Christmas 2005

I thought that this Christmas I’d be a Scrooge,
Scorn and disregard would prevail.
I would not send out one single Christmas card,
Nor fret over décor or detail.
I would purchase my ticket to “fun-in-the-sun”
Long before Wal-Mart put up its Christmas display,
And I would be guiltlessly sipping a piña colada
On Waikiki beach on Christmas day.
So the first week of December, when the temperature dropped,
And I brushed past the blue-vested greeter,
(On my way to purchase an insulated cover
To winterize the hot water heater…)
I was attempting to avoid the “seasonal” aisle,
And the Singing Santa (who was motion-activated of course)
But the oversized, lighted, outdoor snow globe caught my eye,
And as if by gravitational force…
I was drawn to the scene with its life-sized snowman
In the midst of a fan-blown “snowfall”
And a woodland Santa, standing next to a tree,
Peering thru the globe’s see-through vinyl wall.
As I stood surrounded by colorfully-painted toy soldiers,
Holographic angels and sugarplum fairies,
Acrylic icicles and spray-on-snow for windows,
And fake Christmas trees frosted with white juniper berries…
The cold and indifference seemed to melt away,
And the Christmas spirit found its way back into my heart
Thru the seven watt smile of an inflatable snowman,
Right there in the middle of Wal-Mart!
