Chapter 33

Chris begins to close the door -- Kevin stops the door with his foot. ''Chris -- I know I'm probably the last person in the world you want to see.''

''Get out of my house, Kevin.'' Chris tells him.

''If you'll just give me a chance --''

''To what? Try and kill me again?'' Chris asks.

''I'm sorry. I am really, truly sorry for what I did.'' Kevin tells him sincerely. ''Jessie isn't speaking to me -- I hope you know that.''

''Good for Jessie.'' Chris says.

''I've lost my whole family, Chris -- and I don't know how I can get them back. I think you -- you're the only one who can help me.''

''Well, then you're out of luck.'' Chris says, shutting the door. Kevin shoves his way inside.

''Chris, please, I just want a chance to --'' Kevin begins, grabbing Chris as he walks through the living room.

''Hey, get your hands off of me, you psycho!'' Chris shouts, shoving Kevin away, at the very moment that Patrick walks in the door. Chris' hand is still bleeding considerably, and as Chris shoves Kevin, some of the blood lands on Kevin's shirt. Patrick races in the door.

''What are you doing to my brother!'' Patrick shouts in anger. He grabs Kevin by the collar and shoves him against the wall. ''I told you to stay away from me and Chris!'' Patrick starts to choke Kevin.

''Patrick, let him go! He didn't do anything to me.'' Chris tells him. Patrick looks at Kevin, gasping for breath, and lets him go. Kevin falls to the floor, trying to catch his breath. Patrick walks over to Chris.

''You're hurt.'' he says, looking at Chris' hand. ''Did he do this?''

''No, I -- I did it myself.'' Chris admits, somewhat embarrassed. ''Cutting the tomatoes.''

''I told you that knife was too big.'' Patrick says.

''Yeah, yeah, spare me the lecture.'' Chris remarks, as Patrick looks at the wound.

''This needs stitches.'' he says, as Chris looks the cut over himself and sighs.

''Yeah, looks like it.'' Chris replies.

''Come on, I'll take you to the hospital.'' Patrick says. Then they both look over at Kevin, who is now standing up. ''Are you okay?'' Patrick asks.

''Fine.'' Kevin replies.

''Good -- then leave. And don't come back.'' Patrick tells him.

''Chris, please -- I'm not asking for us to be friends or anything. I just -- I want my family back. And you're the only one that can help make that happen.'' Kevin begs.

''You heard my brother -- get out.'' Chris says. Kevin leaves, with a distraught look on his face.

''Are you sure?'' Jessie asks Kim.

''No, I'm not sure -- but I'm late. And I haven't been with anyone else since -- since him.'' Kim tells her.

''Well, you should take a test. Come on, we can go right now and draw blood, and see if --''

''No, that's -- not necessary.''

''You don't want to know?'' Jessie asks.

''Of course I do, I just -- I have appointment tomorrow. I'll find out then.'' Kim tells her.

''Oh -- okay. So what are you gonna do, if -- I mean if you are pregnant.''

''I don't know. I'll make that decision if and when I need to, I guess.'' Jessie's pager goes off.

''Well, they need me in the ER. I'll see you later -- good luck tomorrow.'' Jessie says, and leaves.

''Oh, I don't need luck, Jessie. Everything is working out just like I planned it.'' Kim says to herself after Jessie leaves, grinning wickedly.

''I suppose you're -- surprised to see me.'' Victor says to Greg, sitting down in the chair next to his bed. Greg just looks up at him, not saying a word. ''I -- I brought you something. It's a picture -- this was taken when you were -- well, I think you can see for yourself.'' Victor sets the picture down on the table next to the bed. It's an old photo of Victor, much younger, with a woman, and they are holding a baby. ''We were so happy when you were born, Marcia and I. Your mother -- you look quite a bit like her, you know. We wanted to start over -- with you and the boys. I had made arrangements -- new identities for all of us. But then -- well, you know what happened then.'' Greg still doesn't say anything. ''Well, I -- I just wanted you to have this. And I wanted you to know that -- you WERE wanted, son. And I wish things could have been very different. For all of us.'' Victor gets up and leaves. Greg reaches over and takes the picture in his hand and looks at it, a tear streaming down his face . . . . . .

''Lucy, what are you talking about?'' Mac asks. ''Why did Kevin leave?''

''I -- I can't tell you.'' Lucy says.

''Is he in trouble?'' Mac asks.

''I don't know.'' Lucy replies. ''I just want my Doc back.'' Lucy says, and she starts to cry. Mac reaches out to hug her.

''Lucy, whatever it is -- you know you can tell me.'' Mac says.

''I -- I just --'' Lucy begins, as the front door opens, and Kevin walks in. ''Doc?'' Lucy says, looking up. ''Oh Doc, I'm so sorry! I never should have said those things, and --'' Lucy runs to Kevin, and he wraps her in his arms.

''It's okay Lucy. You didn't do anything wrong.'' Kevin tells her.

''Hey mate. Lucy was starting to worry me for a minute there.'' Mac says.

''We had a little bit of a disagreement. But we'll be okay.'' Kevin says.

''Hey, I've got a case I need some help on. If you could stop by the station --'' Mac begins.

''I can't Mac, I'm sorry. Why don't you call my secretary, and tell them to set you up with one of my staff members. I have several that are experts on criminal psyches.'' Kevin says.

''You know I'd rather work with you.'' Mac tells him.

''I know, but -- Mac, I'm taking a leave of absence from the job. After everything that's happened the last year, I -- I'm just now realizing that I need time to deal with what's been going on before I can be of any help to anyone else. I'm sorry.'' Kevin tells him.

''It's okay, mate -- I understand. And if you ever need to talk or anything --'' Mac begins.

''You'll be the first one I call. Thanks.'' Kevin says.

''Anytime.'' Mac tells him, and leaves.

''Lucy, I'm so sorry for walking out on you like that. I just -- didn't know what else to do.'' Kevin tells her.

''And I'm sorry for -- I was just so gosh darned mad at you, and --'' Lucy begins.

''I know -- I know.'' Kevin says, taking her in his arms. ''Let's go away somewhere -- you, me, the twins -- just somewhere we can all be alone. You name the place.''

''I -- I just opened my new offices, and --''

''And Don can handle anything that needs to be done. Please, Lucy -- we need to do this. For us -- for the twins.'' Lucy looks up at him.

''Okay. Okay, we can go away together. I'll make the arrangements.''

''Good. I love you, Lucy Coe Collins -- and I intend to spend every minute of this time we have together showing you just how much.'' Kevin says, and pulls Lucy into an intense kiss.

''Hey, are you going for some kind of record of most ER visits in one week?'' Jessie asks as she enters the cubicle where Chris is sitting. His hand has just been stitched up. Jessie sits down on the bed with him and gives him a kiss. ''Haven't I told you before not to use that knife for cutting vegetables?''

''I don't need the lecture, I already heard it from Patrick, alright?'' Chris says. ''And as for dinner, I think we're ordering pizza for the main course.''

''Make sure you get me one with pineapple.''

''I don't know how you can eat that, it's disgusting.'' Chris comments, then changes the subject. ''Kevin came over.'' Jessie looks stunned.

''What did he want?''

''To -- to apologize, I guess.''

''What did you say?''

''I don't know, Jess. I can't say I forgive the guy, but -- honey, I know this is tearing you up inside. I just don't know what to do.''

''You know if -- if I have to choose between you and Kevin -- I choose you.'' Jessie tells him. Chris begins to recall Jessie leaving for Europe, and his reaction to her going.

''I don't EVER want you to have to choose between me and your family, Jess. And maybe, I -- it's not like Kevin meant to kill me or anything.''

''No, he didn't.'' Jessie says.

''I guess I can -- try to get along with him. For you.''

''You'd have never done this three months ago.''

''Yeah, well a lot can change in three months. And you make it easy -- because I love you.'' Chris says, giving Jessie a kiss on the lips. ''And I don't ever want to be the reason why you're hurting. Kevin is your family, and you love him -- and I have to accept that.''

