The Christmas Eve Visit

The pine trees bowed, branches heavy with snow,
Ice crystals hung on the air,
Not a creature was stirring at the mountain ranch,
All the guests, asleep without care.
There were sugarplums dancing and the faint sound of sleigh bells,
And to the north, one star bright.
There was quiet and calm and peace,
And a reverence in the still of the night.
Juniper and holly graced the garland on the mantel,
Woolen caps and mittens dangled from shaker hooks,
Vanilla and spice filtered warmly through the room,
Bayberry candles burned atop the barrister of books.
The fire crackled at the hearth as I climbed out of bed
And cleared the frost from the windowpane,
Just enough to peer out at the blanket of snow
That had fallen and covered the lane.
The drive was awash with light from the porch,
And trampled with the prints of several tiny hooves
That had pranced and danced outside the cabin…
At the end of the road in the woods.
