I love the feeling of sanctity that round gardens seem to have. Hurricane Isabel cleared out a nice sunny spot perfect for a circular garden so we are taking advantage and filling it with lots of roses around a circular lawn. The perimeter is planted in climbing roses trained on 4x4 posts. The posts are topped with birdhouses. We did this at Casa Rosa and I really liked the cottage charm of it. There is a row of hollies and Moonlight junipers along the east side of the garden. The roses are putting on some size and enclosing the garden to give a more intimate feeling. We have added a walk, which I have called the Morning Garden, along the southern boundary. This adds another layer and makes the larger roses in the back accessible from the other side. I am thinking of adding a similar walk along the northern bounday, especially since I need to limb up the low hanging tree branches on that side. In hindsight, I wish I had allowed room for a walk around the entire circumference of the circle so that the back row of roses could be reached for smelling, cutting, and care.
