Computers differ greatly in size, and you will encounter many different types of computers, as described in this section of the lesson.

Microcomputers (Personal Computers):

These are currently the most widely used type of computer today.  Most homes and businesses have personal computers, also called PCs or microcomputers.

Some models sit on your desktop and are horizontal, while other models sit on the floor and are upright or vertical.  These desktop- sized models are not easily portable.  They run general-purpose software.

Workstations:

A workstation is a more powerful type of desktop computer. These computers are a step up from a microcomputer (PC), but are not quite as powerful as a minicomputer.  They are generally used by professionals whose jobs require a lot of computations and calculations, such as engineers and scientists.