''Why the sudden change?''

''We all make mistakes that we regret, Jess -- and I guess we all deserve a second chance.'' Chris says, thinking about his night with Kim with deep regret.

August 5, 2001 -- the doorbell at the Lighthouse rings. Kevin answers it. ''Jessie -- please, come in. I'm glad you called.''

''I've been wanting to talk to you for a few days now, but -- well, I've kind of been putting it off.''

''I understand.'' Kevin tells her.

''How is Lucy?''

''Fine. We're -- we're working things out.''

''Good.''

''How is Chris?'' Kevin asks.

''He's fine. Kevin, he's -- he's willing to -- let this go. For me.''

''Oh.'' Kevin says.

''You look surprised.''

''It's just that -- well he didn't seem too forgiving last time I saw him.''

''Yeah, well he changed his mind. You still don't approve of him, do you?''

''I don't think I'll ever approve of him, Jessie. But you're right -- it's your life. And if he makes you happy -- I guess that's all that matters.''

''He does, Kevin. Just like you and Lucy.''

''Okay, then. So we're -- friends again?'' Kevin asks.

''Of course we are.'' Jessie says, giving Kevin a hug.

''Lucy and I are -- going away for awhile. We just need to get out of town with the kids, and just not think about Port Charles or Ryan or Greg Cooper or -- any of that.''

''How long will you be gone?'' Jessie asks.

''I don't know -- a month, maybe. Two at the most. We just need this time alone.''

''I don't blame you. Chris and I are going on vacation later this month -- we want to get away as well.''

''Well, I -- hope you have a good time.'' Kevin tells her.

''You too -- I'll see you when you get back. Take care.'' Jessie says, and leaves.

''So, did you find out?'' Jessie asks Kim, coming up behind her in the hall.

''Find out what?'' Kim says.

''You know what -- are you --''

''Shhh, I don't want anyone to know.'' Kim says, as they duck into a corner.

''Well?'' Jessie says.

''I'm pregnant.'' Kim sighs.

''Oh, Kim -- what are you gonna do?''

''I don't know.''

''Have you told the father?''

''No, I -- he and his girlfriend just got engaged, Jessie. He loves her, not me.''

''But he's still the father -- he has rights.''

''I know -- I just need some time. I don't know what I'm gonna do.''

''Well, if you need anything, you just ask, okay?''

''I will -- thanks Jess.'' Kim says, and Jessie leaves. ''I'll remember that.'' she says, grinning.

Kim enters the lab, and starts looking through the files. Patrick enters a few minutes later. ''What are you doing?'' he asks.

''I was just -- looking for some test results that Dr. Boardman is waiting on.''

''I just took them to him fifteen minutes ago. Now what are you really doing in here?'' Patrick asks, just as the door to the lab opens.

''I --'' Kim begins, stammering.

''You know, it's been driving me crazy -- have we ever met before?''

''I -- I don't think so.'' Kim says, clearly lying.

''Dr. Reardon, there was bus accident on the highway, they're gonna be swamped in the ER, we need every staff member in there, stat.'' a nurse says, poking her head in the door. ''You too.'' she says to Kim.

''Fine, I'll be right there.'' Patrick says. ''I'll deal with you later.'' Patrick says, and leaves. Kim sighs in relief, then quickly goes back to looking through the files.

''Here it is.'' she says to herself, picking up her own chart. She opens it up, and looks at one particular entry. She picks up a pen, and changes something on the chart. ''There -- perfect.'' she says, putting the chart down. ''You were always too smart for your own good, Dr. Reardon. I hope I don't have to deal with you as well.'' she says to herself, then leaves the lab.

August 15, 2001 . . . Jessie and Chris are snuggled up on the couch in the on call room relaxing after a busy morning in the OR.

''You know, I've been thinking about the weeks vacation we're taking in a few days.'' Jessie says.

''Why do I get the feeling that you're gonna try and con me into something that I won't be the slightest bit interested in doing?'' Chris asks.

''Oh, I don't know about that -- you just might be interested in this.'' Jessie replies.

''Look, no more alternative nightclub outings -- I still haven't recovered from the last one. Now we agreed to just spend the week taking a drive along the east coast, going to the beaches and everything -- that's what we're doing.''

''But Chris, I have something else in mind -- don't you even want to hear what it is?'' Jessie asks, practically begging.

Chris sighs. ''You're impossible, you know that. OK -- what do you have in mind?''

''Let's go to Vegas and get married.'' Jessie says, as she sits up and faces him.

Chris just laughs. ''See, this is why I didn't want hear it -- are you crazy? Your family would flip!''

''Well, who says they have to know about it?'' Jessie asks.

''What, we're gonna keep our marriage a secret from them? Jessie -- everyone here still can't believe that we're engaged. And I'm sure that they all want the opportunity to stand up and object when we finally do exchange vows. Why should we deprive them of their fun?''

''That's exactly why we should get married now. Chris I love you so much. I want to be your wife -- and I'm not gonna change my mind about that, not ever. I want to marry you now -- without any interference from anyone else. Come on -- when my dad proposed to my mom, they got married within a week!''

Chris gets up and walks over to his locker. ''And how do you think everyone will react to this bombshell? Jessie, they couldn't care less about me, but I know that a lot of people will be upset if you take off and marry me without telling them.''

''Chris, when you asked me to marry you, did you mean it or not?'' Jessie asks.

Chris walks over to Jessie and wraps his arms around her. ''Of course I meant it Jess -- that rock you're wearing is worth a bundle!''

''It always comes down to dollars and cents for you, doesn't it? How romantic.'' Jessie replies, and starts to walk away from him.

Chris stops her. ''Jessie -- I want to do this right. I don't want anyone to think that I ran off and married you because I think it wouldn't happen any other way. Now if you want to set a date right now, go ahead. You just tell me the time and the place and I'll be there. But let's not do this behind everyone's back, okay? People hate me enough around here as it is.''

''Chris -- that's why they wouldn't have to know. Here's what I think -- we go and get married next week in Vegas, and then spend the rest of the week out on the west coast. We can go to San Francisco -- I can show you around where I used to live. And then we can have another wedding here, for everyone else -- hey, we can do it on Valentine's day. I mean, we're kinda required to get each other stuff on that day anyway -- so it won't *technically* have to be our anniversary cause we'd celebrate that day anyway. And nobody ever has to know what our *real* wedding date is -- that'll be just for us to know.''

Chris just stares at her. ''Jessie, are you pregnant?'' he asks her pointedly.

''What?! Chris, why would you ask me that?''

''Well, from where I stand, the only reasons I can think of for you to want to do this is either A) you're pregnant, or B) you're nuts. And I prefer to think that I'm marrying a sane woman.''

Jessie puts her arms around Chris and kisses him. ''Chris, I'm not pregnant. If I were, you'd be the first to know, I promise. And as I recall, you've *always* thought that I was nuts! What makes this idea any different? You know what I think it is -- I think you're starting to get a little bit commitment-phobic here! Sure, the engagement is nice -- but it's not written in stone until we exchange vows. Just how long of an engagement did you intend to have here, anyway?''

''Well -- how long of one did you want?'' Chris asks.

''Five more days.'' Jessie says emphatically. ''Chris, come on -- I want to be your wife as soon as possible.''

''Jessie, is it your goal in life to drive me crazy? Because you're doing a *very* good job here.''

''We could have two weddings -- and that way, when the second one rolls along, if anyone tries to object, we can just look at them, smile and say 'Too bad!' And we'd get two honeymoons -- that would be fun.'' she says, wearing a devilish grin.

''Why am I even trying to argue with you here? I can't win -- I never win. You always manage to convince me to do whatever it is that you want. Are you drugging my food or something? Is that how you maintain this little mind control game you have over me.''

Jessie laughs. ''Yes, and it's working very well too, I see! Now come on Chris -- I want to marry you. And I don't want to wait. Now what do you say?''

Chris sighs. ''Fine. You win. We'll get married this week. Does that make you happy?''

