June 20, 2001 -- Chris sees Monica Quartermaine in the hall, and approaches her. ''Dr. Quartermaine -- have you got a minute?'' Chris asks. ''Make it quick, I have an appointment in ten minutes.'' Monica replies. ''Well, I was -- kind of wondering if I could get some time off.'' Chris asks nervously. ''You're welcome to put in for vacation time -- you can talk to my secretary and see what openings there are in the summer.'' ''I kind of meant -- now.'' Chris says. ''Dr. Ramsey -- you were just fully reinstated at this hospital in January. You don't even HAVE any vacation time available until July. And let's not forget that you missed an awful lot of work not too long ago.'' ''That was hardly my fault -- and I made every minute of that time up in overtime and you know it. Look, something important came up, and I really need to --'' ''The only thing you need to do is get back to work, and convince me that it wasn't a mistake keeping you on here. Now you're welcome to put in for a vacation anytime after July -- and not one day sooner. Got it?'' Monica says. ''Yes ma'am.'' Chris says. Monica walks away, and Chris storms off, extremely upset. He stomps into the oncall room in a huff, and slams the files he was carrying down on the table. He then sits down on the couch and sighs, just as Eve enters the room. ''Hey -- I'm glad I found you. I really need some advice. It's about Patrick, and --'' Eve begins. ''Look Eve, I'm in no mood to hear one of your whiny monologues about your latest pathetic relationship. I've got my own problems, I don't need to hear yours.'' Chris remarks. ''What's your problem today, Ramsey?'' Eve asks, a bit angry. ''My problem? You want to know what my problem is? Jessica Collins -- she's been a pain since the first day I met her! I don't know what made me think that would ever change.'' Chris says, obviously upset. ''Jessie left, didn't she?'' Eve asks. ''She didn't even tell me -- she left me a lousy note, that's it. I'm not even worth being told in person.'' ''Come on, Chris -- if Jessie HAD told you in person, you probably would have tried to tie her to the bed to keep her from going.'' ''Yeah, you're damn right I would have! She has no business going off on this wild goose chase -- especially after knowing that I was dead set against it!'' ''Chris -- Jessie was so torn about this -- she felt she needed to help her family. Can't you just trust her judgment?'' ''Not on this.'' Chris says. ''So what, are you just gonna end it with her because she didn't follow your orders?'' ''I don't know what I'm gonna do, Eve -- and I'm too mad to even think about it right now. I've gotta get to the OR before Boardman orders my head on a platter.'' Chris leaves the room, passing Patrick as he leaves, and not saying a word. ''What's with him?'' Patrick asks Eve. ''I mean, not that he ever talks to me anyway, but --'' ''Jessie went to Europe.'' Eve says. ''Oh.'' Patrick replies. ''I take it he didn't approve.'' ''That's putting it mildly.'' Eve replies. ''Listen -- I've got some free time this morning, and I haven't had breakfast yet --- you want to go grab a bite to eat with me?'' ''I'd love to, but -- I haven't finished rounds yet.'' Eve tells him. ''Eve -- you're not upset about last night, are you?'' ''Of course not.'' ''I just think we should take things, slowly -- I guess I'm kind of old-fashioned.'' Patrick tells her. ''I've noticed.'' Eve says, feeling a bit awkward. ''I mean -- I know you've probably got a lot more experience than I do, and --'' ''What's that supposed to mean?'' Eve asks, suddenly becoming defensive. ''Nothing, just -- I haven't really had many girlfriends -- Carrie was my first serious relationship, and -- I'm not really good at this dating thing. And I'm just assuming -- well, you're smart, you're pretty -- you've probably had a few boyfriends, so it's not as awkward for you.'' Patrick says. ''Oh. Yeah, I've --- had a few boyfriends.'' Eve says, feeling more and more uncomfortable with the conversation. ''It's okay -- it's not like there's anything wrong with it. I mean, come on, it's not like you've had hundreds of guys casually parading in and out of your life -- you wouldn't do that.'' Patrick says. He walks over to her and kisses her on the cheek. ''Well, I better let you get back to your rounds. I'll call you tonight, okay?'' ''Yeah -- okay.'' Eve says. Patrick smiles at her as he leaves. Eve starts crying as soon as he walks out the door.
