Chapter 21

May 30, 2001 -- morning.  Eve awakens in Patrick's arms.  She looks up at him as he sleeps, and sighs as she shifts her weight a bit in his arms.  Patrick awakens, and looks down at Eve, smiling.  "Hey -- good morning." Patrick says quietly.  "How'd you sleep?"

"Fine.  I don't think I've slept this soundly without a sedative since -- since everything happened." Eve tells him.  "I didn't think you'd stay here all night."

"I guess I dozed off myself." Patrick says, getting up.  "I'm gonna call the hospital to find out how
Jessie is doing."

"Yeah -- that's a good idea." Eve says, thinking about the kiss Patrick gave her the night before.
"Patrick." she says.  Patrick turns around.  "Thank you -- for being such a good friend."

"You're welcome." Patrick says, half-smiling.  He leaves the room, leans up against the wall and sighs, clearly unsure about what his feeling are regarding the night before.

Eve enters Jessie's hospital room, where Chris is sitting in the chair next to her bed.  "Hey - how is
she doing?" Eve asks.  Chris looks up at her.

"She hasn't woken up yet.  Eve, she should be awake by now.  Her vitals are stable, and -- they did a CT scan this morning, the cranial swelling has gone down.  Why won't she wake up?" Chris asks, touching Jessie's cheek worriedly.

"I'm sure she will soon." Eve says.  "Did you get any sleep last night, you look awful."

"No, and thanks a lot." Chris says.  He glances over at Jessie again.  "She probably hasn't woken up yet because she knows I'm here."

"Chris -- I'm sure Jessie wants you to be here."

"Yeah, sure she does.  After the way I treated her, I --" Chris stops himself from continuing.  "Eve -- I haven't even done rounds yet.  Do you think maybe you can stay with her while I -- I mean, Kevin is with Lucy, and Victor is off trying to find Dominique, and -- I just don't want her to wake up all alone and scared and --"

"You still love her, don't you?" Eve asks.

"If she --when she wakes up, make sure you do a full exam, make sure she drinks plenty of fluids,
and try to keep her calm.  I don't think she should be told about Dominique yet, at least not until she's stronger.  Just make sure she gets plenty of rest and doesn't overdo it -- you know how Jessie is."

"I AM a doctor Chris, I think I know what to do.  And you never answered my question."

"Just -- stay with her.  I'll be back when I'm done with rounds."  Chris leaves the room reluctantly.

"That would be a ‘yes'." Eve says to herself.

"Doc." Lucy whispers, waking up slowly.

"I'm right here." Kevin says, squeezing her hand.

"How -- how's Jessie?" Lucy asks.

"I just checked on her about an hour ago -- she's stable, but -- she's still unconscious." Kevin tells
her.

"She'll be okay though, right?"

"I'm sure she'll be fine.  You can go see her later this afternoon if you want to." Kevin says.

"Yeah, I'd -- like that." Lucy says.  "Has Mary brought the twins over here yet?  I know you -- my
gosh, you haven't seen them in such a long time, they've grown so very very much.  Dom, she -- she
looks so much like you."

"Lucy, there's something I -- I need to tell you." Kevin says.   Just then, a nurse enters the room.

"Dr. Collins -- there's someone here to see you." the nurse says.

"Can it wait?" Kevin asks.

"I don't think so." the nurse says.

"I'll be right back." Kevin tells Lucy, and kisses her on the forehead.  He goes out into the lobby, where Mary and Victor are waiting.  Mary is holding Daniel in her arms.  Kevin walks up to her and takes the baby from her.  "My son!  Oh, my little boy -- my god, he's gotten so big." Kevin says, looking him up and down as Daniel smiles.

"He remembers you." Mary says.

"Of course he does." Kevin says.  "Victor -- are there any leads?"

"I've been on the phone all night with various contacts -- someone matching Ryan's description was
seen at an airport in Italy -- I'm heading out there to follow up on it.  Have you told Lucy yet?" Victor asks.

"I was just about to -- how do I tell her this, Victor?" Kevin asks.

"I know you'll find the right words, son.  I promise you -- I will bring my little granddaughter back home if it's the last thing I do." Victor says.  "My flight leaves soon -- I should be going."

"Thank you." Kevin says, giving Victor a hug.

"I'll be in touch." Victor says, as Kevin goes back into Lucy's room, carrying Daniel in his arms.
"Look who I've got here." Kevin says, entering the room.  Daniel lights up when he sees Lucy, and
immediately reaches out for her.

"There's my little boy!  Oh, come here, you little angel!" Lucy says, and Kevin hands Daniel to Lucy, and sits down on the edge of the bed with her.

"He's so beautiful, Lucy -- and he's gotten so big."

"I know -- he's handsome, just like his daddy." Lucy says.  "But where's Dom?  I know, you probably thought it would be better for me to see them one at a time, but -- I really want both of my babies here, Doc, so why don't you just go back out there and --"

"Lucy -- I need to tell you something.  I didn't want to tell you last night, because you had already been through enough then, and you needed to get some rest. But I have to tell you now."

"Doc -- you're scaring me.  What's going on?" Lucy asks, holding Daniel close.

"Lucy -- I don't know how to say this -- last night, before I -- before I found my way back -- Ryan went over to Victor's house.  Victor thought he was me, of course, and -- Ryan said he wanted to see the kids.  Daniel had a cold, but -- Dom was fine, and --"

"No.  No, Doc -- you bring me my little girl!" Lucy says, becoming quite agitated.

"Ryan -- said he was taking her to the park, and --"

"NO!!!!!!!" Lucy screams.  "I want my daughter!  Doc, you bring me my daughter RIGHT NOW!!!!!!"  Daniel starts to cry.  "Oh, it's okay, honey -- I'm sorry, it's okay." Lucy says to him, holding him close and rocking him back and forth.  Kevin pulls both of them close.

"Ryan won't hurt her, Lucy.  He loves children, you know Ryan loves children." Kevin says.  "Victor
already has some leads -- he's on his way to Europe right now to follow up on them."

"Europe?  That monster took my baby out of the country?  How could he do that?"

"I don't know Lucy.  We'll get her back.  As soon as you're stronger, we'll go and help Victor ourselves, alright?" Kevin says.

"We have to find her, Doc.  We have to find her before--"

"We will, Lucy.  I promise you -- we'll find her." Kevin says, holding onto her tightly.

Jessie begins to stir, groaning a bit as she slowly awakens.  Eve sits up in her chair, and starts talking
to her.  "That's it, open your eyes."  Jessie opens her eyes slowly, as her vision becomes clearer, and focuses on Eve.

"Where am I?" she asks in a weak voice.

"You're in the hospital." Eve says.  "Can you tell me your name?"

"Jessica Collins." Jessie whispers.  "Eve, what happened?"

"You know me, that's good."

"Like I could forget you." Jessie says.  "What am I doing here?"

"There was an accident at Jacks -- you were hurt.  You were in ICU last night, we moved you to a private room this morning.  You're gonna be okay." Eve tells her.  "Do you remember anything that happened?"