Jessie throws her arms around Chris. ''Oh, you have no idea how happy it makes me! I love you so much, Chris!''

''Yeah, yeah -- I'm not getting married by an Elvis impersonator or anything. It has to be something that isn't too tacky. I'm putting my foot down on this one.''

''OK -- I'm sure I can come up with something nice. I'll surf the net tonight and see what kind of chapels are available out there.''

''You better book the flight too -- at this late of a date, I'm sure it'll cost me a fortune.''

''Oh don't worry -- I already did that three weeks ago.'' Jessie says, smiling, as she turns to leave.

''You did WHAT?!'' Chris shouts.

''Hey, I knew you'd say yes.'' Jessie kisses him. ''Now go do your rounds -- I'm through for the day, I'll see you when you get home.'' Jessie leaves, as Chris just stands there, completely stunned.

August 20, 2001 -- The Bellagio Hotel, Las Vegas, NV -- Chris paces nervously in the hotel room. He's dressed in a tux, and waiting for Jessie to finish getting ready. Their ceremony starts in less than an hour. Chris starts banging on the bathroom door.

''Jessie, we need to get going -- would you hurry up in there!'' he says.

''Hey, it's my wedding, I want everything to be perfect.'' Jessie replies. ''Besides, I wouldn't be running this late if you hadn't taken over an hour yourself. So just sit tight and be patient -- I'm almost done.''

Chris walks over to the window and watches the fountain show from his hotel room as he's waiting. He's becoming more and more nervous, wondering how Jessie managed to talk him into this. Then again, it just seemed -- well, *right* to him. He loved Jessie more than he ever thought he could love anyone --- for all the times he screwed up in his life, letting Jessica Collins into his heart was the one thing that he knew wasn't wrong.

''Well -- what do you think?'' Jessie asks. Chris turns around -- Jessie is dressed in a long white, flowing gown -- kind of old-fashioned looking yet perfectly suited for her, and her sandy brown hair is pinned up and has strands of baby's breath draped from it. Chris is speechless. ''That bad?'' she asks. ''What, you don't like the dress? The hair? What?''

Chris walks over to her, takes her in his arms and kisses her softly on the lips. ''I think that you are the most beautiful woman in the world, and I can't for the life of me figure out what I did to deserve you.'' he whispers.

Jessie smiles. ''You know, I've been wondering that myself -- it's a good thing you're just so darn adorable. I think that's what keeps me coming back for more.''

''Hey, don't forget my charming personality and incredible sexual performance.'' Chris says, grinning.

''Well, yeah -- that too.'' Jessie says. ''So, are you ready to do this? You're not gonna back out on me now, are you?''

''No way.'' Chris replies. ''In less than an hour, you are going to be Mrs. Jessica Ramsey. Even if we are the only two who know that for awhile.''

''Yeah, well it'll be a great story to tell our kids someday -- how their parents were married for six months and nobody knew about it!'' Jessie says. They head off for the wedding chapel.

As they wait in the chapel lobby, Chris paces nervously. ''Hey, will you sit down -- you're starting to give me a headache from watching you pace around in a circle like that.'' Jessie says.

''Yeah, well I wish they would hurry up -- I just want to get this over with.'' Chris says.

''Well gee, thanks, that makes me feel SO good. This is supposed to be the most romantic day of our lives, and you act like you're waiting to have a root canal done.'' Jessie quips.

''Jessie, what do you want me to do -- proclaim my undying devotion to you from the rooftops? Sorry, but it's not my style. I'm here, I love you, and we're getting married. Sorry if I'm a bit nervous about the most important day of my life!''

''I don't expect you to be gushing all over the place -- I'd probably be checking to see if you had a fever or something if you did that! But I at least expect that you be *happy* about this.''

''I'm *happy*, okay! I've never done this sort of thing before, Jess -- sorry if my being nervous bothers you so much. Sue me!'' Chris replies.

''Well, you could at least be a bit more excited about it than this! You look like you're about to face a firing squad!'' Jessie says.

''Well *excuuuuuuse* me, but I didn't have time to read the 'Jessica Collins Book of Pre-Wedding Nervousness Etiquette' before we got here.''

''You always have to make a smart-@$$ comment about everything, don't you! GOD, you're irritating!'' Jessie shouts.

''*I'm* irritating? Oh that's a good one coming from you Jess -- you give a whole new meaning to the word!'' Chris shouts back. The minister comes out into the waiting area in the middle of their heated debate.

''Excuse me -- I'm looking for the Ramsey/Collins wedding.'' he says, silencing them both. Chris and Jessie both look up.

''That's us!'' Chris says, smiling. ''You ready to do this, baby?'' he says, looking at Jessie and putting his arm around her.

''You bet. Let's go.'' Jessie replies.

The minister gives them a strange look. ''Are you sure about this?'' he asks. ''Just a few minute ago you were --''

Jessie interrupts him. ''Oh, that's no big deal, we do that all the time.'' she says, smiling. She takes Chris' hand and they walk into the chapel, and exchange traditional wedding vows in a short, private ceremony.

At the altar, Chris and Jessie hold hands and face one another. They repeat what the minister says and exchange vows . . .

''I, Christopher Ramsey, take you, Jessica Collins, to be my lawfully wedded wife. I promise to be true to you, in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, to love, honor and cherish for as long as we both shall live.''

''I, Jessica Collins, take you, Christopher Ramsey, to be my lawfully wedded husband. I promise to be true to you, in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, to love, honor and cherish for as long as we both shall live.''

Chris and Jessie exchange wedding bands, and place them on each other's fingers. After the exchange, the minister says ''I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may --'' Before he even got the words out of his mouth, Chris and Jessie were already locked in a passionate kiss.

That evening, Chris and Jessie celebrated their union at a nightclub in their hotel. Chris went up to the deejay and spoke with him for a few minutes, then came back and sat down with Jessie.

''What were you up to over there?'' she asks.

''You'll see.'' Chris says, grinning. A few minutes later, the deejay makes an announcement.

''May I have your attention please.'' he says. ''We have a couple of newlyweds here celebrating with us this evening, and the groom has requested a special song for me to play for them. So would you please join me in a round of applause for Chris and Jessica Ramsey, as they have their first dance together as husband and wife.'' Everyone in the room begins to clap, and Chris stands up and extends his hand to Jessie.

''May I have this dance, Mrs. Ramsey?'' he asks.

''You most certainly may.'' Jessie replies, smiling.

Chris pulls her close as they make their way out onto the dance floor. ''I love you so much Jess.'' he whispers.

''I love you too baby -- always and forever.'' Jessie replies, looking into his eyes and then kissing him. They hold one another tightly and dance their first dance as husband and wife together . . . .

There used to be a greying tower alone on the sea
You became the light on the dark side of me
Love remained a drug that's the high and not the heal
But did you know that when it snowed
My eyes become large and the light that you shine can't be seen

Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey
Oooh, the more I get of you, stranger it feels, yeah
And now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom on the grey

There is so much a man can tell you, so much he can say
You remain my power, my pleasure, my pain
Baby, to me you're like a growing addiction that I can't deny
Won't you tell me is it healthy, baby?
But did you know that when it snowed
My eyes become large and the light that you shine can't be seen

Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey
Oooh, the more I get of you, stranger it feels, yeah
And now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom on the grey

In the middle of the night, Eve comes out into Patrick's living room, and finds him pouring over some notes intensely. ''Honey -- it's three o'clock in the morning, would you PLEASE come to bed.'' Eve says.

''Just a minute -- I think I've finally figured something out here.''

''What? Patrick, what is so damned fascinating that it can't wait until tomorrow?'' Eve asks.

''It's just a patient, that's all.''

''Patrick, I know you're really into this study of yours, but --'' Eve glances at the file, and notices the name on it, and is stunned. ''Greg Cooper?''

''Eve, I -- you weren't supposed to see that.''

''Greg Cooper is DEAD, Patrick.''