Kevin is down in the hotel lobby, talking to the concierge. Just before he turns around to leave, someone comes up behind him. ''Surprise.'' Jessie says. Kevin turns around and sighs. ''I told you to stay home.'' he says. ''Since when do I listen?'' Jessie asks. ''Not since I've known you. Come here.'' Kevin says, pulling her into a hug. ''How are you?'' ''I'm fine. I've got another surprise for you, too.'' Jessie tells him. ''Please don't tell me you brought Ramsey with you.'' Kevin says. ''No, Chris -- is at home. But I did bring someone.'' Just then, Kevin sees Victor in the lobby, holding Daniel. ''Monk, there you are! Jessie and I have been looking all over for you!'' Victor shouts. ''Let me guess -- you knew about this.'' Kevin says. ''Mary called me right after Jessie left.'' Victor says. ''I wanted to surprise you -- and Lucy.'' Jessie tells him, as Kevin takes Daniel from Victor. ''Lucy will be thrilled. But, Jessie -- it's just not safe -- and now I have my son to protect as well, and --'' Kevin begins. ''And that's why I'm here. I'm hiring extra security to stay with Lucy and Daniel, while we're out looking for Ryan.'' Jessie says. ''We're?'' Kevin says. ''Jessie -- you need to go home. I'm not putting anyone else at risk here.'' ''Sorry -- you're stuck with me. Come on, Kevin -- you know I'll be a big help.'' Kevin sighs. ''Well, at least it gets you away from that jerk you're dating for awhile -- maybe distance will help you see things more clearly.'' Kevin comments. ''Don't start on Chris -- I'm not here to argue my life with you, I'm here to help you find your daughter. Now -- what do you want me to do?'' Jessie asks. ''Well, let's get you settled first -- and take someone to see his mommy.'' Kevin says, smiling at Daniel. ''Okay -- let's go.'' Jessie replies, and they head to the hotel rooms.
Chris enters the OR, where Dr. Boardman and the rest of his team is waiting. ''Well -- nice of you to finally join us, Ramsey.'' he remarks. ''I'm sorry, sir -- it won't happen again.'' Chris says. ''It better not.'' Boardman replies. He turns to one of the nurses who also just walked in before Chris. ''Who are you?'' he asks. ''My name is Kim Keil -- I'm a new OR nurse, I've only been here for a few days. I'm really glad to be on your team, Dr. Boardman -- I've heard so many good things about you.'' the nurse replies. ''Of course you have.'' Dr. Boardman says. ''And you're late.'' ''I' m so sorry -- I'm still learning my way around here. It won't happen again, and I promise you won't be disappointed in my work.'' the nurse says. ''I doubt it -- the only decent surgical nurse in this hospital is out of town right now -- you'll be lucky if you're 1/10 as professional as she is. Now, are we going to stand around here and chat all day or are we going to get to work.'' ''Yes sir.'' the nurse says, appearing quite uncomfortable. ''Welcome to hell.'' Chris says to the nurse under his breath, as they begin to prepare the OR.
Kevin walks into his hotel room, carrying Daniel. He sees Lucy standing by the window, looking very sad. ''Lucy.'' Kevin says. ''Doc, I was just --'' Lucy begins, turning around. ''Is -- is that --'' ''He missed you.'' Kevin says. ''Oh, Kevin -- how did you -- oh, give him to me.'' Lucy says, tears welling up in her eyes. ''Hi Lucy.'' Jessie says, entering the room. ''Jessie! Oh my gosh, did you --'' Lucy begins. ''I knew how much you missed him -- and he missed you, too.'' Jessie tells her. ''I know you want to be here for Dom, Lucy -- but I think maybe you should just stay here in the hotel, with Daniel, and let us look for Ryan. Then we can all bring her home together.'' Kevin tells her. ''But Doc, I want to help, and --'' Lucy begins. ''I'll help him, Lucy. Daniel needs his mommy.'' Jessie interrupts. Lucy goes over to Jessie and hugs her. ''Thank you -- thank you so very very much for bringing him here.'' Lucy tells her. ''It's okay -- and don't worry -- we're gonna find Dominique, and soon. I promise.'' Jessie replies.
Chris is eating lunch, alone, and the OR nurse he met earlier enters the cafeteria. She sees Chris and approaches him. ''Dr. Ramsey -- hello.'' Kim says, with a smile on her face. Chris barely looks up. ''Hi.'' he says, uninterested. ''You did a great job in surgery today -- I just wanted to tell you that.'' Chris doesn't say a word. ''You do remember me, right? I'm one of the new OR nurses -- Kim Keil.'' ''Yeah, I remember.'' Chris replies. ''You look kind of upset -- is something wrong?'' Chris hesitates for a moment. ''No, nothing.'' he replies. ''Well then -- would you mind some company? I don't really know many of the staff members yet, and --'' ''Yeah, sure -- why not. Have a seat.'' Chris tells her. ''Boy, that Dr. Boardman sure is a piece of work -- is he always like that?'' Kim asks. ''Actually, he was in a pretty good mood today. You haven't seen anything yet. The only one on the OR team that he's ever decent to is --'' Chris stops. ''Is who?'' Kim asks. ''Nobody. Forget I said anything.'' Chris says. ''Okay.'' Kim says, trying to change the subject. ''So -- how long have you been working here?'' ''A little over four years now.'' ''And let me guess -- your goal is to eventually have Boardman's job.'' ''Actually my goal is to have Dr. Quartermaine's job -- but I guess Boardman's position would be a nice stepping stone.'' Chris tells her. ''How about you -- how long have you been an RN?'' ''About four years -- I was working in a really small community hospital in Delaware -- I wanted to get out of there, so I just started applying anywhere and everywhere. I had several interviews, but -- General Hospital has such a good reputation, and they offered me the best position. So I took it.'' ''Well, it's nice to have you aboard.'' Chris says. ''Thanks.'' Kim replies. ''Hey -- do you have any plans tonight?'' Chris hesitates for a moment. ''No -- not a thing.'' he replies. ''Well, I hope I'm not being too forward here, but -- well I really don't know that many people, and -- I hate going out to dinner all by myself, so -- what do you say?'' Again, Chris hesitates. ''Who's paying?'' he finally asks. Kim laughs. ''Well, I did the asking -- it is the 21st century, you know.'' Kim replies. ''Okay then -- dinner sounds good. My shift ends in two hours -- how about I meet you in the lobby, and we'll head out from there.'' ''Okay.'' Kim says. ''See you then.'' Chris says, and he leaves. ''I can hardly wait.'' Kim says, smiling as she watches Chris walk away.