"I remember -- I had the nicest dream." Jessie begins, smiling as she fondly remembers.  "Chris was here --he was holding my hand and -- he told me he was sorry, and -- he loves me.  He hasn't told me he loves me since the first night we --" Jessie stops.

"He does, Jessie.  Very much."

"Is he here?  Can I see him?" Jessie asks.

"He's been here since the moment you were brought in. He had to do rounds, but -- he'll be back." Eve replies.

"You mean -- it wasn't a dream?"

"Probably not." Eve says. "I told him I'd stay with you -- he didn't want you to be alone."  Eve starts to examine Jessie.  "How are you feeling?"

"Everything hurts -- especially my chest and -- my head." Jessie tells Eve.

"Your lung collapsed -- we had to put a chest tube in.  It's gonna be there at least until tomorrow.  You've got a pretty nasty concussion, quite a few bruises, and a sizeable gash on your forehead.  It looks like it'll heal just fine though, there shouldn't be much of a scar."

"Eve -- what happened at Jacks?  I -- I don't remember." Jessie says.

"There was an explosion, Jessie -- Ryan planted a bomb."

"Oh my god, is Lucy --"

"She's fine.  She's being released tomorrow."  Jessie begins to recall her conversation with Lucy, just
prior to the explosion.

"Oh my god.  Eve -- Ryan, he -- all this time -- Eve, what happened to Kevin?  What did he do to Kevin?" Jessie becomes quite agitated.

"It's okay, it's okay -- calm down, Jess.  Kevin got away.  He's fine -- he's with Lucy."

"Are -- are you sure?" Jessie asks, calming down somewhat.

"Positive." Eve says.

"And -- and Ryan?" Jessie asks.

"He's out there somewhere.  The police are conducting an all-out manhunt now.  There are guards all over this hospital, there's no way he's getting anywhere near this place." Eve tells her.  "Cooper is dead. Kevin -- he killed him escaping."

"Oh, poor Kevin.  Everything he's been through."

"I know.  Listen, you better get some rest, or Chris is gonna have a fit.  He was acting like an
overprotective rottweiler before he left to do rounds."  Jessie smiles a bit.

"He's really that worried about me?" Jessie asks.

"Well, he didn't say it in so many words, but -- you know how Chris is.  You know, you might want to really play this up for awhile -- Chris already feels pretty lousy about everything, you could get some MAJOR pampering out of him for the next week or so, I bet."  Eve jokingly suggests.

"I'll think about it." Jessie replies, smiling.

"Jessie, can I -- can I ask you something?"

"What?"

"What do you think of Patrick?" Eve asks.  Jessie is quiet for a moment.

"What do you mean?" Jessie asks.

"I mean --" Eve begins, clearly uncomfortable, "Do you think -- he would ever --" Eve stops, and Jessie starts to smile.

"You like him." she says.

"He -- last night, he -- he kissed me.  I mean, it wasn't a real kiss, it was kind of a -- I don't know,
he probably just felt sorry for me because I've been such a damned basket case lately and --"

"Maybe he likes you, too." Jessie says.

"I doubt it."  Eve says.  "It's probably nothing --he's probably forgotten all about it by now.  Just
forget I said anything."

Patrick enters the oncall room just as Chris is about to leave.  "Hey -- I thought you were with Jessie."  Patrick says.

"I had to do rounds.  I'm going right back up there now." Chris tells him.

"I'll stop by in a little bit.  How is she doing?"

"She was -- still unconscious when I left her.  How's Eve handling all of this?"

"As well as can be expected."

"She's staying with Jess right now -- she seemed okay, but -- all of this has really taken a toll on her." Chris says.

"I know, I can tell.  Eve seems pretty tough, though."  Patrick comments.

"That's an act.  As long as that psychopath Chamberlain is still on the loose, she'll never feel
safe."

"I don't blame her."  Patrick says.  He pauses for a moment.  "Am I imagining things, or did we just have a conversation in which neither of us shouted or hurled insults at the other?"

"Yeah -- I guess we did.  By the way, I -- I really am grateful for your help yesterday -- I'd have never been able to get Jessie out of there by myself."

"I guess we can work together on some things." Patrick says.  Chris doesn't say anything, and starts to leave.  "Chris --" Patrick begins again, and Chris turns around.  "You know, I was wondering -- I'd really like to get to know you better.  Maybe you could --"

"Look let's get something straight -- this doesn't mean I like you or anything.  I just said I was
grateful, that's all.  Is that clear?"

"Crystal." Patrick says, and Chris leaves the room.

Chris approaches Jessie's hospital room just as Eve is leaving.  "I thought I told you to stay with her." Chris says.

"I just got paged.  She's awake." Eve says.

"She -- she's okay then?" Chris asks.

"Yeah -- she's resting right now.  I think she's hurting a bit more than she's letting on -- she's
putting up a pretty brave front." Eve tells him.  "She was asking for you."

"She actually wanted to see me?" Chris asks, surprised.

"Yeah, she did -- God knows why.  I think you need some time alone with her." Eve says.

"Hey Eve -- thanks for staying with her." Chris says. Eve smiles, and Chris enters her room.  "Hey." he says, approaching her bed.  "Welcome back."

"Hi." Jessie whispers.  "Eve said you were here all night."

"Well, I -- didn't want you to be alone." Chris says.  "How do you feel?"

"Like a building fell on me." Jessie replies, trying to sit up and wincing in pain.

"Easy -- let me help you." Chris says, helping her sit up.  "How bad is the pain?"

"It's not bad." Jessie says unconvincingly.

"Don't lie to me.  If you're hurting I want you to tell me."

"I've been better.  I'll be okay though.  I don't want any painkillers, I hate the way they make me feel."

"And I don't want you being a martyr, either." Chris tells her.

"Chris, really, it's not that bad." Jessie says.

"Okay.  But if it gets that bad you'll tell me, right?" Chris asks.  Jessie nods her head yes.  "Can I
get you anything?"

"I'm kind of hungry." Jessie says.  "I haven't eaten anything."

"I'll go down to the Recovery Room and get whatever you want -- how does that sound?" Chris asks.

"That sounds good." Jessie replies.  "Chris -- are you still mad at me?"

"Do I look mad?" Chris asks.

"You did before all of this happened."

"That's because I'm an idiot."

"Can I get that in writing?" Jessie teases.

"If that's what you want." Chris says.  "I'll even have it notarized -- 'Chris Ramsey is the world's
biggest fool for almost letting the best thing he's ever had slip away from him because of his pride'."
Jessie can't help but laugh a bit.

"I'm almost tempted to make you do it." Jessie says.

"Jess -- when I thought I might lose you, I --" Chris pauses for a moment.  "I'm not really good at this mushy, lovey-dovey stuff."

"Yeah, you pretty much suck at it."