''Eve, I -- no -- he's not. He's alive.''

''And you're treating him?''

''Yes.'' Patrick says sheepishly. ''I should have told you sooner, but -- I just couldn't. And I didn't want you to worry.''

''How? WHY? Patrick, how did you get involved with --''

''It's a long story, Eve. Come on, you're right, it's getting late, let's go to bed -- I'll tell you everything.'' Patrick puts down the file, and takes Eve's hand. She shoves him away.

''No! How can you treat that MONSTER!'' Eve shouts. She then picks up Greg's file.

''Eve, you can't read that, it's confidential.''

''You want confidential, Patrick? Do you want to know what this lunatic did to me? When I was an intern, he held me and the rest of the interns hostage on a floor that was being renovated on GH. He killed a man right in front of me! He kidnaped me, Patrick -- him and that psycho Julie. They put me in a straight jacket, and bricked me into a wall. I had nightmares for MONTHS after that!''

''So what, does that mean he doesn't deserve medical help?''

''NOT from you!'' Eve reads Greg's file, as Patrick angrily watches her. Stunned at what she's found out, she looks up. ''Patrick -- I want you to drop Greg Cooper as a patient.''

''I can't do that Eve. He doesn't have anyone else. And I've found a new formula for my protocol, just for him. It's working, Eve. He's improving.''

''Too bad he didn't succeed in his suicide attempt.'' Eve remarks.

''I can't believe you just said that!'' Patrick says, stunned.

''Believe it.''

''Eve, you're a doctor. You take an oath to SAVE lives. How can you think that way?''

''You don't know what this maniac put me through, Patrick. I hate him. And I don't want you anywhere near him.''

''And you can't tell me who I can and can't treat!'' Patrick insists. ''Eve -- I'm sorry for what happened to you, I really am. But Greg Cooper deserves a fair shot at recovery just as anyone else does.''

''Do you really believe that?'' Eve asks.

''Yes, I do. Now come on, let's go to bed. We'll talk about this tomorrow.''

''Oh, I'm going to bed alright -- at my place.'' Eve goes into the bedroom, and comes back out dressed.

''Eve, don't do this.'' Patrick says.

''Who will it be, Patrick -- Greg Cooper or ME?'' Eve asks.

''Eve -- please --'' Patrick begins.

''I see. Goodbye, Patrick.'' Eve says, and leaves in a huff. Patrick is stunned. After a few minutes, he picks up Greg's file and flings it across the room in anger.

Chapter 34

August 21, 2001 -- morning. Eve is walking down the hall at GH. Patrick turns the corner and sees her. ''Eve, wait!'' he calls out. Eve hears him, but ignores him, and heads for the elevator. The elevator opens, and Eve steps in. Patrick follows, and the door closes. ''Eve -- please, don't do this.'' Patrick says to her.

''I'm not doing anything.'' Eve replies.

''Okay, we're gonna settle this right here, right now.'' Patrick says, and he pushes the emergency button, stopping the elevator.

''Are you insane! Look, I still have rounds to finish, I don't have time to fool around here.'' Eve says angrily.

''Eve -- I will not let a patient come between us.''

''A patient? Patrick, this isn't a PATIENT, this is Greg Cooper, the psychopath lunatic who made my life a living hell!''

''And he's getting better.'' Patrick says.

''Do you think I CARE?''

''Eve -- it's not like I want the guy to be released or anything, but -- think of all the people that my treatment might be able to help someday. If I can help someone like Greg Cooper -- the possibilities are endless, Eve. There could be someone out there with severe psychosis who is stopped from doing any number of horrible things. Can't you SEE that? Or maybe you can't --because all you're thinking about is YOURSELF!'' Patrick says. He starts the elevator again, and when the door opens, Patrick starts to get off. ''I never thought you would be this selfish, Eve -- I guess I was wrong about you.'' Patrick leaves, and Eve looks down, suddenly ashamed.

Chris sits up in bed, smiling as he watches Jessie sleep. He runs his fingers through her hair softly, and Jessie opens her eyes, looks up at him and smiles. ''Good morning, Mrs. Ramsey.'' he whispers.

''Good morning.'' she says, cuddling with him. ''Last night was -- amazing.''

''Of course it was.'' Chris says, grinning.

''And you're so humble, too.'' Jessie teases.

''You know what I want to do today?'' Chris asks seductively, pulling her close and kissing her on the forehead.

''What?''

''Get downstairs before the crowds build up. I've got $1000 burning a hole in my pocket that I KNOW I can triple in an hour.''

''Chris! We're on our honeymoon, and you want to GAMBLE????''

''Hey, I'll split the winnings with you. That's what this marriage thing is all about, right?''

''You're impossible.''

''Well, that's what you get for bringing me to Vegas. Now are you gonna go down there with me for good luck or what?''

''What do I get out of this?'' Jessie asks.

''If I win, you get a VERY happy husband who will do whatever you want this evening -- in or outside of this room.''

''Okay, and if you don't win?''

''That -- is not an option. I always win.'' Chris says, grinning.

''You mean you always CHEAT.''

''Hey -- can I help it if I learned a few handy tricks from my old man?'' Jessie sighs.

''Fine -- I guess I can indulge you this one time. If you'll indulge ME first.''

''And exactly what did you have in mind?''

''This.'' Jessie says, and she climbs on top of Chris, running her lips up and down his bare chest . . . . . . .

''Patrick.'' Eve whispers, entering his office. Patrick is sitting at his desk, reading a file.

''What?'' he says, not even looking up.

''I'm sorry.'' Eve whispers. Patrick turns around.

''Is this how it's gonna be every time I do something you don't like?'' he asks pointedly.

''I just told you I was sorry.''

''I know what you told me. And you'll be sorry the next time -- and the time after that, and the time after that -- Eve, if I'm in a relationship with someone, I don't expect one of my jobs to be babysitting that person's fragile ego. My patients are MY business -- not yours.''

''Patrick, I just don't want you to get hurt -- you don't know Cooper like I do. He's a maniac --- what if he relapses? Who do you think the first person he'll come after will be? Are you really willing to take that risk?''

''Maybe I am.''

''Well, I'm NOT! Patrick, I've been on the receiving end of Cooper's insanity, and it's NOT pretty!''

''Eve -- you just have to trust me here. Nothing's gonna happen.''

''You don't KNOW that! I can't go through it again, Patrick!'' Eve shouts, starting to get hysterical. ''I can't go through it again. I can't handle what happened with Ryan again, I just can't.'' Eve starts sobbing. Patrick gets up.

''Hey -- come here.'' Patrick says, holding Eve close. ''Ryan Chamberlain is DEAD. He can't hurt you anymore.''

''He's just like him -- Greg Cooper is just like him. And if you're working with him, and you're dating ME --''

''I will never let Greg Cooper -- or anyone else -- hurt you ever again. You just need to trust me.'' Patrick says, wiping her tears away.

''I do trust you -- but --''

''Hey -- no buts. Look -- I've been working with another doctor at the facility. I'm hoping to eventually turn over all of my data on Greg to him, as soon as my test results are complete. It'll be one more month, tops. I promise, okay?''

''Okay.'' Eve whispers.

''I'm finished here for today -- let's go home.'' Patrick says, putting his arm around Eve as they leave the room.

August 26, 2001 -- Jessie and Chris walk up to the front door of their house, carrying several suitcases. Chris sets down what he's carrying. ''Put your stuff down.'' Chris says, as he turns the key in the door.

''Why?''

''Because -- we just got married, this is a tradition.'' Chris says, and he grabs the bag Jessie is carrying, tosses it aside, and scoops Jessie up in his arms as he opens the door.

''Chris, put me down you --'' Jessie begins, and Chris quiets her with a kiss as he walks in the door carrying her.

''There -- now you can get the bags.'' Chris says, putting her down. Jessie just shakes her head in disbelief, and brings the luggage inside. Chris heads over to the couch, and sits down, leaning back and relaxing.

