Madison Central vs. Rockcastle County (Girls)

Madison Central coach Robert Cooksey started the following lineup: 5-10 Sr. Lindsey Johns, 5-10 Sr. Charity Mack, 6-0 Sr. Mallie Cornett, 5-4 Jr. Bailee Vanover, and 5-7 Sr. Kasi Schneid.  Rockcastle County coach Chrysti Noble countered with 5-7 Sr. Madelym Bullen, 5-4 Sr. Mahala Saylor, 6-0 Fr. Mackenzie Himes, 5-1 Sr. Jayna Albright, and 5-5 Sr. Hope Kelley.

 

Madison Central led 22-14 in the second quarter but Rockcastle County rallied to earn a 59-55 double overtime victory over the visitors tonight.  The score was tied 12 times and there were 13 lead changes tonight.  Rockcastle County held s 42-40 lead late in regulation but Kasi Schneid scored on a steal and layup in the closing minute to knot the score and force overtime.  Madison Central held a 47-45 lead in overtime but Madelyn Bullen hit a field goal to tie the score with 28 seconds remaining in the first overtime.  The score was tied 55-55 in the second overtime until Mackenzie Himes scored on a layup with 16 seconds remaining on the clock to give Rockcastle County a 57-55 lead.  Hope Kelley hit two late free throws to ensure the 59-55 victory for the Lady Rockets.

 

Rockcastle County shot 39.3% from the field including five of 12 from the three point line.  The Lady Rockets connected on 10 of 12 free throws, pulled down 32 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 15 Madison Central turnovers.  Madison Central shot 48.9% from the field including three of 13 from beyond the arc.  The Indians connected on eight of 15 free throws, pulled down 28 rebounds, and scored 19 points off 12 Rockcastle County turnovers.

 

Hope Kelley led Rockcastle County with 18 points including four three point baskets, three rebounds, four assists, and three steals, (Kelley kept Rockcastle County in the game at various stages on the contest with her long range bombing).  Madelyn Bullen added 17 points and managed to find a seam in the Indians’ defense for her 10-15 foot jump shot throughout the game.  Mackenzie Himes added 10 points and four rebounds and was very effective especially early in the game before getting into foul problems.  Mahala Saylor was unable to find the range from the field tonight but did record six points including a key three point basket, five rebounds, and five assists.  Jayna Albright dished out six assists.

 

Mallie Cornett had a great game tonight with 22 points on eight of 11 field goals, and six of six free throws, 11 rebounds, nine blocked shots, and three steals.  One of Cornett’s blocked shots was on a “hustle” play where she raced from her center position on defense to block a jump shot deep in the corner.  Bailee Vanover added 13 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals.  Kasi Schneid recorded 10 points, six rebounds, two assists, and three steals.  Lindsey Johns chipped in with nine points on three three point baskets.  Charity Mack pulled down five rebounds and dished out five assists.