"Thanks." Chris says, laughing.  "Jessie -- you are SO important to me.  Not a day goes by when I don't think about you -- even when I want to strangle you because you make me so damned furious.  But that's what I love about you, Jessie.  And I do love you, Jess.  Last night, I -- I realized that -- what business did I have judging you, because you didn't tell me about something that barely mattered to you.  Especially since I -- since I never even bother to tell you how much YOU matter to ME."  Chris says, taking her hand.  "I'm sorry, Jessie.  And I -- I just hope you can forgive me."  Jessie is quiet for a moment.

"Come here." she whispers.  Chris moves in closer, and Jessie kisses him gently on the lips.  "You're not the only one who's sorry, Chris.  I -- I should have told you about the money.  I just -- I wanted you to judge me for me, not for how much my net worth is.  I should have had more faith in you than that.  I'm sorry."  Jessie squeezes his hand.  "It's -- it's not too late for us, is it?"  Chris pauses for a moment.

"Can I tell you a secret?"

"Of course." Jessie tells him.

"I've always had this fantasy of making love on a bed covered with hundred-dollar bills -- any chance we could do that sometime?" Chris suggests.  Jessie starts to laugh, then winces as the laughter causes her chest to hurt.  Chris kisses her on the cheek.  "I'm sorry, honey."

"It's okay."  Jessie says, still laughing a bit.  "I'll see what I can do about that money thing."

"I can hardly wait." Chris says, grinning.

"Now, are you gonna go get me that dinner, I'm starving." Chris smiles.

"What do you want?" he asks.

"You know what I like." Jessie suggests.  Chris kisses her on the lips again.

"I most certainly do." he says.  He smiles happily as he leaves her room.

Patrick runs into Eve in the lobby.  "Hey, I was just on my way to see how Jessie is doing.  Any news?" Patrick asks.

"She's doing fine -- and I think you should wait awhile.  Chris is with her right now, and -- I have a
feeling they probably want to be alone." Eve tells him.

"You'll think he'll actually admit he was being a jerk?"

"Stranger things have happened."

"Yeah, well I'll believe it when I see it.  You know, just when I thought that maybe Chris and I might
possibly have a remote chance of getting along --"

"He makes some smart, smug comment that puts an end to that thought."

"How'd you know?" Patrick asks.

"Because I know Chris -- trust me, you're not gonna convince him overnight that you're on his side --whatever that may be.  I don't even think Chris is on Chris' side -- he really doesn't make it easy
for people to get to know him."

"No kidding."

"Why don't I try and work on him."

"Eve, you don't have to --"

"I want to.  He's your brother -- and Chris needs to stop being so damned pigheaded and realize that he should at least give you a chance.  I mean, what's not to like about you."

"A lot of things, Eve."

"Not from where I stand."  Eve says.

"Eve -- about last night.  When I -- I'm sorry if I seemed --"

"Patrick, you don't have to explain --"

"Yes I do.  That wasn't -- that wasn't like me.  I shouldn't have just kissed you like that.  I just --
just forget I said anything." Patrick says, rather awkwardly.

"It's okay -- I didn't mind." Eve says.  "Hey -- did you still need help with your apartment.  I have the afternoon off, and we were planning on --"

"You know -- I think I can handle everything on my own, actually.  But thanks anyway." Patrick says.

"Okay.  If you change your mind, you --"

"I know how to find you.  See you later." Patrick says, and he walks away.

"Yeah -- see you." Eve replies sadly.

May 31, 2001 -- early afternoon.  "Are your eyes still closed?" Chris asks, pushing Jessie in a wheelchair into a room at the hospital.

"Yes, they're closed.  When are you gonna tell me what's going on?" Jessie asks.

"Right now.  You can look." Chris says.  Jessie opens her eyes and looks around the room.

"Chris -- it's -- you didn't have to do this." Jessie says, glancing around the room -- it's the hospital
suite, decorated with flowers, a queen size bed, and a large-screen TV with a VCR hookup.

"Hey -- nothing is too good for my girl." Chris replies, reaching down and kissing her on the cheek.
"I figure you're gonna be stuck here for a couple more days, you might as well be comfortable."

"My other room was comfortable, Chris -- this is --"

"You don't like it?"

"I love it, but -- you're gonna spoil me."

"Well, get used to it." Chris says.  He helps Jessie get into bed.  "So -- I was thinking maybe I could
just go get us a couple of movies this evening --- no sense in letting such a nice setup go to waste.  What are you up for -- comedy, drama, action --"

"NO action -- I've already had my quota for quite awhile, thanks." Jessie tells him.  Chris laughs.

"Okay -- how about good romantic film then?"

"Sounds good to me." Jessie replies, just as Kevin enters the room.  Jessie looks up at him nervously.

"Hey -- how are you doing?" Kevin asks, moving closer to Jessie.  Jessie is quiet.  "It's Kevin, Jessie --I'm not Ryan."

"Prove it." Jessie says.  Kevin sits down on the edge of her bed.

"Remember when you were a little girl, and you and your parents moved away to San Francisco -- you cried and cried -- because you said you'd miss me and Victor and you didn't want to leave.  As much of an annoying pest as you were -- well, I kind of knew I'd miss you too.  So I got you this teddy bear, just before you left -- I told you that anytime you missed me, all you'd have to do was look at him, and everything would be okay.  You even named him Kevin, I think."  Jessie
smiles.

"I still have that bear." she says, tears forming in her eyes.  "Oh Kevin -- thank god you're okay."

"You too." Kevin says, hugging her.  "I'm sorry I haven't come by since you've been awake -- but with Lucy and everything else --"

"It's okay, I understand.  How is Lucy?" Jessie asks.

"She's doing okay.  That's what I came here to tell you -- Lucy and I are gonna go help Victor --"

"Kevin, I appreciate your concern, but Jessie needs her rest.  Don't worry, I'll take good care of her."  Chris says, interrupting.

"You haven't told her, have you?" Kevin asks, glaring at Chris.

"Told me what?" Jessie asks.

"It's nothing -- I'll explain it all later." Chris
insists.

"Nothing! You call my daughter being kidnaped nothing????" Kevin shouts.

"What!" Jessie says, shocked.  Kevin takes Jessie's hand.

"Ryan, he -- he has Dominique." Kevin says.

"Oh my god." Jessie replies.

"Victor is in Europe, following his trail.  Lucy and I are going to join him -- Daniel is staying with Mary."

"Oh Kevin." Jessie says.

"I don't know how he was able to get to Europe --there's no money missing from our accounts, and I don't think Cooper gave him enough to --"

"Oh god, this is all my fault!" Jessie says, starting
to cry.

"Jess -- come on baby, calm down, you shouldn't be getting this upset." Chris insists.

"Jessie, it's not your fault." Kevin says.

"Yes it is." Jessie tells him.  "Kevin, I -- I gave Ryan money.  I thought he was you and -- he told me
how badly he wanted to help find -- god, I'm such an idiot!  If I hadn't given Ryan that money he
wouldn't have been able to --"

"Hey -- you had no idea it was Ryan.  He fooled everyone, Jessie.  He even fooled Lucy -- don't you worry, we'll find her."  Kevin says.

"Look Collins, I don't want her getting this upset, she's already been through enough thanks to your
freaky family." Chris says angrily.

