Lester’s Rocking Horse

That Christmas Eve, I was 6 years old (I think)
I was awakened by a commotion downstairs,
I slipped from my bed to peek down thru the register,
And thought I had discovered the Christmas answer
to my cowgirl prayers.
The front door stood wide open, snow swirling thru,
And I could see past to the driveway outside
Where the trunk of the car yawned open, empty,
And Dad was dragging a blanket-covered "something" inside.
As I watched in awe, the blanket fell to the floor
To reveal a beautiful ebony and ivory rocking horse.
His splendid wooden legs stood astride twin scarlet rockers,
And his bridle sparkled with diamonds (rhinestones of course!)
The glow of the tree lights danced around the room,
And I felt like I was suddenly inside the perfect
cowboy Christmas card…
I could picture myself sitting in that fine western saddle
With its woolen saddle blanket and leather girth guards.
I would hold tight to his airbrushed salt and pepper mane,
And ride like the wind upon that sturdy pine steed,
My whoops and hollers would fall deaf on his black lacquered ears
As we galloped over rattlesnakes, prairie dogs, and tumbleweeds.
But alas when Christmas morning finally dawned,
The name emblazoned on that saddle was my brother’s,
And I’ll never forgive him for shooting down my dream
With his Fisher Price bow and suction-cup arrows!