June 25, 2001 -- ''Are you sure? Okay. Thanks Paolo.'' Jessie says, hanging up the phone. ''Kevin -- I think we found him.'' Jessie says. ''Jessie, no offense, but you've had all of your friends combing the entire country, and every lead of theirs has been a dead end.'' Kevin tells her. ''That's because he's not IN Italy, Kevin -- he's in France.'' Jessie says. ''France -- that's where I --'' ''Grew up.'' Jessie says. ''Ryan wants your life -- what better way to get it than to go back to where you lived when you were young?'' ''Who's this Paolo character you were talking to?'' ''A friend of mine from California -- he's been living in Italy the past three years, and I've asked him to keep his eyes open. He was in Nice on business -- and he saw someone that looked an awful lot like Ryan.'' ''Is he sure?'' Kevin asks. ''We'll never know if we don't go check it out for ourselves.'' Jessie says. ''No -- I'll go check it out.'' ''Kevin --'' ''Look, you've already had your life in jeopardy twice because of Ryan -- I'm not willing to make it happen a third time. You're staying here with Lucy. Just give me the details, and I'll leave for Nice today -- alone.'' ''Shouldn't Victor go with you -- and the police should --'' ''Jessie -- I need to do this alone. I think that's been our biggest problem -- too many people -- Ryan sees us coming a mile away and runs. This time it's just me.'' Kevin says. ''You're not telling Lucy, are you?'' Jessie asks. ''I don't want to get her hopes up -- I need to do this by myself.'' ''Okay -- I'll get you Paolo's address and number -- I hope you know what you're doing.'' Jessie says. ''I know I do.'' Kevin tells her.
Kevin approaches the house -- it's an old house, in a very secluded area, and looks abandoned from the outside. Cautiously, Kevin opens the door to the house. The inside looks lived in -- but no electricity -- it is well lit by oil lamps. ''Ryan.'' Kevin calls out. ''Ryan, I know you're here -- I want my daughter, and I'm not leaving without her.'' No answer. ''You think you're pretty smart, don't you? And pretty arrogant -- you know, if I didn't know any better, I'd say you arranged for me to find you here -- you just can't stay hidden, can you? Your ego won't let you. Don't forget Ryan -- I'm your other half. I know how you think.'' ''Do you really?'' a voice calls out. ''Who's the one with the ego here, bro?'' Kevin starts to look around the room. ''What's wrong? I'm right over here, Kevin -- come and get me.'' Kevin looks down the hallway, and sees a figure approaching. Kevin starts to move toward him, then stops. ''Oh, did I forget to mention -- I have someone here with me.'' Ryan says, holding Dominique in his arms. ''Give her to me.'' Kevin says. ''I don't think so. You see -- she's happy with me. She never cries, she never fusses -- and she‘s always smiling. I found someone who actually LIKES me, Kevin -- if you think I'm gonna let that go, you're the one who's crazy.'' ''She's just a baby, Ryan -- she deserves --'' ''She deserves what? A parent who loves her? Who will take care of her? Who will never hurt her? Didn't I deserve those things? Oh, but YOU were the one who got them -- while I got stuck being raised by the psycho-mother from HELL!'' Ryan shouts. ''By the way, where is dear old dad? Cause I've got a bone or two to pick with him as well.'' ''Victor doesn't know I'm here.'' Kevin says. ''It's just the two of us.'' ''You were supposed to help me, Kevin -- you knew what mother was doing -- I thought you would help me.'' ''I tried Ryan -- but I was just a little boy. I didn't know what to do.'' ''What about when you got older? Why didn't you try to find me? Did you think that you could just forget that I ever existed?'' ''I never forgot you, Ryan -- not ever. You're my brother -- you're my twin.'' ''And I deserve what you had -- I don't think that's too much to ask.'' Ryan says. ''Ryan -- I'll get you help. I promise -- I'll get you into the best facility I can find -- you'll have the best doctors -- maybe I can even bring Dom to visit you -- it's obvious she really likes you.'' ''She does, doesn't she?'' Ryan says, looking down at the baby and smiling. ''She's such a good baby -- you know she's starting to talk already. She calls me 'daddy' all the time --'' ''I'M her father, Ryan! She should be saying that to ME!'' Kevin shouts angrily. ''You and Lucy can have other children -- don't you get it? We need each other.'' ''Ryan, you need help. I told you -- I'll do anything --'' ''You will? Really?'' Ryan says, acting sincerely touched. ''Yes. I promise -- you'll be taken care of -- I'll see to it personally.'' ''You'd do that for me?'' Ryan asks, still acting sincere. ''Of course I would -- you're my brother.'' Kevin says. ''Now, just give me Dominique -- and then we can talk.'' ''If you're lying to me, Kevin --'' ''I wouldn't lie to you -- I swear.'' Kevin says. ''No, you wouldn't, would you.'' Ryan says. He starts to walk closer to Kevin, the baby still in his arms. Finally he comes face to face with Kevin, and starts to hand Dominique over to him. Kevin happily reaches out for the little girl, then gets an odd look on his face and starts to collapse to the ground, as Ryan takes the baby back, and drops an empty syringe on the floor next to Kevin. ''That's too bad -- because I would.'' Ryan says, looking down at Kevin, lying unconscious on the ground. ''Say goodbye to your Uncle Kevin, sweetheart -- I'm afraid it's the last time you're gonna see him.'' Ryan walks over to one of the oil lamps, and knocks it over, the flame slowly traveling across the floor.