"Chris, leave him alone!" Jessie says.  "Kevin -- if you need anything, you just tell me.  I mean it -- and as soon as I get out of here, if you want me to come and help you --"

"Oh, like hell." Chris says.  "I want you staying as far away from that lunatic Chamberlain as possible."

"He's right." Kevin grudgingly admits.  "I don't want any more members of my family being put at risk -- you stay here, Victor and I will handle things."

"You -- you promise you'll let me know the minute you find out anything." Jessie says.

"You'll be the first one I call.  You take care of yourself, Jessie." Kevin says.  He gives her a gentle
hug and leaves the room.  Chris follows him.

"She wasn't ready to hear about that." Chris says angrily.

"I think she was.  She should have been told yesterday-- I thought maybe you'd have had the common decency to inform her when someone in her family is in trouble -- but then again, "common decency" isn't a part of your vocabulary, is it?" Kevin says in an angry tone. "All you care about is brownosing my cousin -- you see her and you automatically see dollar signs.  Jessie doesn't need a suite or any of this stuff while she's here -- she doesn't care about things like that.  If you really knew her, you'd realize that."

"Jessie wouldn't even BE here if it wasn't for you lunatic brother!" Chris shouts.  "I just want her to
be as comfortable as possible for right now.  And I didn't want anything to upset her and have an
effect on her recovery.  And for the record, I don't give a damn about how much money Jessie has!"

"You expect me to believe that?" Kevin asks.

"I don't care what you believe."

"I don't have time to have this conversation -- I need to go find my daughter.  But I promise you -- when I find my daughter, and my brother is safely locked away, I'm gonna make my number one priority getting YOU the hell away from my cousin!" Kevin says, and storms off.

Kevin and Lucy sit on a private plane.  Lucy glances out the window nervously.  "Are you sure you're feeling okay?" Kevin asks, taking her hand.

"I'm fine." Lucy replies.

"I still think you should have stayed at home for a few days."

"I am NOT going to sit around and wait while that monster is god knows where with my little girl, Doc!  I need to do something -- I have to find her."

"Victor says he has several promising leads -- Ryan can't hide forever, Lucy.  Sooner or later, he's gonna slip up."

"Did -- did you bring her little stuffed dog?"

"I have it in the suitcase for her." Kevin says.

"She loves that toy so much, and -- she's probably crying her little eyes out right now, because she
doesn't have it, and --"

"Lucy -- don't do this to yourself.  Dominique is alright -- and she'll back with us soon.  I promise."
Kevin says, pulling Lucy close.

"Now -- you understand, your job is as a housekeeper if anyone asks.  There is no child here." a disguised Ryan tells a young Italian girl.

"I understand sir." the girl replies.

"My ex-wife is very dangerous -- I took my little girl to protect her.  She can never know where we are."

"Of course --- I will be very discreet." the girl says.

"Good.  I'll be going out of town soon, for about a month -- you are to remain here at all times while I'm gone, is that understood?  I've arranged for everything you'll need -- you are to talk to no one."

"I understand."

"I think we'll get along just fine." Ryan says.  "You may go, for now -- be back first thing in the
morning."   The girl leaves.  Ryan takes Dominique in his arms.  "Daddy has to go out of town for awhile, sweetheart -- don't worry, I'll be back very soon. Our new little friend will take good care of you while I'm away.  And when I come back -- we'll never be apart again."

Chapter 22

June 2, 2001 -- Chris and Jessie enter Chris' apartment -- Chris has his arm carefully wrapped around Jessie as they walk in slowly. ''Come on baby, let's get you to the couch.'' Chris says.

''Chris, I'm perfectly capable of getting there on my own. I'm not made of glass, you know.'' Jessie says. Chris ignores her comment and helps her sit down.

''Why don't you just lie back and relax. I don't want you to overdo it.'' Chris says, insisting that she lie down. Jessie reluctantly complies. Chris goes into the bedroom, and comes back with a pillow and blanket, and carefully does his best to make Jessie more comfortable.

''Honey -- enough. It was sweet when I was in the hospital, but I'm home now. I'm fine, really.''

''I just want to take care of you, Jess.'' Chris says, sitting on the edge of the couch. Jessie touches his cheek softly.

''I know, and I love you for it, but there's a fine line between pampering and obsessing, and I think you've crossed it. I know you still feel guilty about the last couple of weeks, but you shouldn't be. I'm not mad at you, Chris -- but I will be really fast if you keep up this overprotective nonsense.''

''Okay then.'' Chris says. He gets up and sits down on the other couch. ''How about you get up and make us something to eat, I didn't have much for breakfast today.'' Jessie's jaw about drops. ''Well -- get moving woman, I'm hungry!'' Jessie picks up her pillow and flings it at Chris.

''That's not what I meant either!'' Jessie says, as Chris laughs. He gets up and goes back to Jessie's side, putting the pillow back behind her head.

''Nothing is ever simple with you, is it?'' he teases, and kisses her softly on the lips.

''This is.'' Jessie replies, wrapping her arms around him and pulling him into an intense, passionate kiss, just as Eve walks in from her room.

''Oh, get a room, you two!'' she comments. ''Other people live here, you know.''

''Thanks to my generosity, and don't forget that.'' Chris comments. ''By the way, your rent is a day late.'' Eve rolls her eyes, ignoring Chris' comment.

''Jessie, have you talked to Patrick?''

''Not since yesterday. Why?'' Jessie replies.

''I've been trying to get ahold of him the last couple of days, and -- he hasn't returned any of my phone calls.'' Eve says.

''Oh, come on, can't I go one day without hearing Reardon's name?'' Chris asks.

''Maybe I should go over to his place -- I think he's avoiding me.'' Eve says, again ignoring Chris.

''Yeah, well consider yourself lucky then.'' Chris remarks.

''Do you have to be such a jerk when it comes to Patrick? The guy saved your life, he helped you save Jessie's life -- what does he need to do to get you to say something -- ANYTHING -- nice about him?'' Eve asks, a bit disgusted with Chris' attitude. ''Your behavior toward Patrick has been nothing short of despicable, for NO reason whatsoever!''

''I just don't like the guy. Do you have a problem with that?'' Chris remarks.

''As a matter of fact, yes I do.'' Eve says. She walks to the other end of the room and grabs her jacket and purse. ''I have to go to work -- and I think I'll stop by Patrick's place afterward -- because unlike YOU, I happen to think he's a good guy.''

''Bye! And I want my rent tomorrow!'' Chris shouts, as Eve slams the door behind her. Jessie watches her leave, smiling.

''What are you smiling about?'' Chris asks.

''I knew she was attracted to him, but -- I didn't realize it was THIS bad.'' Jessie tells him.

''Eve and Reardon? Well, this just proves once again what lousy taste Eve has in the opposite sex.''

''Why, just because she didn't drool all over the place the first time she met YOU?''

''Hey -- I'm a damn good catch, any girl would be lucky to have me.'' Chris teases, sitting down on the edge of the couch with Jessie.

