Snowman

I was homeward bound for the holidays,
And had parked my car on the outer edge of town,
So I could walk the last chilly mile or so
As weightless white snowflakes drifted down.
Deep in the woods, where the air smelled of pine,
And holly boughs sagged, tipped with frost,
I came upon a tall, snowy figure with a bowed crooked smile,
And hickory twig arms that stuck out and criss-crossed.
A silken top hat sat atop a frozen round face
That glinted with cool wonder in the night.
And eyes black as coal, and as brilliant,
Shined like a child’s at Christmas morning’s first light.
The winter moon shone down thru the trees,
Casting a misty, silvery blue on the night,
And the crest of the new fallen snow around him,
Sparkled like a thousand diamonds glistening bright.
There was an exhilaration and joy indicative of youth
In the several small boot prints that were stomped all about,
And the buttons that adorned his snowy coat front
Were fastened only halfway, (a child’s-reach) up.
And just for a moment, a fleeting blink of an eye,
I swear I saw one corner of his mouth crinkle
With a wobbly grin, and a sly little wink,
And a mischievous jolly twinkle.
His presence there, both melted and filled my heart
With the Christmas spirit that burned from within…
It warmed and welled in his snowbound soul,
And deepened the dimple on his frosty chin.