Chris and Kim enter the house, unable to keep their hands off of each other. ''You sure this is where you live?'' Kim asks. ''I haven't had THAT much to drink -- I don't think.'' Chris says, obviously quite drunk. ''Well, no offense, but how drunk were you when you decorated this place -- I feel like I'm having some kind of bad 80's flashback.'' ''This wasn't my doing -- I've got much better taste.'' Chris says, heading for the minibar. ''Do you like martinis -- how about I whip us up a batch?'' Kim tries to stop him. ''I think you've had enough.'' she says. ''Oh, no -- you can never get enough of this -- trust me.'' Chris says, and he starts to make a batch of martinis. When he finishes, he hands her a glass, and starts to pour her a drink. He ends up spilling it on her blouse. ''I am SO sorry!'' he says. ''It's okay.'' Kim says, laughing. ''Do you have anything I can change into?'' ''In the bedroom -- just take whatever you want.'' Chris says, pouring himself a martini and downing it rather quickly. Kim goes into the bedroom, opens the closet, and finds an entire woman's wardrobe. She finds a shirt, and grabs it, putting it on, then goes back into the living room. ''Chris -- is there something I should know about you? I mean, your closet is full of women's clothes.'' Kim says. ''Oh, I forgot, my stuff is in the other room -- there's no room for it in there, she hogs every damn bit of space there is.'' Chris mumbles. ''Who?'' Kim asks. ''Nobody that matters.'' Chris says. ''Chris -- do you have a girlfriend you're not telling me about?'' Kim asks. ''Who, me? I don't have anyone, baby -- except for you, of course.'' he replies, reaching for her and kissing her. ''You -- are one sexy lady.'' he says. ''You're pretty handsome yourself.'' Kim tells him. Chris pours himself another martini, and downs it quickly, then turns and takes Kim in his arms. ''You know, I've -- I've always preferred brunettes for some reason. But you -- you're different.'' Chris kisses her again, and leads her into the bedroom. He throws her onto the bed, and Kim begins to undress him. ''Are you sure about this?'' Kim asks. ''Do I look like I'm not?'' Chris asks. Kim smiles. ''You know, I -- I noticed you the first day I saw you. You were so tall and sexy -- and then when I saw you at work -- these beautiful surgeon's hands -- you really are incredible.'' Kim says, taking his hands and kissing them. ''That's not all they can do.'' Chris says, and he pulls off her shirt, as she runs her hands up and down his chest. Just then, the phone rings, but Chris ignores it. The machine comes on, and a message is left: Chris -- please pick up if you're there. I know you're mad at me -- Chris, please pick up. Please, honey -- I miss you. I think we're getting closer to finding Dom -- look, I don't have a number to give you at the moment, but I'll call you as soon as I do. I promise, I won't be gone much longer. I love you, Chris. Chris suddenly stops, pushing Kim away. ''I can't do this.'' he tells her. ''Mmmm -- why not?'' Kim asks, still in a very seductive mood. ''I thought you said you didn't have a girlfriend.'' she says. ''Look -- I made a mistake. I thought I could --'' ''You thought you could what?'' Kim asks, kissing
him on the neck. ''If she cares about you so much -- how come I'm the one
here?'' Kim kisses him on the lips, hard. ''If she walked out on you --
she doesn't deserve you.'' she whispers seductively, and pushes him down
on the bed . . . . . .