''Um -- excuse me -- are you gonna help me unpack or are you just gonna sit there on your butt while I do all the work?''

''Hey, I just carried YOU -- I need a break, that was hard work.'' Chris says jokingly.

''Oh, you are in SO much trouble!'' Jessie says, pouncing on Chris as he lays back on the couch.

''You know, you're incredibly sexy when you're pissed off, Mrs. Ramsey.'' Chris teases.

''Yeah, that's exactly what you WANTED, isn't it?'' Jessie says, cuddling with him.

''Maybe.'' Chris says, grinning.

''And about this ‘Mrs. Ramsey' thing -- I'm not sure how comfortable I am with that.''

''What do you mean?''

''I mean -- what law says that I have to take your name? Isn't that kind of -- archaic? Like I'm your property or something?''

''I just assumed that -- you would.''

''But why do *I* have to be the one to change? Why can't we do what my parents did?''

''Which is, what, I'm almost afraid to ask.''

''Well, my dad took on my mom's surname as a middle name, so both of them were Matthews-Collins. That way, it was fair. And nobody is anybody's property.''

''You want me to take on the Collins name? You're nuts!'' Chris says.

''You wouldn't have to USE it, it would just -- BE there legally. I mean, it's like a middle name -- I don't use my middle name, but it's THERE -- unfortunately.'' Jessie adds under her breath.

''What IS your middle name, anyway?'' Chris asks.

''You know, I better get that stuff put away, if we don't do it tonight, it'll never get done.'' Jessie says, quickly getting up.

''Ah -- not so fast!'' Chris says, pulling her back. ''You know, you were pretty quick in showing your birth certificate to that judge. How bad can this name be?'' Chris gets up and heads for the bag where they put all of their paperwork.

''Chris, get out of there, you don't need to --''

''Hey -- MY luggage!'' Chris says, pushing her away. He finds the envelope and opens it. ''Let's see -- here it is -- Jessica --'' Chris suddenly stops, and bursts out laughing. ''Jessica Bluebell Collins?????''

''Shut up.'' Jessie says, very embarrassed.

''Bluebell? Oh, this is TOO good! I think I'm gonna make copies -- I bet the hospital staff would get a kick out of this one!''

''Oh, don't you dare!''

''Let's see -- if YOU do all the unpacking AND cook me dinner -- I might consider keeping this -- just between us.''

''You're blackmailing your own WIFE?''

''Oh, come on, it's just a middle name -- what's the big deal?''

''EXACTLY! So what's the big deal about taking MY last name?'' Chris sighs.

''Alright, fine -- at least we're not going public with our nuptials, so I have some time to get used to it.''

''Well good -- that's more like it.'' Jessie says.

''So -- what's for dinner?''

''Honey, you weren't SERIOUS about that.''

''Jessica Bluebell Collins -- I think I'll post a copy of this on the bulletin board.'' Chris says, waving the certificate in front of her.

''You are evil.''

''Yeah, and you LOVE it, too!'' Chris says, lying back on the sofa and grinning, as Jessie stomps into the kitchen, griping under her breath.

August 27, 2001 -- ''Hey, bro!'' Chris shouts, spotting Patrick standing behind the Nurses station as he practically skips off the elevator. ''How you doing?'' Patrick gives him an odd stare.

''Are you okay?''

''Wonderful. Couldn't be better!'' Chris says, grinning happily.

''You LOOK like my brother, and you sound like him, but -- have they started cloning people now and nobody told me about it?''

''What, I can't be happy?''

''You? THIS happy? Um -- no.'' Patrick teases, adding a notation to a file and putting it back. ''I take it your vacation was -- good.''

''Oh yeah --- it was fabulous. So -- how are things with Eve?'' Patrick sighs.

''Things with Eve are -- tense. She found out about Greg Cooper.''

''And she's still speaking to you?''

''For now -- why didn't you tell me about her past with Cooper?'' The two men go into the waiting area and sit down.

''Why didn't you tell HER what you were doing? You're the one who's so gung-ho on this 'no secrets in a relationship' formula that you've been hounding ME about for the last two months!''

''NOW you sound like my brother.'' Patrick remarks. ''I just didn't see the point in telling her.''

''How'd she take it?''

''Not well -- she's -- she's afraid of -- what might happen to me or -- to her.''

''I can't say that I blame her.'' Chris replies.

''I know what she went through with Ryan, and --''

''You have no IDEA what she went through -- I was there. She almost died, Patrick. The fact that she's alive is nothing short of a miracle. And I honestly didn't know how she was going to cope with this emotionally. This has to be a nightmare for her.''

''You think I don't know that? Chris -- I've seen the scars on her. I can only imagine what she went through physically. She still has nightmares sometimes. They're getting less and less frequent, but -- I know she's not over it.''

''Then why are you still working with Cooper?''

''I'm just trying to finish up my research. I already promised Eve it wouldn't be much longer.''

''Well, you better keep your promise. Get away from Cooper, he's bad news. And frankly, if anything happened to you -- given everything she's been through, I don't think Eve could take it.''

August 30, 2001 -- Jessie and Kim are having lunch at the Recovery Room. ''So -- have you told the father?'' Jessie asks.

''No -- look, let's not talk about this -- how was your trip?''

''Don't try to change the subject -- you need to tell him, Kim.''

''I can't.''

''Why not?''

''I told you -- he got back with his old girlfriend. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do.''

''Maybe you should tell her.'' Jessie suggests.

''Are you serious?''

''Why not? I mean, they were broken up when it happened, right? It's not like she can get mad, and -- come on, most women have a maternal side to them. As long as she doesn't see you as a threat to their relationship -- it's not like you want him BACK or anything.'' Kim is silent. ''You DON'T want him back, do you?''

''I can't stop thinking about him. I -- I love him.''

''Kim -- you can't break up a relationship because of a mistake.''

''It WASN'T a mistake!'' Kim shouts, suddenly becoming defensive. ''How DARE you say that!''

''Hey, don't get mad at me -- I'm just going by what you told me. I thought this was just a short fling, and --''

''I don't know why I thought you'd understand.'' Kim says, angrily getting up and stomping away from the table. Chris enters just as she stomps off. He sees Jessie and heads for her table.

''So, did you and your new best friend have a spat?'' he asks, picking up a menu.

''I've never seen her like that. All I did was make one little comment, and --''

''Well, good riddance -- you know how I feel about her.'' Chris says, still reading the menu.

''Oh, come on -- she's going through a lot right now, it's probably hormones or something.''

''Hormones?'' Chris asks, not looking up.

''You can't tell ANYONE this -- Kim is pregnant.'' Chris drops the menu.

''What did you say?''

''She had a thing with some guy a couple months ago, and now she's pregnant, but he got back with his old girlfriend. You can't tell anyone.''

''No -- no one.'' Chris says, in shock.

''So, what are you gonna order?'' Jessie asks.

''I'm -- not hungry. Jess, I just remembered a patient I need to check on -- I'll see you later.'' Chris gets up and rushes out the door.

Chris bursts into Patrick's lab. ''Patrick! Are you in here?'' he shouts.

''I'm back here. What do you need?'' Patrick replies from the other end of the room.

''I need to get into your computer.'' Chris says, sitting down at Patrick's desk. ''What's your password?''

''You can't go in there, those are confidential files.'' Patrick says, walking over to the desk.

''To hell with confidential. Log me in.'' Chris says adamantly.

''NO!'' Patrick says, turning off the computer. ''Are you insane?''

''Reardon, I NEED to get into those files.''

''What is going on?'' Chris sighs.

''Kim's pregnant.''

''She told you this?''

''Jessie told me.''

''JESSIE? Jessie knows about you and Kim?'' Patrick asks, stunned.

''NO, she doesn't know -- she's friends with that harpy, and I guess she confided in her. I want to know if she's telling the truth.''

''Well, here's a thought -- instead of breaking into confidential patient files, why don't you ask Kim!''

''Because -- what if she's lying?''

''Unlike YOU, most people don't make a sport out of lying.'' Patrick remarks.

