The Way Of Cain & The World

The book of Genesis is the book of beginnings. The story of Cain and his children gives us a glimpse into the inner workings of the world. If you understand Cain, you will have a better understanding of our present world. Our world is the world he built. If you ignore this beginning, you will miss one of the Bible's greatest lessons on life and economics. (All references are from the RSV.)

Have you ever wondered why the Bible mentioned Cain and listed his descendants (Genesis 4:17-24)? If the entire purpose was to show how Cain's children deteriorated morally, a sentence would have sufficed. The Bible could easily have said, “And Cain's children grew worse, with each generation more wicked than the last.”

This short section in the Bible was given to show more than just what happens to men without God. It was written to teach us what men naturally do without him. Not only does this teach us about ourselves, but it also reveals the inner workings of our present world.

The Bible begins in Genesis with God creating the world because “beginnings” are important. If this simple truth at the outset is not recognized, almost everything after it will also be wrong. The same applies to the study of Cain. He is the beginning of the world after the fall. Understanding Cain allows us to understand our present world.