''Oh really? Well, ‘any girl' better keep her little hands to herself -- because you are all mine, and don't you EVER forget it.'' Jessie says, pulling him into a very intense kiss.

''Yes ma'am.'' Chris replies, kissing her back.

Kevin enters his hotel room. Lucy sits up on the bed as he walks in. ''Any news?'' she asks.

''Not yet -- Ryan's covered his tracks pretty well.'' Kevin says, sitting down on the bed with her.

''I want to go out and help you, Doc -- I'm getting tired of sitting around this stupid room watching these stupid TV shows I can't even follow because they're all in Italian, and --''

''Lucy -- we agreed that you would come with me so that we can bring our daughter home together. But you still need to rest -- your leg isn't even healed yet, and frankly, you'd slow us down.''

''I just want to find our little girl.'' Lucy says, in tears.

''I know.'' Kevin says, hugging her. ''Maybe in another day or two you'll be up to helping us.''

''Where's Victor?'' Lucy asks.

''He's following up on another lead -- I wanted to come back here and check up on you. Victor thought it might be a good idea for us to spend some time together -- maybe go out to dinner.''

''How can you even think about food right now? Doc, all I want to do is get out there and look for our baby. Do you think she misses us?''

''Lucy -- you have to believe that wherever Dominique is, she's safe, and she's being well taken care of.''

''She'll never be safe as long as she's with that monster!'' Lucy insists.

''Lucy -- let's just go get some dinner, okay? And then we'll think about what we need to do next.'' Kevin suggests.

''Well, I guess I am kind of hungry.''

''Good. I promise you -- I will not go back to Port Charles without our little girl. We'll find her, Lucy -- we'll find her.'' Kevin says, hugging Lucy again.

The doorbell rings at Patrick's apartment -- he goes to answer it. ''Hi. Can I come in?'' Eve asks.

''Sure, I guess.'' Patrick says, and Eve enters the apartment.

''I hadn't talked to you in a couple of days, so I thought I'd stop by and see how you were -- the place looks great.''

''Thanks --- sorry, I've been busy moving in and everything.''

''I know -- hey, I brought you something -- you know, to kind of brighten up the place.'' Eve hands him a gift bag.

''Eve, you didn't have to --''

''I wanted to, okay?''

''Thanks.'' Patrick says. He opens the gift back, and a somewhat sad-looking smile appears on his face. ''Candles.'' he says.

''You don't like them?'' Eve asks.

''No, they're nice, it's just -- Carrie loved these things. She had them in every room.''

''Oh. Patrick, I'm sorry, I didn't know --- if you don't want --''

''Hey -- they're nice. I love them.'' Patrick says. They go and sit down in the living room, and both of them are awkwardly silent for a few minutes. ''How's Jessie doing?'' Patrick finally asks.

''Better. She came home today -- she's staying with Chris for awhile.''

''That's good.''

''Patrick -- I think we need to talk about -- what happened the other day.''

''I told you Eve -- I'm sorry about that. I don't know what came over me, I never do things like that and --'' Patrick stops suddenly. ''I'm not ready for this, okay?'' he says after a few minutes. He gets up and walks toward the window, looking outside. Not knowing what to say, Eve looks around the room for a few minutes, glancing at a photo of a very attractive, red-haired woman on one of the end tables. Finally, she gets up, moving toward Patrick.

''That picture -- is that --''

''That's Carrie.'' Patrick says.

''She's pretty.'' Eve says. ''How did you meet her?'' Patrick turns around.

''In college. I was such a geek back then, I can't believe she even took the time to talk to me. I was studying in the lounge, and -- you don't want to hear this.''

''Sure I do.'' Eve says. She and Patrick sit down.

''Carrie saw what I was studying -- organic chemistry -- and figured I must be a science major. She was a theater major, taking a core class in biology, and having a hard time with it. She figured I might be able to help, so she just started asking me questions and -- we ended up really hitting it off. Somehow I managed to get enough nerve to ask her out, and --''

''You fell in love.''

''Yeah.'' Patrick says, remembering fondly. ''I'd never met anyone like her before. We were nothing alike, and yet we -- I'm sorry, it's just really hard for me to talk about her, even now.''

''Patrick -- Carrie sounds like she was a wonderful woman.''

''She was.''

''And she wouldn't want you to be all alone like this. Am I right?'' Patrick is quiet. He continues to look out the window.

''She -- she told me that -- she wanted me to be happy. And not to blame myself.''

''But you're not -- and you do. Patrick, you've been so nice to me, and you've really helped me when I needed someone. I'm just trying to return the favor. Can't you at least let me be your friend?'' Eve asks, walking up behind him and touching his shoulder. Patrick turns around.

''I -- I don't want to be your friend, Eve. That's the problem. I -- I love my wife. And I shouldn't be -- I shouldn't be thinking about you the way that I am.''

''Patrick -- something's telling you that maybe it's time to move forward with your life. You've already gotten this far -- come on, two months ago you were living in a shack in the middle of the woods, and now you're practicing medicine again, you have your own place -- maybe it's just the next natural step forward.'' Patrick is quiet. ''You shouldn't feel guilty -- you did nothing wrong.''

''It's hard, Eve. You just don't understand.''

''No, I guess I don't. But I want to -- if you'll let me.'' Eve takes his hand. ''I just don't want to see you going back to isolating yourself again. You deserve better than that.'' Patrick doesn't say a word. ''Hey -- you think this doesn't scare me? My history with men is nothing but disaster after disaster. I know I can't even begin to compare it to what you've been through, but -- Patrick, I had no intention of allowing myself to be even the slightest bit attracted to a man -- ANY man. It was the last thing on my mind. But then you showed up, and --''

''You stabbed me.'' Patrick says, trying to smile and lighten the mood a bit.

''Okay, that wasn't exactly the ideal first meeting -- I told you I've got a lousy track record.'' Patrick laughs. ''See, at least I got you to smile. Now come on -- I haven't had dinner yet, and I'm guessing you haven't either. And there's this new restaurant downtown I've been dying to try. My treat -- what do you say?''

''Eve, I have paperwork to catch up on and --''

''That can wait. By the way, have I mentioned that I'm used to getting my way? I am NOT taking no for an answer here. Now either you go out with me, or I actually attempt to cook for you -- and in all honesty, I highly recommend the former as the better choice.''

''Alright fine, you win -- but you are NOT dragging me out dancing this time.'' Patrick insists.

''Okay -- no dancing. Hey, how do you feel about karaoke?''

''You're joking, right?''

''Okay, that's a no -- how about we just go out and enjoy dinner and each other's company?''

''I think I can live with that -- come on, let's go.'' Patrick says, and they leave together.

June 10, 2001 -- Chris enters his apartment, and sees many of Jessie's things gathered together in the living room. ''What's going on here?'' Chris asks.

''I'm taking this stuff back home.'' Jessie says.

''You're leaving?'' Chris asks.

''Chris, I was only here temporarily -- just until I recovered fully. I'm back at work now, and I'm feeling fine. There's no need for me to stay.''

