   Anata

The most basic way to say 'you'. It is polite and can be used by most everyone. Remember, the word 'you' is not required in every sentence. For the Japanese, if I am talking to you and/or about you, I don't need to keep saying 'you', we already know that. Therefore, use of saying 'you' adds a little emphesis to what is said. BTW, "anata" is also sometimes shortened to "anta."

   Kimi

Used by men when speaking to youths or close friends.

   Omae

This is mostly used as a familiar word (between friends) in southern Japan. If used to someone who is not a friend, it is degrading.

   Kisama

A very offensive word in all uses. This is used for people you hate and despise, or think they are low scum. Often leads to fights.

   Watashi

This is the normal standard for 'I'. Like 'anata' above, it may be used by nearly any one and is polite.

   Atashi

This is the feminine version of above. Used mostly by women, it is also polite.

   Boku

The men's way to say 'I' or 'me'. It is also used by boys. This form is familiar, not polite, i.e. should only be used amoungst friends. Women sometimes use this word, but it is very unfeminine and crass.

   Ore

This goes along with 'omae', used in the south japan. It is a version of 'I' that also in not very polite.