''She does -- I can tell. Look, I know a con artist when I see one -- I should, I grew up around hundreds of them. And Kim Keil is about as phony as a three dollar bill. Something's not right about her.''

''I've gotten that impression myself.''

''See -- I'm not the only one.''

''I swear I know her from somewhere -- I just wish I could place her.''

''Right now I just want to know if she's really pregnant -- are you gonna let me into those files or not?'' Patrick sighs, and gets up and locks his office door and closes the blinds. ''Paranoid much?'' Chris remarks, as Patrick just glares at him. He logs onto the computer and pulls up Kim's file.

''Here it is -- she had a physical a few weeks ago, and --- she's pregnant. Date of conception -- late June.''

''Dammit!'' Chris shouts.

''I don't know if congratulations are in order here or not.''

''Oh, you're NOT funny! What the hell am I gonna do? Is there any chance this is a mistake.''

''I typed it into the computer directly from her file.''

''Yes, and you are just SO perfect you don't make errors. I forgot.''

''Hey, don't shoot the messenger.'' Patrick says.

''I bet the kid's not even mine.'' Chris mumbles.

''Oh yeah, I'm sure she slept with about a dozen other guys that week. Chris -- THIS is why you need to tell Jessie EVERYTHING.''

''I can't. Especially not now.''

''Not now? Is -- is Jessie pregnant, too?''

''No, we -- we got married.''

''What?''

''We're not telling anyone -- you can't tell a SOUL, not even Eve. Especially not Eve, the world will know by the end of the day if you tell her.''

''When did you get married?''

''On our trip -- we eloped.''

''I'd say congratulations, but -- given the bombshell that just dropped on you -- why aren't you telling anyone?''

''Because we're sick of hearing from the peanut gallery what a lousy couple we make. We're planning a public wedding on Valentine's Day -- we just want this to be our secret for now. You HAVE to swear, you won't tell anyone.''

''I won't -- I promise.'' Patrick says. ''So -- what about Kim?''

''I think it's about time Nurse Kim and I had little chat. Thanks for letting me use your computer.''

''Good luck.''

''Thanks -- I think I'm gonna need it.'' Chris says, and he leaves.

Chris knocks on Kim's apartment door, and she answers. ''Chris. What are you doing here?''

''When were you gonna tell me?'' he asks, barging into her apartment.

''Tell you what?''

''Oh, don't play dumb with me -- I know you're pregnant.''

''How -- how did you find out?'' Kim asks.

''That doesn't matter. Is it mine?''

''There wasn't anyone else -- yes, it's yours.'' Chris sighs.

''Are you keeping it?''

''What, you want me to --''

''I'll -- I'll pay for whatever it costs to --''

''I can't believe you! You would have me kill your own child?''

''Look -- how do I even know this kid is mine, huh? Until I see DNA results, I won't believe anything!''

''I can't believe I ever saw anything in you!''

''I don't know what you saw. It was ONE NIGHT, Kim -- one night that frankly, I'm sorry ever happened. You know what -- why don't you do us both a favor. That offer I made you, about the job in Phoenix -- it still stands whenever you want it.''

''You just don't want Jessie to find out.''

''Jessie has nothing to do with this.'' Chris says.

''What if I tell her everything?''

''You wouldn't.''

''Try me.'' Kim replies.

''You stay away from Jessie -- and if it's money you want, you're not getting a dime out of me until I see DNA results.'' Chris leaves, slamming the door behind him.

''You're just like him -- I never should have trusted you, you're just like HIM! And you'll pay for it, too!'' Kim says to herself once Chris is gone.

''Jessie!'' Chris shouts, entering his house.

''In here!'' Jessie calls out from the other room.

''Honey, I need to talk to you about --'' Chris stops as he enters the bathroom -- Jessie is in the tub, smiling at him.

''Care to join me?'' she asks. Chris grins, and without hesitation, starts removing his clothes, and climbs into the tub with Jessie, wrapping himself around her and kissing her on the cheek.

''How do you always know exactly what I need?'' he asks.

''Because that's what wives are supposed to do. What did you want to talk about?''

''Oh -- it can wait. This is much -- MUCH more important.'' Chris says, as he reaches over and kisses Jessie on the lips.

September 5, 2001, late morning -- Chris is in the oncall room on the phone. ''What do you mean you haven't found anything yet? Well keep looking -- there has to be SOMETHING in her background that she's not proud of. Because everybody has something -- look, what the hell am I paying you for? You find me something by TODAY, you got that?'' Chris slams down the phone as Patrick walks in.

''What'd they do?'' Patrick asks.

''NOTHING.'' Chris says.

''You're up to something.''

''What, you can read my mind now?''

''No you just -- get this look on your face when you're up to something. Spill it.''

''I hate it when you do that.'' Chris says. ''I hired someone to look into Kim's background -- nothing so far.''

''And, this was a good plan because . . . . .''

''Everyone has something to hide. I just need to get something on her, and get her out of town.''

''You didn't tell Jessie.'' Chris sighs.

''I wanted to -- I almost did the other night, but -- how can I tell her now?''

''You HAVE to, Chris -- you don't have a choice anymore.''

''She'll never forgive me.''

''Maybe. Maybe not. But face it -- she's gonna find out. Do you want her to hear it from Kim, or do you want her to hear it from YOU?'' Patrick asks.

''Alright -- I'll tell her tonight.'' Chris says. ''I have surgery in about an hour -- I better get going.''

''Chris -- if you need anything -- I'm here.'' Patrick offers.

''Thanks.'' Chris says, and he leaves.

Jessie and Kim enter Jessie's house together. ''Hey, I'm glad you could come over -- I know you've been kind of mad at me since the other day, and -- I thought maybe we could talk about it.''

''Me too -- we have a lot to talk about.'' Kim says. ''When is Chris going to be home?''

''Oh, not for several hours. We have plenty of time. Why?''

''Oh, I was just wondering how long I'd have to wait.''

''Wait for what?'' Jessie asks.

''For all the fun to begin.'' Kim reaches into her purse and pulls out a gun. ''Why don't you have a seat Jessie -- because I have A LOT to tell you. Let's see . . . . where do I begin . . .'' Kim says, pointing the gun at Jessie . . . . . . . .

Chapter 35

Jessie looks at Kim, both nervous and shocked. ''Kim -- what are you doing?''

''I'm really sorry about this, Jessie -- it's nothing against you personally. I actually kind of like you -- and I really thought for the first time in a long time I found a friend. Until --''

''Kim -- I AM your friend. Now, I don't know what's wrong, but I want to help. Hey -- you know, my cousin Kevin -- he could probably give me the name of someone you could talk to, and --''

''I don't need a shrink. I'm not crazy, Jessie.''

''I didn't say you were.''

''You're looking at me like I am. Jessie -- this isn't my fault. It's his fault. He lied to me.''

''Who?''

''He told me I was beautiful. He was so nice to me. But he was lying. Just like the other did. They're all the same -- and I can't let them get away with it.'' Jessie does her best to remain calm.

''Okay -- Kim, I want to help you, I really do. But you need to put the gun down. You don't want to hurt me.''

''No, I don't. But he has to pay -- I'm so sorry, Jessie.''

''Is this about your baby's father? Have you told him.''

''He knows -- he wanted our baby to die. Can you imagine anyone that evil?''

''Kim -- just give me the gun, okay. Then maybe we can go find him together and talk to him -- maybe I can reason with him.''

''Oh, he'll be here -- that's who we're waiting for.'' Kim says.

''We're waiting for -- oh, Kim, no you don't mean --''

''I'm sorry you had to find out this way, Jessie. I really am.'' Kim says, as Jessie gets a look of shock on her face.

Kevin stands on the balcony of his hotel room, staring off. Lucy walks up behind him and wraps her arms around him, kissing him on the neck. ''Good morning.'' she whispers. ''How long have you been up?''

''Awhile. Are the twins still asleep?'' Kevin asks.

''Yes, they are. What were you thinking about just now?'' Lucy asks.

