Trunks grew up in a world where the Z fighters had been destroyed by the androids,17 and 18 (16 didn't exist in this world).The only surviving member was Gohan,who had managed to achieve Super Saiyan when he found Piccolo and Krillin's bodies on the battlefield.Because of Piccolo's death,Trunks also grew up in a place where the Dragonballs were almost unheard of,and Earth no longer had a Guardian (Popo's fate is unknown).
Trunks saves himself
Trunks was raised alone by Bulma and trained by Mirai Gohan.The thing Trunks most wants to see is his world free of the Android's threat-"Mother said the Androids were so terrible she wished there was a world without them.But,I am hoping to find their weaknesses by watching Goku fight them." Mirai Gohan and Trunks became very close,although much to Trunks' frustratration he could never attain Super Saiya-jin.This is especially hits hard after they met up with the Androids and Gohan lost his arm.The last existing senzu was given to Trunks during this fight.The next time Gohan finds the Androids,he dies,and Trunks finds his body which allowed him to become Super Saiyan.
Super Saiyan Trunks
Generally,Trunks is very sentimental and attached to the Z fighters,particularly Vegeta,who died when he was a baby,and the child Gohan.Not having grown up being part of the team or even facing them in conflict,he is always surprised by at least one member.
Trunks hardly ever gets mad,but his potential surpasses that of Vegeta in the Cell Saga (much to Vegeta's frustration).He's got his mother's brain and his father's strength,which makes up a great combination.Trunks tries his best not to underestimate anything after he finds the past has been changed by him travelling back (the appearance of Androids 16,19 and 20,the strength or 16,17 and 18,and the appearance of Cell).He spends most of his time as backup for Vegeta,but he can also at times step back to take a good look at everything around him and unlike his father,he can tell when there is a real threat.

One of the most obvious facts about Trunks is his appreciation of his father,no matter what Vegeta does,and the way he loves to see what he has preserved by saving Goku's life.He is also a true warrior,spending the days leading up to the Cell Games by planning strategies with Piccolo or training in the Room of Spirit and Time.After the Cell Games,Trunks returns to his world and kills Cell and the androids.Mirai Trunks is therefore hailed as the saviour of two worlds-the present and the future.
Note: because of Trunks,the timeline of DBZ was split three seperate ways.In the first,Trunks returned from the past the first time and defeated the androids,but was then defeated by Cell.This world now has no Special Forces.The second timeline,was where Trunks survived the Cell Games,and returned home to defeat Cell and the androids.The third one is the main timeline,which allowed the preservation of characters such as Goku,Vegeta and Piccolo,and the introduction of Goten.