''Well, I -- kind of liked having you around.'' Chris says, wrapping his arms around her from behind.

''You know I'm not going anywhere -- but I have a home, and I miss it. You understand, don't you?''

''I guess.'' Chris says, with a sad look on his face. ''How about postponing this, just for a little while longer.''

''How much longer?''

''As long as it takes to finish this.'' Chris says. Chris grabs her and kisses her, leading her to the couch. They begin to undress one another, when suddenly the door opens and Eve walks in.

''Oh for cryin' out loud, can't you take that into the other room.'' Eve says, and Jessie and Chris scramble to put their shirts back on.

''I thought you had to work tonight. And last time I checked, I lived here.'' Chris snarkily replies.

''Yeah, well I live here too -- this is about the third time I've walked in on you two in the past couple of weeks. Don't you guys have anything better to do?''

''Aw, you're just jealous Eve, cause I'm no longer available.'' Chris says with a grin on his face.

''Yeah, right.'' Eve replies. ''Look, if you two want to do it like rabbits, that's your business. But take it to a more private venue, okay?''

''Excuse me, but the last time I checked the lease to this apartment was in *my* name, not yours. And as far as I'm concerned, Jessie and I can do it on the kitchen table if we want to -- that's none of your business.''

''Ewww! Thanks for that pleasant image.'' Eve says with a look of disgust on her face.

''Hey, will you two knock it off.'' Jessie says. ''Look, I have the perfect solution. Chris, why don't you just sign over your lease to Eve and move in with me.''

Chris laughs. ''You're kidding, right? Give up living in the lap of luxury to move into your place? No thanks.''

''What's wrong with my place?'' Jessie asks.

''Well, for one thing it screams retro. I just don't think I could live in a house where practically every piece of furniture was bought at a thrift shop.'' Chris says.

''Hey, all of my furniture is classic. And I searched long and hard for just the right pieces. And besides, retro is *a lot* better than rich yuppie snob in my book!'' Jessie replies.

''Oh, so my place is ‘rich yuppie snob' now, huh? Gee, I didn't realize it bothered you so much. And it's not just the your furniture -- you're always leaving dishes in the sink. And cups on the end tables. You do it here and you're even worse at your own place. It'd drive me nuts!''

''Yeah, well excuse me, Mr. Anal-retentive. You're not exactly a prize either. Eve, do you know that this guy takes over an hour to get ready for work or anywhere else that he's going? I've never seen a man so in love with his own reflection in my entire life!''

''Hey, it's hard to be humble when you're as great as I am, baby!'' Chris remarks.

''Yeah, well I've seen you first thing in the morning, pal, and trust me, you're not even close to being all that!'' Jessie says.

''Oh, would you two just shut up already!'' Eve shouts. ''I've never heard anyone argue as much as you do! If you guys lived together, you'd kill each other in less than a week. You know, I'm amazed that you've lasted this long without one of you causing the other bodily harm. I'm going to go and get a bite to eat -- try not to strangle each other while I'm gone.'' Eve leaves.

''What's her problem?'' Chris asks.

''I don't know -- I guess she just can't figure us out.'' Jessie replies, laughing.

''Yeah, well who can?'' Chris asks, smiling. ''You know, if I could move some of my stuff in, maybe living at your place wouldn't be such a bad idea after all. How do you think 'rich yuppie snob' would look with '70's retro thrift store'?'' he asks.

''Well, there's only one way to find out.'' Jessie replies, and she kisses him. ''You sure you want to do this? This is a pretty big step, Chris. Are you ready to take it?''

''Why don't I just show you how ready I am.'' Chris replies, kissing her as and he picks Jessie up and carries her off to the bedroom . . . . . .

June 13, 2001 -- Lucy is alone at a small shopping area in Italy, showing photos of Ryan and Dominique to everyone she sees. She walks into a store, and sees a woman leaving the store, carrying a little girl no more than a year old in her arms. ''Oh my God.'' Lucy says, racing out the door. She turns the corner -- the woman has vanished. Lucy races around the corner, but sees no one. She quickly finds a telephone, and makes a call. ''Victor, you have GOT to get down to this store right away -- I saw Dominique!''

Victor, Kevin, and Lucy are in the store manager's office, reviewing surveillance tapes of the cash register. ''Lucy, are you sure it was Dom?'' Kevin asks.

''You think I wouldn't know my own daughter? It was her, Doc -- I only saw her for a second, but -- that's her! That's the woman I saw!'' Lucy says, turning her attention to the video monitor, where she sees the woman, holding a baby.

''You can't see the baby's face.'' Victor says.

''It's her, Victor! That -- that woman, she -- what is she doing with my little girl?'' Lucy asks. ''Doc, we need to call the police.''

''Ryan must have hired her -- he kept talking about having plastic surgery. She was probably hired as a nanny while he's gone.'' Kevin says.

''Well, we need to find her, Doc -- we need to find her before Ryan gets back and --'' Lucy begins.

''Lucy, don't worry -- I'll see to it that this video is played on the local news -- surely someone will identify her.'' Victor says.

''He's right, Lucy -- don't worry. We should have our daughter with us again very soon.'' Kevin says.

June 15, 2001 -- Patrick and Eve walk into her apartment after an evening out. Patrick looks around the room. ''Don't tell me Chris is actually letting you keep his leather couches?'' Patrick asks. Eve laughs.

''Please -- he just hasn't gotten around to moving his furniture out yet. I wouldn't be surprised if he charges me a rental fee for using them since he's no longer living here.'' Eve says. ''So -- you gonna come in for awhile?''

''I don't know, Eve -- it's getting late, and I have to be at work early tomorrow, and --''

''Patrick -- it's okay, you don't need to explain. If you're not ready -- I understand.'' Patrick is quiet for a minute, then all of a sudden grabs Eve and kisses her intensely.

''I've been wanting to do that -- for awhile now.'' Patrick says. Eve pauses for a moment, then kisses him back. She takes his hand and leads him to the couch. They sit down, and Patrick kisses her once again. ''God, you're so beautiful.'' Patrick whispers. They kiss again, and after a few minutes Patrick starts to pull away. ''I really need to go.'' he says. Eve takes his hand.

''Patrick, you -- you don't have to.'' she says.

''Yeah I do.'' Patrick says, getting up. Eve follows him to the door. ''I had a great time tonight, Eve -- maybe we can -- go out again tomorrow?''

''Okay.'' Eve says, smiling. Patrick kisses her one last time.

''Goodnight.'' he whispers, then leaves. Eve leans up against the door, smiling happily.

The young girl paces nervously in the apartment, when the door opens and Ryan walks in, slamming the door behind him. ''Mr. Cummings -- I thought you were going to be --''

''I decided I didn't want to stay away from my little girl any longer.'' Ryan says. His face is bandaged on one side, where his scar was.

''What happened to your face?'' the girl asks.

''I had an accident -- it cut my trip short.'' Ryan lies. ''And I get back, only to find this in the airport!'' Ryan shouts, slamming down a newspaper with a photo of the girl from a store surveillance camera.