''Nothing in particular -- just -- how lucky I am to have you. Most women would have cut their losses and sent me packing a long time ago.''

''Well, I'm not most women.''

''No, you definitely are not.'' Kevin says, taking Lucy in his arms and kissing her. ''Lucy -- I want to go home.''

''But Doc, this has been so wonderful -- just you, and me, and the twins, and --''

''And now it's time to get back to reality. Let's face it -- the last year has been a living hell -- for both of us. But I want my life back Lucy -- my life in Port Charles. And I'm ready to face everything that's happened -- and everything I've done.''

''You're -- thinking about Greg Cooper, aren't you? Doc -- you can't help him.''

''He's my brother, Lucy. I have to try.''

''You tried to help Ryan -- and look what that got you.''

''I admit I was wrong, keeping everything from you. And I'm sorry. But I need to do whatever I can for Greg -- Lucy, I know this is hard for you to accept but -- he did save my life. Ryan was going to kill me. Greg is the one who helped me escape. Whatever you think of him -- I owe him that much. I know he can never be released into society, but -- he deserves at least one person on his side.''

''Doc -- I just don't --''

''I'm not going to experiment with any kind of drugs again, Lucy -- I learned my lesson. It was a stupid thing to do, and I swear, it won't happen again.''

''You promise?''

''I promise -- on our children's lives, I swear.'' Kevin says. ''Now come on -- let's pack. I want to call Victor and Jessie, and let them know we're coming home.''

''I love you, Doc.'' Lucy says.

''I love you too, Lucy.'' Kevin replies, and he kisses her.

Eve enters the lab. ''Honey, I need some test results, and I don't want people to think that you're playing favorites with me, but if you can get them done for me REALLY fast this time, I'd --'' Eve begins, as she sees Patrick pouring over a file at his desk. ''What are you doing?''

''Eve -- take a look at this. Something just doesn't look right to me here. Am I missing something?'' Eve takes the file.

''Hey, isn't this that freaky nurse that Chris --''

''Yeah it is.''

''Are you supposed to have this?''

''Eve, just look at the file, you can lecture me on ethics later.'' Eve sighs.

''I swear, you're becoming more like your brother every day. He put you up to this, didn't he?'' Eve reads over the file. ''Oh my god, she's PREGNANT? Does Chris know?''

''Eve -- look really closely at the numbers. Is it me or do the look -- altered?'' Eve looks at them again.

''Yeah they -- do. But who would --''

''A couple of weeks ago, Kim was in here, and I had to run out for an emergency in the ER. She could have easily made a change on the chart. I hadn't put the results in the computer yet, and --''

''But why would she do this?''

''I don't know -- but I'm gonna find out.'' Patrick says, getting up.

''Hey -- what about my test results?'' Eve asks.

''I'll get to them as soon as I can -- just leave everything on the table.'' Patrick says, and he leaves.

''Thanks a lot.'' Eve says to herself, pouting.

''Kim -- Chris is my -- fiancee. And he's never cheated on me.''

''Yes he has, Jessie -- I'm sorry. Chris isn't who you think he is. He's a liar, just like the others.''

''What others? Kim -- I really wish you would let me help you.''

''You don't believe me, do you? Well, we'll just have to wait until Mr. Wonderful gets home -- then you'll see.'' The phone rings -- Jessie reaches to answer it. ''Don't.'' Kim says, pointing the gun at her.

''It could be the hospital -- I'm on call, what if they need me.''

''Fine -- but watch what you say.'' Kim says, holding the gun on her as Jessie nervously picks up the phone.

''Hello?'' Jessie says, trying to stay calm.

''Jessie -- it's Kevin.''

''Kevin, hi -- I was just thinking about you.'' Jessie says, as Kim glares at her.

''I just wanted to let you know that Lucy and I are going to be coming home -- we're heading back tomorrow.''

''Kevin, we've really missed you -- I wish you were coming back sooner.''

''Jessie, I just said we're coming back tomorrow. Is something wrong?''

''Oh, yes. Have you talked to Uncle Victor yet -- I know he's really missed you.''

''Okay -- something's going on. Are you okay? Do you want me to call Victor and tell him to come over?''

''Yeah, you could say that.''

''Is someone there with you?''

''I -- guess so.''

''Someone you don't want to be there.''

''No, not really.''

''Okay -- I'll call Victor right now. And I'll be home soon. I love you, Jessie.''

''I love you too, Kevin. Give lots of hugs to the twins and Lucy, okay? Bye.'' Jessie says, as Kevin hangs up the phone.

''Lucy -- something's wrong.'' Kevin says, as Lucy enters the room.

''What?''

''I just talked to Jessie -- there's something going on, and -- whatever it is, I think she's in trouble. Someone is there with her -- she wants me to call Victor.''

''Doc -- you don't think that -- Ryan could be --''

''I don't even want to think about that. But I'm glad we're going home. I just hope we're not too late.'' Kevin says.

''Hello there, son.'' Victor says, entering Greg's hospital room. ''How are you today?'' No response. ''Greg -- I know you must really hate me. And you have every right to. But I want to be here for you, Greg -- I want to help you.''

''Why now?'' Greg finally says.

''Because, I -- I finally realized that -- you deserved better than what you got in life. I'm not a perfect man -- I've made many mistakes in my life. And abandoning you was one of the biggest.''

''Why didn't you ever try to find me?'' Greg asks.

''I had figured you -- you had a family. You didn't need me.''

''My family hated me. All my ‘father' wanted was an heir to pass on the Cooper name. He never cared -- he shipped me off from boarding school to boarding school. I just never felt like I fit in with them -- now I know why.''

''I'm so sorry, son -- you deserved far better.'' Victor's cell phone rings. He looks down at it.

''Aren't you going to answer that?''

''No -- whoever it is -- they can wait. I think we need to spend some time -- getting to know each other.'' Victor says.

Patrick enters the oncall room, where Chris is finishing getting dressed. ''Hey -- I'm glad I found you. Take a look at this.'' Patrick says, handing Chris Kim's chart.

''I thought you were against this sort of thing.'' Chris comments.

''Yeah, well something made me double check this -- and I'm glad I did. Look at these numbers.''

''These were changed.'' Chris says, looking up at Patrick. ''Which means that --''

''Kim's not pregnant.''

''That bitch! Why would she do that -- what could she possibly have to gain from --'' Chris stops, remembering the night he was with Kim. ''Oh my god.''

''What?'' Patrick asks.

''Patrick -- I never slept with Kim. I almost did, and -- Jessie called. And I stopped -- I couldn't do it. I told Kim to leave, and -- I guess I passed out then. I didn't cheat on her. I never cheated on her.'' Chris says, smiling.

''Are you sure?''

''I'm positive. I'm going home to tell Jessie everything right now.''

''Yeah, you should do that.'' Patrick says.

''Hey -- thanks.'' Chris says, patting Patrick on the shoulder. Patrick is just about to leave the room, when he hears a cellphone ring. It's Chris' phone. Patrick picks it up, and decides to answer it.

''Hello?'' Patrick says.

''Dr. Ramsey?''

''No, this is his brother -- can I help you?''

''I've -- got some things for Dr. Ramsey -- I'm faxing them to the number he gave me right now.''

''I'll make sure he gets them. Thanks.'' Patrick says. He looks at the fax machine in the oncall room, and a few minutes later, some papers come through. Patrick picks them up, and looks at them with shock. ''Oh my god. I've got to call Chris and warn him.'' Patrick looks at Chris' cellphone. ''Dammit!'' he says to himself. He races out of the oncall room, running into Eve.

''Hey, where's the fire?'' Eve asks. ''And did you get those test results done?''

''I'm sorry, I won't be able to get to them for awhile.''

''Patrick, I need them.'' Eve whines.

''I'm sorry -- have you seen Chris?''

''I saw him leave just a few minutes ago -- why?''