Chapter 24 Ryan races out of the old house, carrying Dominique in his arms. He sees Kevin's car off in the distance, and heads toward it. ''Oops, forgot to grab Uncle Kevin's keys. It's okay though -- have I ever demonstrated my hot wiring skills to you? Your daddy's a man of many talents.'' Ryan tells Dom, grinning. He sets her in the car seat that Kevin set up for her, and gets into the drivers seat, proceeding to try to start to the car. After a few minutes, Ryan still struggles, frustrated. ''Don't worry, sweetheart -- daddy will take care of everything.'' Ryan tells her nervously. ''You're absolutely right.'' a voice says from behind him. Ryan turns around and sees Kevin sitting in the back seat. ''How ---'' ''You're not the only one who came prepared, Ryan.'' Kevin says. ''You wouldn't believe the stuff Victor can come up with for protection -- bullet-proof vests, padding that can't be penetrated -- I knew you'd try and pull exactly what you did -- we're twins, remember. I know your every move. Oh, and did I mention that our father used to have a career in international espionage?'' Kevin asks. ''Clever. I'm impressed -- you actually had me fooled. Looks like you're more like me than you'd care to admit.'' Ryan comments. ''But you're forgetting something -- we're out in the middle of nowhere. Alone. You're no match for me, bro -- you never were.'' ''Try me.'' Kevin says. ''Do you think I was dumb enough to come out here without backup? There are police on the way, Ryan -- all exits from this place are already blocked. It's over -- you're not going anywhere -- except to prison.'' ''You'd do that to me?'' Ryan asks innocently. ''I gave you a chance, Ryan -- I was sincere, about getting you help. You just wouldn't believe me. And now you've lost -- you'll never see Dominique again.'' Kevin says. ''Hell, you'll never see daylight again.'' Ryan turns and sees a stream of police cars approaching, as Kevin takes Dominique out of the car seat and leaves the car. ''You don't have anywhere to go, Ryan -- face it -- you lose.'' Kevin leaves the car with Dom, as Ryan frantically tries to get the car to start by hot wiring it. As the police approach, Ryan finally gets the car to start, and drives off frantically, as a high speed police chase ensues. Kevin stands off, holding Dom in his arms, as he watches nervously. One of the police cars pulls up next to Kevin. It stops, and the officer steps out, with Lucy and Victor. They race toward Kevin. ''Oh, my baby!'' Lucy shouts, reaching out for Dominique. Lucy is in tears as she hold both Dom and Kevin close. ''It's okay, Lucy -- she's safe now. It's over.'' ''It won't be over until they catch that monster.'' Lucy says, not letting go of Dominique for a second. ''The police are handling it, Lucy -- they'll stop him.'' Victor insists. ''Monk -- why did you do this without telling anyone? I knew you were up to something, but -- to not let us know until an hour ago --'' ''I had to do it this way, Victor -- I knew it was the only way I could trick Ryan.'' Kevin insists. ''Where's Daniel?'' ''He's down at the police station with Jessie, she's watching him and waiting for us.'' Victor tells him. ''I bet you can't wait to see your brother.'' Lucy tells Dom. ''He's missed you -- we've all missed you. Oh Doc, I don't ever want to let her go again.'' ''I know, Lucy -- maybe we should go, and let the police handle this.'' Kevin suggests. ''You're probably right -- whatever happens to Ryan now -- it's out of our hands.'' Victor says.
The police continue in pursuit of Ryan, who continues to speed up. More police cars come at him from another direction. He swerves to the side, causing several of the police cars to collide into one another. Laughing wickedly as he glances back to look at the wreckage, he starts to lose control of his car. He tries to regain control, but is unable, and the car swerves off the road, and over the side of the mountainous road. It rolls down the hillside, bursting into flames as it hits the bottom . . . . .
June 26, 2001 -- Chris wakes up, his head throbbing. He starts to sit up, and feels someone reach out for him. ''Good morning.'' a woman's voice whispers. He turns around, and finds Kim in bed with him, wearing one of Jessie's negligees. ''What are you doing here?'' Chris asks. ''You said you wanted me to stay.'' Kim says, moving toward him and kissing him. Chris pushes her away. ''Where'd you get that?'' Chris asks, looking her up and down. ''I found it in the closet -- you said I could wear whatever I wanted.'' Kim says. ''You want some breakfast?'' ''No.'' Chris says, getting up. ''I think you should go.'' ''Okay -- you probably have to get ready for work, huh? By the way -- you are absolutely incredible.'' Kim says, leaning behind him and whispering in his ear. She goes into the bathroom, as Chris sits on the edge of the bed. ''Oh god, what have I done?'' he says to himself. After a few minutes, Kim comes back out, fully dressed. ''So -- you think we can see each other tonight?'' Kim asks. ''I -- I don't know.'' Chris replies. ''Look -- Kim -- you're a really nice person. But -- I don't think --'' ''Hey -- I understand. If you need some time to think about things, that's fine.'' Kim says. She comes closer to Chris, and kisses him softly on the lips. ''I really did have fun last night.'' she whispers. ''I'll see you at work.'' Kim leaves the bedroom, then glances over at the answering machine on the desk in the living room. There's one message on it -- the message Jessie left the night before. Kim casually walks over to the machine, and deletes the message. ''Oops.'' she giggles, and smiles to herself happily as she leaves.
