Toning Down the "Power Races"

Ok, so I bought the FR campaign setting and was very disappointed to find out that deep gnomes were ECL +3 and thus considered more powerful than drow and now basically off limits to starting characters. So, here's my thoughts on how to make them and the other FR power races ECL + 0:

Unless otherwise noted, all d20 content on this page is Open Gaming Content as partains to the d20 Open Game License

Svirfneblin (Deep Gnomes) of the ECL +0 fashion

  • Remove Spell Resistence
  • Remove Nondetection
  • Limit the spell abilities to 1 use total per day. i.e., the PC can cast either change self, blindness, or blur 1/day
  • You could also add Light Sensitivity or Light Blindness (FR Campaign Setting pg 14)

Likewise, the other races with an ECL can be trimmed down to meet a more playable level. Further, if they really want or need one of the abilities, make them purchase each as a feat, and each additional spell ability or spell ability per day as a feat.

Drow of the ECL +0 fashion

  • Remove Spell Resistence
  • Limit the spell abilities to 1 use total per day

Duergar (Gray Dwarves) of the ECL +0 fashion

  • Limit the spell abilities to 1 use total per day, and make them unusable until 3rd level
  • Remove the immunity to illusions and abnormal poisons. Instead, give them a +2 to save vs. these situations

Aasimar of the ECL +0 fashion

  • Remove Acid, Cold, and Electricity Resistence
  • Replace Dark Vision with Low-Light Vision

Genasi of the ECL +0 fashion

  • Remove the +1 racial bonus to saving throws
  • Remove Breathless and any associated immunities

Tiefling of the ECL +0 fashion

  • Remove Cold, Fire, and Electricity Resistence
  • Limit the Darkness spell like ability to a maximum 5th level