''I knew I recognized her from somewhere -- now it all makes sense.'' Patrick shows Eve the papers that were faxed over. ''There was this doctor at the hospital I worked with in New York. His -- his wife supposedly killed him, then killed herself. He was cheating on her. It was all over the papers. And the nurse he was having an affair with suddenly left town after he died -- and it was --''

''Oh my god, it was Kim. Patrick -- do you think she --''

''She was a brunette when I worked with her. And she had longer hair. That's why I couldn't place her.''

''Patrick, look at this -- when she was in college, she stood trial for murdering her boyfriend. She was acquitted -- not enough evidence to convict.''

''I've got to get this to Chris.'' Patrick says.

''Patrick, you need to call the police.''

''And tell them what -- Eve, she hasn't done anything. Yet. And I want to make sure she doesn't.''

''Can't you just call Chris and tell him?''

''He left his cellphone in the oncall room. I need to go tell him -- he's -- he's telling Jessie everything tonight. He needs to see this.''

''Okay -- you be careful, if that woman knows that you know --''

''I will Eve -- and I'm sorry about those lab results.''

''It's okay -- they can wait.'' Eve says.

''I'll do them as soon as I get back -- I promise.'' Patrick says, and he kisses her quickly on the cheek and leaves.

Chris starts to open the front door. ''Chris, get out of here, call the police now!'' Jessie shouts, and Chris immediately opens the door.

''Jessie, what --'' and he stops as he sees Kim pulling Jessie close, holding a gun to her forehead.

''That was a VERY stupid thing to do, Jessie. I thought you were smarter than that.'' Kim says.

''Let her go.'' Chris says. ''Please.''

''Well -- since you said please.'' Kim says, and she releases Jessie. Chris slowly moves close to Jessie.

''Are you okay?'' he asks. Jessie turns and glares at him. ''I'm guessing she -- told you some things. Jess -- it's not what you think.''

''What is it, then?'' Jessie asks.

''Yes, Chris, what is it? Are you going to offer me more money to leave town?'' Kim asks. Jessie turns and looks at Chris. ''Oh, he didn't tell you? He wanted to set me up with a job on the other side of the country -- anything to keep our little secret.''

''You lying witch! I never slept with you and you know it!'' Chris shouts. ''You're not even pregnant -- I saw the chart, you changed it. What do you want from us?''

''I'm just tired of being lied to -- I thought you were different. But you're just like them -- you men, you're all liars and cheaters. And you need to be punished.'' Kim says.

''Okay. Okay, I was a jerk, I admit that. But Jessie has nothing to do with this -- let her go. I'm the one you want, not her.'' Chris says.

''Oh, you're SO noble, Chris -- but I'm not gonna be the one responsible for your -- untimely demise. Why should I be? No, it has to be Jessie.'' Kim says.

''Kim -- other people know, about us. You won't get away with it. Look -- it's not too late. We can get you help --'' Chris begins.

''Oh, you'd LOVE that, wouldn't you? Having me locked away somewhere. That would be the perfect solution for you.'' Kim says. She's so wrapped up in her discussion with Chris, she hasn't noticed that Jessie has gotten up, and is making her way behind her. ''You deserve everything you get.'' Kim says, pointing the gun right at Chris. ''You know, it's too bad we never did get a chance -- I really liked you, Chris.'' Jessie comes up from behind, and grabs Kim. The two women struggle, and the gun goes off into the air. Jessie gets a better grip on Kim from behind, but Kim uses every bit of strength she has, and shoves Jessie backward with force. Jessie hits her head on the kitchen counter, and falls unconscious to the floor.

''Jess!'' Chris shouts, rushing toward her.

''Get away from her!'' Kim shouts.

''She's hurt! I need to help her!''

''You'll do what *I* say -- and if you take one more step, I'll kill you.''

''Why don't you -- just kill me then. That's what you're planning on doing, isn't it?'' The doorbell rings.

''Don't even think about answering it.'' Kim says.

''Whoever it is knows someone is home -- my car is in the driveway.''

''Chris, it's Patrick -- let me in, it's important!'' Patrick shouts from outside.

''You say a word, and you're dead.'' Kim tells him. Chris just stands there, frozen in fear.

''Chris! I know you're home -- I need to talk to you, it's important!'' Patrick says. Finally, Patrick just opens the door. ''Chris, why didn't you --'' Patrick enters, and stops when he sees what's going on.

''You're just in time, Dr. Reardon -- and you saved me a trip. You always were nosy -- you should learn to mind your own business.'' Kim tells him.

''Patrick, go check on Jessie.'' Chris says. Patrick slowly moves past them, and goes over to Jessie's side, checking her vitals.

''She's okay. Vitals are strong.'' Patrick tells him, standing up. ''Why are you doing this?''

''Because he has to be punished.'' Kim says.

''Just like the others?'' Patrick asks.

''Others?'' Chris says.

''That's what I came here for -- it seems this isn't the first time Kim has gotten herself in the middle of something like this. You killed Dr. Dutton and his wife, didn't you?'' Patrick asks.

''Dr. Dutton's wife killed him, and then killed herself. I wasn't even there.'' Kim says.

''What about in college -- you were on trial for killing your boyfriend.'' Patrick says.

''I was acquitted.'' Kim says.

''Chris -- this is a pattern for her.'' Patrick says.

''What, did you pay a detective to dig up dirt on me?'' Kim asks Patrick.

''No -- I did.'' Chris says. ''Let my brother go -- he didn't do anything to you.''

''Oh, that's not true -- back in New York, he was the buttinsky who convinced Matthew to go back to his wife, and leave ME. I should have dealt with him THEN, but -- isn't fate wonderful? I have a second chance now to do what I should have done a long time ago. But I think I'll deal with you first -- I'm sure Patrick would like to watch.'' Kim says, and she lifts up the gun and aims it at Chris. She starts to pull back the trigger.

''NO!'' Patrick shouts, and he jumps on Kim, slamming her down on the floor. As they struggle for the gun, Chris gets to the phone and calls the police. As soon as he hangs up the phone, he looks over at Patrick and Kim, who are still struggling for the gun. Suddenly, the gun goes off. Kim sits up, and Patrick lies on the floor, his abdominal area covered in blood.

''Oh my god, Patrick!'' Chris shouts, rushing toward him.

''Don't move.'' Kim says, standing up.

''It's over Kim -- the police are on their way here.''

''Well, then they'll just find all of you here, dead. Because I'm outta here.'' Kim says, lifting up the gun. She's about to pull the trigger, when suddenly Jessie, who has regained consciousness, hits her on the back of the head with a frying pan. Kim falls to the floor, unconscious. Chris breathes a sigh of relief.

''Jess -- are you okay?'' Chris asks.

''Fine --- oh my god, Patrick.'' Jessie says.

''Go to the car and get my bag.'' Jessie hesitates a bit. ''NOW!'' Chris shouts, and Jessie races out the door. Chris moves closer to Patrick. ''Patrick -- hey, can you hear me buddy?'' Chris asks, checking over Patrick's gunshot wound.

''Chris.'' Patrick whispers.

''Hey, it's okay -- help is on the way, you're gonna be fine.'' Chris tells him.

''Please -- forgive me.'' Patrick says, grabbing Chris' wrist tightly.

''Forgive you -- for what? Hey, you just saved my life here.'' Jessie enters the house with Chris' medical bag. ''Jess, get a blanket, he's going into shock. And get a pillow for his head.'' Jessie gets up and brings back a pillow and blanket.

''I -- should have -- been there --'' Patrick says weakly.

''Hey -- don't talk. You're here now -- that's all that matters.'' Chris says.

''Forgive -- me.'' Patrick says, growing weaker.

''I forgive you, alright. You were young -- we all make mistakes when we're young, right?'' Chris says.

''Chris, his BP is dropping.'' Jessie says worriedly, as they hear sirens coming closer.

''Hey -- don't you leave me now, Patrick, you hear me! Come on -- we just found each other, you can't leave me now. PATRICK!!!!'' Chris screams, as Patrick loses consciousness . . . . .