''I am so sorry'' the girl says.

''You were told NOT to leave!'' Ryan shouts.

''But it was such a nice day -- the baby was so fussy, and I thought maybe if we got out for a bit. I didn't see the harm in --''

''You didn't see the harm.'' Ryan says in a mocking tone. ''You women are all alike. You think you're so smart. You think you know better. Well, you're WRONG!'' Ryan shouts. Ryan lunges for the girl, and she lets out a scream just before Ryan puts his hands around her neck, choking her until the girl collapses to the ground. Dominique starts to cry from the other room. Ryan races back there, and picks her up. ''Shhh. It's okay, sweetheart. Daddy's back. We need to go away, sweetie. Somewhere they'll never find us. I'm sorry I had to go away for awhile -- it won't happen again, I promise. We'll never be apart again.''

''You're sure this is the girl?'' Kevin asks, walking with the building landlord toward the apartment, along with Lucy, Victor, and two local police officers.

''Yes, it is her. I've been out of town on business -- I just got back today, saw the girl's photo, and immediately called the police. I had no idea I was renting to a kidnapper.'' the landlord says. The policemen knock on the door, saying something in Italian. There is no reply. After a few minutes, they turn the doorknob -- it's unlocked. They open it, and find the girl lying on the floor in the middle of the room. Kevin immediately goes to her side, checks her pulse, and looks up.

''She's dead.'' he says. The police search the apartment -- it's empty. Lucy paces around the room, and finds a baby blanket draped over one of the chairs.

''Doc -- this is her blanket. This is the blanket Aunt Charlene made for her, and the one she had when she -- oh Doc, we're too late.'' Lucy says, and she breaks down and sobs in Kevin's arms.

''I'll make sure border patrol is notified -- he's NOT going to get out of the country, Lucy. We'll find him.'' Victor says.

Ryan replaces his bandage, and turns around and looks at Dominique, who is sitting in a playpen, happily playing with her new toy elephant. ''You like that, huh? I saw it and I just knew you'd love it. Wasn't it smart of daddy to have this place all set up for us? Now don't you worry, daddy's face is healing just fine -- as soon as we can, we'll get out of here, and we'll go somewhere safe, just you and I. Nobody will ever take you away from me.'' Ryan says.

June 17, 2001, afternoon. ''Are you sure you don't want me to come out there?'' Chris walks into the house in the middle of Jessie's telephone conversation. ''Uncle Victor, I could help. You sound like Chris. Well, I just hate sitting around here waiting when I could actually be DOING something. Fine. Call me tomorrow, okay. I love you too.'' Jessie hangs up the phone, and turns around to see Chris glaring at her.

''Did I just hear what I think I heard?'' Chris asks.

''Chris -- I didn't hear you come in.'' Jessie says.

''Obviously. And before you even ask -- there is no way in hell I'm going to let you go traipsing all over the world to chase after that psychopath! So just forget it!''

''I didn't realize I needed your permission to make decisions, Chris. Last time I checked, I had a mind of my own.''

''Last time *I* checked, just a little over three weeks ago I dragged you out of the rubble of a collapsed building, barely alive, thanks to the same maniac that you want to help track down! So forgive me if I seem a little paranoid to you, but I think I'm entitled.''

''Chris -- every lead Uncle Victor and Kevin get turns out to be a dead end -- Ryan is covering his tracks very well. And I can't help but feel it's partially my fault -- if I hadn't given him that money, he wouldn't have the resources to pull this off so well. I just want to help.''

''Jessie, there are plenty of ways you can help from Port Charles -- you can hire the best investigating team in the world with the kind of money you have. You don't need to get involved yourself.''

''This is about family Chris -- I wouldn't expect you to understand.''

''What's that supposed to mean?'' Chris asks.

''Nothing.'' Jessie replies.

''Hey -- you think my family isn't important to me? I'd give anything to find my little sister again. But it's been too long, it'd be impossible. And Abby cut me off, not by MY choice, that was hers. And you know I talk to Keith at least once a week -- I even told him I'd help him find a job when he makes parole.''

''What about the family you have right here in town.''

''You mean Reardon? Please.'' Chris remarks, making himself a martini.

''He wants to get to know his brother.''

''Reardon is NOT my brother!''

''You know, he's willing to take a DNA test if you still don't believe that --''

''I don't give a damn what a DNA test would have to say -- we might be related by blood, but there no way I will EVER consider Reardon family. Not after the way he abandoned us.''

''What are you talking about?'' Jessie asks.

''Look -- Patrick could have helped us, when he came looking for Henry, and he didn't -- he didn't even give a damn. So why should I?''

''I know he's sorry, Chris -- give him a chance.''

''He had his chance years ago -- and he blew it.'' Chris says adamantly.

''You know, it's a good thing most people don't make others live up to the standards you seem to expect -- if they did, you'd be lucky to find a job in fast food in this town. Think about that next time you decide to go off on another one of your tirades against Patrick.'' Jessie says, storming off into the other room.

June 18, 2001 -- Jessie is behind the ER desk, and Eve approaches. ''Jessie, can you get an IV started for me in cubicle three -- I have some x-rays I need to check.'' Eve asks. Jessie doesn't say a word. ''Hello -- earth to Jessie!'' Eve says louder. Jessie looks up.

''I'm sorry, did you say something?'' Jessie asks.

''Jess -- are you okay?'' Eve asks. Jessie sighs.

''Kevin and Lucy thought they found Dominique -- but it was too late. Ryan outsmarted them. And now they have to start all over again. And I just feel so -- I don't know, useless. I want to help them somehow. I know Europe pretty well, Eve, a friend and I backpacked there for a whole year when I was eighteen. But if I go, Chris will --''

''Have a fit.'' Eve says.

''It's not fair, Eve. Chris is making me choose between him and my family. Why can't he just understand that this is important to me?''

''Jessie, he doesn't want to see you get hurt again.''

''I know.'' Jessie says. ''But I'd be really careful -- Kevin has always been there for me whenever I needed him. I just want to return the favor. He and Uncle Victor -- they're the only family I have. I just don't know what to do.''

''Jessie -- Chris has every right to be worried. You know how dangerous Ryan is.''

''I know, I just -- you know, just forget it. I'll have to handle this on my own. Now, did you want me to do something?''

''Yeah -- start an IV in cubicle three.'' Eve says.

''Sure, no problem.'' Jessie says. ''By the way -- how are things with Patrick?''

''I don't know.'' Eve says. ''I mean, I love spending time with him. And he's really sweet. And handsome, and smart.''

''So what's the problem?'' Jessie asks.

''Every time we -- we haven't -- I mean, we haven't been going out THAT long, but -- he hasn't even made any kind of move to --''

''Eve -- Patrick is kind of shy. Maybe you need to make the first move.'' Jessie suggests.

''I don't know -- Jessie, he loved his wife so much. And I just don't want to have him think I'm pressuring him into anything that he's not ready for.''

''Well, I don't know what to tell you then. But if I had waited for Chris to make the first move, I'd still be waiting. Maybe it's a genetic thing.'' Eve laughs.

