Was The Bible Corrupted?

Muslims say the Bible was corrupted.1 The evidence for this, they claim can be seen in the Bible’s account of Abraham sending Hagar and Ishmael away. They claim the inconsistencies in the story show that it is a fake. This is one reason why they do not read it.

There are three answers to these claims.

  1. Jesus makes the corruption of the Bible highly unlikely.
  2. There are no inconsistencies in the story of Hagar and Ishmael being sent away.
  3. The Qur’an itself supports the wholeness of the Bible.

1. Jesus Ensures The Bible’s Integrity

The Qur’an speaks very highly of Jesus. It specifically says Jesus was given the Taurat (the Law), the Injeel (?), and the Gospel. Of greater importance, he had the Holy Spirit.

If the Bible was corrupted, either it was corrupted before Jesus, or after his coming. If it was corrupted before Jesus, why did he not correct it for his disciples? Afterall, he received the Taurat (the Law) from God. And if it was “beyond correction” why did he not tell his disciples to ignore it? Instead, Jesus confirmed the Bible saying he came to fulfill it (Matthew 5:17-20). With the Holy Spirit, he could not have been fooled. Because of Jesus, the Bible could not have been corrupted before he came.

If the Bible was corrupted by the Jews after Jesus, why did the Christians not protest this change in scripture? And if it was the Christians corrupting the Bible, why did the Jews not protest? And if the Jews and Christians got together to change the Bible, why is there no record of this event?

The fact is, even the Qur’an makes no mention of changes in the Bible. All the Qur’an says is that the Jews and Christians didn’t obey what was written in their own scripture. It would be unreasonable for the Qur’an to say the Jews and Christians were not following their “corrupt” scriptures.

Since the Bible could not have been corrupted before or after Jesus, this Muslim claim is not true.
