Coach Jerry Lucas’ Collins team denied Highlands’ quest for a seventh consecutive title as they upended the Bluebirds by a score of 37-34.  Collins improves to 13-2 while Coach Dale Mueller’s Highlands team finished 13-2.  Collins led 23-14 after three quarters but Highlands rallied and took a 34-30 lead on a 1 yard run by Zach Harris but the two point conversion attempt failed with 2:33 left on the clock.  Collins drove to the Highlands 12 yard line but on fourth down at the 12 yard line Collins QB Lawson Page had to sit out a play because his helmet had come off on the previous play.  However Browning Becherer came into the game and threw a 12 yard touchdown pass to Nathan Sames with 7 seconds remaining on the clock.  Blanton Creque kicked the extra point and Collins held on to avenge their 47-0 loss to Highlands in last year’s championship game.

Collins recorded 25 first downs and 458 yards of total offense.  They were penalized twice for 21 yards.  Highlands recorded 23 first downs and 480 yards of total offense.  The Bluebirds were penalized eight times for 73 yards and lost two fumbles.

Ryan Watkins led Collins’ ground game with 121 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.  Lawson Page carried the ball 15 times for 108 yards.  Deandre Farris recorded 39 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.  Lawson Page completed 15 of 23 passes for 178 yards and one touchdown.  Browning Becherer completed his only pass for a 12 yard touchdown pass.  Nathan Sames caught six passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns.  Deandre Farris added six receptions for 69 yards.  Masai Whyte led the defense with 13 solo and three assisted tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totaling three yards.  Elijah Jones added five solo tackles.  Leland Caldwell recorded four solo tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totaling seven yards.

Zach Harris led Highlands’ ground game with 103 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries.  Drew Houliston completed 19 of 35 passes for 367 yards and two touchdowns.  Evan Allen caught four passes for 78 yards and a touchdown.  Alex Veneman added four receptions for 73 yards and a touchdown.  Jenson Feggins caught three passes for 57 yards.  Joey Cochran led the defense with11 solo tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totaling 15 yards.  T. Wrobleski added six solo and two assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a three yard loss.  Brad Murray recorded six solo and one assisted tackles.

Belfry utilized their brand of smash-mouth football to defeat Wayne County 3-0 in a game played in frigid temperatures and rain.  Belfry improved to 14-1 and a combination of their defense and the weather slowed down Wayne County’s high powered offense as the Cardinals suffered their first loss and fell to 14-1 for the season.  This was Coach Philip Haywood’s third championship at Belfry and a very satisfying victory as they had lost in the finals to Central the last three years in the finals.  Coach Shawn Thompson led Wayne County to their first appearance in a state final.  Wayne County had a scoring opportunity late in the first half when they reached the Belfry 5 yard line.  Tyler Guffey’s fourth down pass was incomplete and the score was scoreless at halftime.  Austin Woolum kicked a 35 yard field goal with 5:22 remaining in the third quarter and Belfry’s defense made the score hold up for the victory.  Belfry recorded 12 first downs and 244 yards of total offense.  The Pirates were penalized four times for 36 yards and lost two fumbles.  Wayne County recorded 10 first downs and 208 yards of total offense.  The Cardinals were not penalized and had two passes intercepted.

Austin Hatfield led Belfry’s ground game with 114 yards on 21 carries.  Justin Johnson carried the ball 10 times for 57 yards.  Sani Warren added 41 yards on seven carries.  Sani Warren completed two of four passes for nine yards.  Trenity Carr caught one pass for nine yards.  Hayden Hatfield led the defense with four solo and one assisted tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totaling seven yards.  Keaton Taylor added four solo tackles and intercepted a pass.  T. Dotson recorded three solo and two assisted tackles.

Tyler Guffey led Wayne County’s ground game with 24 yards on nine carries.  Tyler Guffey completed 12 of 30 passes for 169 yards with two interceptions.  Jason Perkins caught five passes for 103 yards.  Logan Gardner added four receptions for 25 yards.  Alan Brown led the defense with 13 solo and two assisted tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totaling nine yards.  Ryan Corder added seven solo and three assisted tackles with 1.5 of his tackles resulting in losses totaling six yards.  Joseph Pierce recorded five solo and four assisted tackles.