Kevin, Lucy, and Victor arrive at the police station. Lucy is carrying Dom in her arms. Jessie sees them coming from the waiting room. ''Oh my god.'' she says. ''You found her!'' she shouts, carrying Daniel and racing toward them. ''She's okay.'' Lucy says, sitting down, and grabbing Daniel, holding both children. ''I have my babies back, and my husband, and -- I just want to go home now.'' ''We will -- as soon as things are settled here, we'll be on the first plane home.'' Kevin tells her. ''How about I get us a private plane -- I just need to make a couple of calls.'' Jessie suggests. ''That's really not necessary, Jess.'' Kevin tells her. ''Oh please, it's the least I can do -- besides it'll get us out of here faster, and I -- I have some personal things to deal with.'' ''Personal as in Chris Ramsey personal -- I'm not up for discussing this right now Jess, but when we get home, we need to talk.'' Kevin tells her. ''Fine, whatever -- let's just get things settled here, make sure Ryan is locked up where he belongs, and get home.'' Jessie says. ''Dr. Collins -- I'm afraid I have some bad news. It's about your brother.'' an officer says, walking into the room. ''He didn't get away, did he? Kevin, that monster can't have gotten away!'' Lucy shouts, panicked. ''I'm afraid not -- he lost control of his car and -- it went over a cliff. I'm sorry -- there was nothing we could do.'' the officer tells them. Kevin looks down sadly. ''I really wanted to help him.'' Kevin says. ''He was beyond help, Monk -- and if anyone is to blame, it's me.'' Victor tells him. ''I should have gone back for him. None of this ever would have happened if I had done everything I could to take him away from your mother.'' ''Victor -- you're not to blame. Nobody is. I honestly think Ryan would have been Ryan no matter what -- some things just can't be helped.'' Kevin tells him. ''Come on -- let's just finalize everything here and go home. I just want my life back.'' Kevin reaches over and hugs Lucy and the twins.
Eve walks into the oncall room, where Chris is sitting at the table, nursing a cup of coffee. Eve tosses down a pile of files on the table. ''Geez, Lambert, do you have to be so LOUD?'' Chris asks, pressing his palm up to his forehead. ''What's the matter Ramsey, have one martini too many last night?'' Eve teases. ''Don't ask.'' Chris tells her. ''You know Chris, instead of behaving like an immature idiot, have you ever considered talking to Jessie when she calls you and trying to work this out like rational adults instead of solving your problems with a pity party and a bottle of booze?'' ''I'm getting relationship advice from the poster child for Pathetic Love Lifes Anonymous? Gimme a break!'' Chris says. ''I'm just saying that maybe you should talk to Jessie before behaving like a moron! I know she's called you, Chris -- I know her. She's probably called every day, and you don't even bother picking up the phone. You'd rather just sit and stew than admit you were WRONG!'' ''I was NOT wrong! Chamberlain is a walking time bomb -- and Jessie walked right into his path! And for your information, she didn't even call me yesterday -- she could be dead for all I know.'' ''Do you love her, Chris?'' Eve asks. ''I don't know what I feel right now.'' ''It's not a multiple choice question -- you either love her or you don't. Which is it?'' ''YES, I love her! Why do you think I'm so damned pissed off right now!'' ''Who are you mad at -- Jessie or yourself?'' ''What's that supposed to mean?'' Chris asks. ''Something's up with you, Ramsey -- if I didn't know better, I'd swear you're trying to hide something more than just a hangover.'' ''Don't you have anything better to do than to interrogate me? Why don't you go find your lab rat boyfriend and pester him?'' ''Oh yeah, you're definitely hiding something -- and it'll come out Chris. Whatever it is -- you always get caught. Don't forget that.'' Eve says, and she leaves the room. Chris goes over to the coffee-maker and pours himself another cup, then leans back against the counter and sighs, frustrated.
Eve enters the lab, where Patrick is fervently working. ''Hey you.'' Eve says, walking up behind him and kissing him softly on the cheek. ''Hey.'' Patrick says, barely noticing her. ''My shift just ended -- I thought we'd go grab dinner.'' Eve tells him. ''Yeah, fine.'' Patrick says, still pouring over his notes intensely. ''And then I thought after that maybe we could go to the local strip club -- it's 'Ladies Night', and I volunteered you to perform. How does that sound?'' ''Sounds good.'' Patrick says. Frustrated, Eve pulls his notes away. ''Hey!'' he shouts. ''You haven't heard a word I've said since I walked into this room!'' Eve complains. ''I'm sorry -- I've come across this new study that I just can't get my mind off of.'' ''What's it about?'' Eve asks. ''Well, my main area of research has always been cancer, but --- Dr. Baldwin asked me to do some preliminary research on one of her patients. It's a male, mid-40's, has a long-time history of emotional disorder, since he was a teen. He developed skin cancer, and they started him on this new treatment. It's working -- but not just on his cancer. It's also affecting his mental state -- for the better. It HAS to be the treatment -- for someone who's had a history of mental instability to come out of such a trying life situation with an IMPROVEMENT in their mental well-being -- it just doesn't make any sense.'' ''So what does Gail want you to do?'' Eve asks. ''I'm gonna try and pinpoint the exact component of the drug that's causing his emotional situation to improve, and see what happens from there. Do you realize what kind of a wonder drug this could be if I could develop it, Eve? Do you know how many people suffer from emotional disorders that show little to no improvement for the rest of their lives? THIS is why I got into research, Eve -- there's still so much out there that we don't know, and so many people out there we can help.'' ''You are so amazing.'' Eve says. ''Hey, maybe you can use Chris as a guinea pig -- God knows he needs all the help he can get.'' ''What'd he do now?'' ''I have no idea -- but he's hiding something. Something big. I just know it.'' ''Well -- how about we worry about my brother later? I think I need to make up to you for ignoring you just a few minutes ago.'' ''Yeah, you better believe you do.'' Eve says. ''I don't like to be ignored.'' ''Well -- how about we go out to dinner. You'll have my full attention, I promise.'' ''Sounds good to me.'' Eve says, and they leave together.
