has no hope of winning,if for nothing else than to buy time for his friends to survive.He has two major deaths-both of these were caused by him sacrificing himself for the "greater good".Although Piccolo mostly thinks battle plans and strategies out carefully,he almost always misses the easy way out and as a result makes things harder for himself.He is very good at dealing with any major crisises that turn up,and is often the first to spot a problem or where he thinks there will be a problem,giving him the label of "paranoid" to the others.