''Yeah, maybe. You know, I wish those two would try and get along.''

''Unfortunately, that would require Chris admitting that he was wrong about something. So I don't see it happening anytime soon.'' Jessie says. ''I'll get that IV started -- just be patient with Patrick, Eve. When the time is right, you'll know.'' Jessie leaves. Eve sighs, not quite convinced.

''Yes, that's a reservation for two, the name is Dr. Chris Ramsey. That sounds good. Thanks.'' Chris hangs up the phone, as Patrick steps out of the shower room.

''Taking Jessie out tonight?'' Patrick asks, walking over to his locker.

''Do you always listen in on private conversations?'' Chris asks.

''I didn't realize that making dinner reservations was private.'' Patrick remarks. Chris tries to ignore him. ''You know -- maybe some night, Eve and I could --''

''I don't think so.'' Chris says, not allowing Patrick to finish his sentence. ''The less time I have to spend around you, the better, as far as I'm concerned.''

''Look -- is it so wrong of me to want to get to know my brother?'' Patrick asks.

''I'm not your brother.'' Chris says.

''I told you -- I'm willing to do a DNA test.'' Patrick says.

''And I told you that's not necessary. Do I believe we're related by blood. Yeah, I believe it -- look at us, I'd be an idiot not to. I've accepted the fact that I'm stuck working with you whether I like it or not. I've accepted the fact that everyone around this hospital thinks you're the second coming of Louis Pasteur. I've even accepted the fact that my best friend is dating you, and that my girlfriend practically worships the ground you walk on. But as for us being brother -- no DNA test will ever change the fact that I honestly don't give a damn about you one way or another -- so why don't you and your little Mr. Goody Two Shoes attitude just stay the hell out of my business and my life once and for all.'' Chris leaves the room in a huff.

June 19, 2001 --- ''Are you sure you're on the right track?'' Jessie asks.
''At this point, I don't know anymore. But it's all we've got.'' Kevin replies. ''Lucy and I don't intend to leave here without Dominique. And Lucy misses Daniel so much. I think she wishes she'd have brought him with us.''

''I know, it must be hard for her.'' Jessie says. ''I just wish there was something I could -- that's it! I have the perfect idea. I have to go, Kevin -- I'll talk to you soon!'' Jessie hangs up the phone.

''Jessie, what are you -- hello?'' Kevin says, to no one. Kevin hangs up the phone and sighs.

''Who was that?'' Lucy asks, coming out of the other room.

''It wasn't a lead, Lucy. But I have a feeling we're going to have more help soon -- whether we like it or not.'' Kevin tells her.

''Are you sure Kevin is okay with this?'' Mary asks Jessie.

''He will be once I get there. Mary, Lucy misses this little guy so much.'' Jessie says, holding Daniel in her arms. ''It's the perfect solution -- Lucy can stay in the hotel with her little boy, and I can help Kevin and Victor look for Dominique. I know Europe so well, and -- I just hate sitting around here doing nothing.''

''What did Chris say?'' Mary asks.

''I -- I haven't told him.'' Mary looks at her disapprovingly. ''He'd try and stop me from going. He just doesn't understand. I left him a note -- I'll call him as soon as I get there, and hopefully he won't be too angry with me. I have to do this -- they're my family.''

''What about work?''

''I already cleared it with Bobbie, and I told her I'll work overtime once I get back. Plus, she just hired a couple of new nurses who would love the extra hours right now. It's not a problem.''

''Well, you just take care of my grandson.'' Mary says.

''Oh, don't worry -- we'll have a really good time on the trip over there, won't we Danny?'' Jessie says, doting on the little boy. ''Say bye to Grandma -- we're on our way to see Mommy and Daddy, and we're gonna find your little sister.'' Jessie leaves with the little boy.

Patrick walks Eve to her apartment door, and kisses her in the hallway. ''I had a really nice time tonight, Eve.'' he says.

''Me too.'' Eve says.

''I better be going.''

''Patrick -- I was hoping you'd come in.'' Eve says. Patrick reluctantly goes into the apartment with Eve. Eve leads him over to the couch, and kisses him intensely once they sit down. Patrick pulls away.

''Eve -- I can't do this.'' he says.

''Patrick, I -- I don't want to push you or anything. But I just -- you haven't -- Patrick, if you're not attracted to me, I --''

''Is that what you think?'' Patrick asks, surprised. ''Eve -- you're beautiful. It's just that --''

''Patrick, I just want you to tell me what's wrong. If you're not ready -- I understand. I just need you to tell me.''

''I -- Eve, I'm sure you've -- you've probably had a few other boyfriends before. But -- I was kind of shy, when I was a teenager. The girls didn't pay much attention to me. I met Carrie my sophomore year in college, and she was my -- I mean, Carrie is the only one I've ever --''

''Oh.'' Eve says, suddenly feeling very uncomfortable.

''I'm just -- I just think that -- it's not something we should jump into. Carrie and I dated for over six months before we -- I hope I don't sound like a prude or anything, but -- I just think it's wrong to do that so soon. I hope you understand.''

''Yeah -- of course I do.'' Eve says. ''If you want to wait -- we can wait.''

''I knew you'd understand.'' Patrick says, and he kisses her. ''I'm sorry I haven't said anything sooner -- and I promise, I won't keep anything from you again, okay?''

''Okay.'' Eve says, fighting back tears.

''I'll see you at work tomorrow.'' Patrick says, kissing her once more. ''Goodnight.'' he says, and leaves. Eve starts to cry, and gets up and goes into her bedroom. She looks in the mirror, sobbing.

''He'll never love you.'' Eve says to her reflection. ''How could someone like that ever love someone who used to be a whore!''

''Jessie -- I'm home!'' Chris shouts, entering the house, but there is no answer. ''Okay, I get it -- you're gonna make me hunt you down, huh? Well that's just fine with me.'' Chris says, making his way into the bedroom. He starts to take off his shirt as he walks in the bedroom door. ''You better be ready, because I am --'' Chris stops and looks around the empty room, and notices and envelope with his name on it lying on the bed. Chris sits down on the edge of the bed, opens the envelope, and begins reading . . . .

Dear Chris,

I went to Europe to help Kevin and Uncle Victor look for Dominique. I knew you'd be mad at me and try and stop me from going, so that's why I had to do things this way. Lucy misses Daniel -- so I took him with me, so that he can be with his parents. Besides, I know I can help. I know you just want to keep me safe, but I just can't sit around and wait when my family needs me. Please, please don't be too angry with me. I promise, I'll be careful, and I'll be home as soon as I can. I'll call you once I arrive in Europe. I'm sorry Chris, but I had to do this -- I just hope you can try and understand, and that when I come home you'll be able to forgive me. I love you very much, Chris, and I'll be thinking about you every moment that I'm away. You are my heart, always and forever -- don't ever forget that.

Jessie

Chris sets the note down on the night stand, and continues to sit on the edge of the bed, clearly distraught. After a couple of minutes, he picks up the note, crumples it up, and flings it across the room in anger.