June 27, 2001 -- late morning. Chris has just finished changing in the OR after surgery and is getting ready to leave when someone grabs him from behind. ''You never called me last night.'' a voice whispers. Chris turns around, startled to see Kim standing next to him. ''What are you doing here?'' Chris asks. ''Don't worry -- nobody saw us. I don't know how the hospital brass feels about workplace relationships, so -- if you want to keep things quiet about us --'' ''Kim -- I thought I made it clear last night -- you're very nice, but -- it was just a one time thing. I'm sorry.'' Chris tells her. ''You -- you don't like me, do you?'' ''No, it's not that -- hey, if we had met at a different time, then maybe -- maybe things would be different. But my life is really complicated right now. I hope we can just be friends.'' Kim hesitates for a moment. ''Sure -- why not.'' Kim says. ''I mean, we do work together -- it's always easier if you get along with your co-workers, right?'' ''Right.'' Chris says. ''And -- about the other night -- that's just between us, right?'' Chris says. ''I won't tell a soul.'' Kim replies. ''I promise.'' ''Good. Well, I'll see you around.'' Chris says, and he leaves the room. Kim stands in the room, alone. ''Count on it.'' Kim says to herself, smiling.
Later that afternoon, Chris is in the oncall room at his locker, when he feels someone touch his shoulder from behind. ''I thought I told you not to --'' Chris stops when he turns around and sees Jessie in front of him. ''Not to what?'' Jessie asks. Chris gets a look on his face that expresses many emotions -- relief, nervousness, anger -- he remains quiet for a moment, trying to think of what to say. ''You're home.'' he finally says. ''I thought I'd surprise you.'' Jessie tells him. ''If you even care anymore -- you must be pretty mad at me, huh?'' ''You could say that.'' Chris says, closing his locker, and sitting down on the couch. Jessie sits down next to him. ''You okay?'' he asks. ''Fine.'' Jessie replies. ''Did you find Dominique?'' ''She's with her parents -- they're home.'' Jessie says. ''And -- Ryan?'' Chris asks. ''He won't bother anyone anymore -- he's dead, Chris.'' ''Well, good riddance.'' Chris says. The room then fills with an awkward silence. ''So, is this what it's gonna be like? Two or three word questions and answers and that's it?'' ''What do you want me to say, Jess? I asked you not to leave -- you left. You didn't even tell me you left -- you left a NOTE!'' ''I called you every day -- you just didn't bother to answer or call back.'' Jessie says. ''And say what? Not what you wanted to hear.'' Chris says. ''Chris -- can't we just put this behind us, and start over?'' Jessie asks. ''Let's see, that'd be HOW many times starting over now? Three? Four? I seem to have lost count somewhere.'' Chris remarks sarcastically. ''Look -- I know we're different. We're about as different as they come. But there's something about us Chris, that's real. And no matter what our differences are, you can't deny that.'' Jessie takes Chris' hand. ''We love each other, Chris -- we were meant to be together. And we've both made our share of mistakes. I was just hoping that just this one time -- we can just put all of those stupid mistakes behind us and start with a clean slate. What do you say?'' Jessie asks. Chris has a brief memory of he and Kim at the house, kissing. He closes his eyes for a moment in deep regret. ''Okay.'' he finally whispers. ''I guess I can forgive you this time.'' ''You mean that?'' Jessie asks, surprised at his answer. ''Just promise you won't do that to me again.'' Chris tells her. ''I won't -- I swear, I won't.'' Jessie says. She hugs Chris tightly. ''Did you miss me?'' Chris kisses her on the lips gently. ''More than you'll ever know.'' he says. ''Hey -- who did you think was coming up behind you earlier, anyway?'' ''Oh -- Eve's been bugging me about something every five minutes -- usually some stupid thing about Patrick that she wants advice on. I was getting tired of it, so I told her to leave me alone.'' Chris says, making up the first answer he can think of that Jessie will believe. ''Well, maybe I should talk to her.'' Jessie says. ''No!'' Chris says insistently. ''I mean -- let Eve solve her own problems for once in her life. It's about time she did, anyway. Come on, let's go home -- we've got some time to make up for.'' ''Oh, really? Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but -- I came here straight for the airport and I'm beat. I really didn't plan on anything for this evening but taking a nice hot bath and getting into bed.'' ''See, that was my plan, too -- and you say we're nothing alike.'' Chris says, and he kisses her on the neck as they walk out of the oncall room together.
June 29, 2001 -- ''What are you so nervous about?'' Eve asks, as Patrick tries to organize his notes in the lab office. ''Eve, this guy is one of the most important pharmaceutical reps out there -- if I can get his company to fund my research -- how do I look?'' Patrick asks. ''Nervous. Calm down -- come on, you must have talked with hundreds of these reps before.'' ''Not for research in this field. And I've been away from the work for so long -- I can't believe how much I've had to catch up on. It's like I was gone an eternity.'' ''You'll do fine.'' Eve says. ''I wish I had your confidence.'' Patrick says. Just then, the door opens, and a man with grey hair in a business suit walks in. ''Dr. Reardon?'' the man asks. ''Yes -- you must be Mr. Howe.'' Patrick says, shaking his hand. Eve takes a close look at the man and instantly becomes nervous. ''I'm Patrick Reardon -- this is a colleague of mine, Dr. Evelyn Lambert.'' The man immediately recognizes Eve. ''Dr. Lambert -- nice to see you.'' Mr. Howe says. ''Have you two met before?'' Patrick asks. ''Oh, we --'' Mr. Howe begins. ''No -- I -- we haven't.'' Eve says, clearly nervous. ''Okay. Well, I've got some notes I wanted to show you -- oh, and I left the chart in the other room, let me go get it, I'll be right back. Eve, can you stay here for a minute?'' Patrick asks. ''Sure.'' Eve says. Patrick leaves the room. ''Don't tell me you don't recognize me, Eve.'' Mr. Howe says. Eve is quiet. ''Come on, Eve -- I was one of your best clients. You always said you wanted to be a doctor someday -- looks like you were successful. Congratulations.'' ''Please -- don't tell --'' ''Hey, I'm not gonna say anything. You look great by the way.'' Mr. Howe tells her. ''Then again, you always did.'' he says, trying to touch her cheek as Eve flinches. Patrick comes back in the room. ''Sorry about that -- I thought I had this out here.'' Patrick says. ''Don't worry -- Dr. Lambert and I were just getting better acquainted.'' Mr. Howe says. ''Good. Well, are you ready to discuss this?'' Patrick asks. ''Sure. Show me what you have.'' Mr. Howe tells him. The two men start discussing Patrick's research, as Eve slowly slinks out of the room, looking very upset.
''He's been very upset lately -- I'm sure seeing you will calm him down a bit.'' the nurse tells Kevin. ''I hope so.'' Kevin replies, as he enters Greg's room. ''Hey, Greg -- how are you?'' Kevin asks. ''You promised you'd take care of me. You PROMISED!'' Greg shouts angrily. ''I'm here, aren't I?'' Kevin asks. ''Where have you been? It's been a MONTH -- where the hell have you been, huh?'' Greg asks. ''I had things to deal with, Greg -- it's not that I didn't want to be here. I just couldn't. But everything's back to normal now. I should be able to come here more often.'' Kevin says. ''Why should I believe you?'' ''Because I want to help you, Greg.'' Greg looks away from him. ''It's true -- you're my family, I care about you, and I want to help.'' ''You don't even believe that I'm your brother, do you?'' Greg asks. ''Well, there's one way to find out for sure -- if you're willing.'' Kevin tells him. ''And what if I'm not really your brother -- then what?'' ''I made you a promise, Greg -- one that I intend to keep. I promised I'd get you help, and I'm gonna do that. It doesn't matter what a DNA test says.'' Greg is quiet for a minute. ''Okay. But you need to come here more. Not just once a month.'' ''I will. I promise.'' Kevin tells him.
June 30, 2001 -- Chris enters the house. He notices the extra place setting at the dinner table. ''Hey -- are we having company tonight?'' Chris asks Jessie as he comes up from behind and kisses her on the cheek. ''Yeah -- a new co-worker. She's new in town and hasn't made many friends yet, so I invited her to dinner. She's in the other room.'' Jessie tells him, and Chris rolls his eyes. ''Do you have to take in every damn stray on staff that you meet?'' ''Chris, I'm only trying to be nice. How would you like to be a stranger in town, with no friends, no family -- it's not easy.'' ''I was four years ago -- and you didn't see me mooching off of every schmuck on staff willing to offer me a free meal.'' ''That's cause nobody was willing to offer -- face it Chris, your social skills need improvement. You need to learn to get along better with the staff. Be nice for once.'' ''It better not be another janitor that only speaks about a dozen words in English. Remember that fun evening, Jess?'' Chris asks. ''Just finish setting the table, and try not
to be TOO rude.'' Jessie says. Chris reluctantly grabs the glasses, and
heads toward the dining area with them, just as the door across the hall
opens. ''Hey -- Chris, this is our guest. Kim, this is my boyfriend, Dr.
Chris Ramsey.'' Chris looks up in shock as he sees Kim entering the dining
area, and drops the glasses he's carrying as a look of nervousness comes
across his face . . . . . . . .
